Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I think what makes us most upset is how he makes us feel like we are not important. How can you say stay off the roads, only use them if you have to but then say that schools are open? Many kids go on the bus. Special ed students are getting bussed from several towns away. Many teachers do not live nearby and come in from all over long island.
I do not think this snow storm necessarily warranted a day off (although it seems out east did get hit harder), but dont tell us to stay off the roads but keep school open!

I know this has been said before on most of these threads, but this is not a Bloomberg thing, it is not his master plan to force teachers to commute in. NYC schools are rarely if ever cancelled. Ask anyone who grew up in the city, recently or even our parents ages, several of whom have already posted the same thing, they rarely close. Does it make it more difficult for teachers that live outside of the city? Yes, but this is not news and not Bloomberg, it's the city, that's it.
Very true.
And it's not just schools. All city agencies and government offices are open as well. It's annoying but it is what it is.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
look, the snow just wasn't bad enough to warrant closing the schools. Most businesses are open, the rest of the city services are open, and therefore so are the schools
You have to realize that it's not Bloombergs agenda to put people in danger .. he's not 'out to get teachers' or doesn't care about the kids. That's just not true. NYC has always had a policy of rarely closing the schools. It's determined by a number of factors (including the winds, amount of snow fallen and still to come, and how the roads are being cleared)
People should do what they feel comfortable with as far as if they want to send their kid to school or not, or go into to work if you're a teacher. If you don't think it's safe, then don't go out.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
ok so I am not a teacher in the city but i am employed by a company that does not close for anything - ever.
i understand why everyone is so heated, especially if you live on long island, suffolk in particular but its NOT that bad in the city... yes, a snow emergency was declared last night BEFORE the storm hit. they predicted way more snow in the city than the city actually got.
if the streets are clear and the kids/buses can get there, how can they close?
my office is open today. i could have gotten there (a 45 minute commute on a good day - Massapequa to Oceanside) and I was forced to take a day since my son's daycare is closed.
the LIRR is running. roads are clear (at least Nassau going West)...
not looking for drama here but the reality is, the storm was NOT that bad for most of Nassau and the City.

I agree with this..
IMO, I thought my commute in today was probably the best I've had in a very long time! got here quicker than I usually do and there was NO traffic and the subway was running beautifully.

easily - the storm was not nearly as bad a predicted for the city. snow emergency was declared last night as a preventative measure. and then, minimal snow. why would he close schools? if you are a teacher in the city but from suffolk where the snow is BAD, dont go in. i dont think they are looking for people to be heros. this is why people have sick/personal days.

People come from all over to teach in nyc. Yes people work and there places of employment arent closed, but they are not responsible for 30+ children. If they make it in late it isnt probably a big deal. If you are a teacher you cant just say ill get there when i get there bc there needs to be adults, certified teachers (not just aides) to watch them til you get there.
It isnt that easy in the city to just say call in sick. All these teachers calling in bc they live in suffolk or some where that got a lot of snow means less teachers working to watch those kids. There are not enough subs! This means kids are split up so that other teachers have to watch them. Now one teacher is responsible for 35-40 kids. And where i work believe me 98% of studnts show up!

I went to NYC schools and I work in them now.
I know they never/rarely close. Does not mean it is safe or a good decision.
While I agree with you that it may not always be the safest for those coming in, I just think, regardless of anyone's feelings about Bloomberg, it should not be painted as "his" doing. What's "his" point, and what is "he" trying to prove, and what is "he" thinking, etc. This is/was/pretty much always has been the way the city has run for years and years and years, long before Bloomberg was ever in the picture...it's nothing new and not "his" idea. That's all I'm saying. I hope everyone has a safe commute in to whatever town they're going to and whatever job they're going to do.
ITA. Growing up and attending NYC public schools, I had 2 snow days between Kindergarten and Senior year of High School. Its nothing new that NYC public schools rarely close. It sucks, but its the way it is.

This is true. I live in Brooklyn, I heard the plows at 5am, brought my kids to day care and the streets were relatively clear. Even the houses that hadn't shoveled ( ) weren't impossible for me to pass with my double stroller because the snow is soft and melting..
I know it sucks if you have to travel from Nassau or Suffok to get to the city, but the city is up and running today, people have to go to work and lots of kids have to go to school because of that.
And not that this means anything, but the NYC schools did not close a single time during my 12 years of public education... Koch, Dinkins, Guiliani.
Notwithstanding, I think Bloomberg is an a$$hole anyway.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
NYC is not THAT bad. From what I hear the burbs got it much much worse. I understand that it is frustrating for those teachers who commute from the burbs, but teachers are not the only ones who have to do it. You also have to understand that if schools are closed, many parents who DO have to go to work will be screwed because they'll have to find childcare for their children. There are many parents who HAVE to get to work, they depend on that paycheck and having school closed would cause a big issue for them.

I am not a NYC teacher, but I teach on LI. I am appalled at this. I think a HUGE problem is that I have never seen anything really publicized about this. It needs to be all over the news that Bloomberg is being hypocritical declaring a snow emergency yet allowing teachers and students to risk their lives to come in. Something needs to be done to showcase the craziness of this situation!!!

I know I am new to the board and am probably going to get slammed for this, but I could not agree more. Everyone else has jobs that they are required to go to, why should teachers not be required to go in. If Bloomberg wants all cars off the road, maybe it's because it will be easier for plows to clear the roads and the buses can get through. I am not looking for drama, it just seems that people use excuses like long commutes or children getting to school to cover the real reason of just not wanting to go to work. DW didn't want to go to work and was planning on working from home, but she saw that it wasn't that bad and we shoveled out and she went to work. It really isn't that bad out.

I just want to clarify - he declared a 'weather emergency' which is different than a 'snow emergency'. Or at least that's my understanding. The weather emergency basically urged people to stay off the roads (same thing they say at all the press conferences). I think in a snow emergency, people are told they HAVE to stay off the roads and/or a lot of cars have to be moved off the streets. Only cars that should be out are plows and emergency vehicles.
Either way. It stinks for the people who live in areas that got hit harder than others.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
I think there are a few factors here that make it all debatable:
1. different areas got different amounts of snow 2. there was way too much hype about the storm, i'm upset that my DDs were bouncing off the wall when i picked them up yesterday, their own teachers were talking about how they were so excited for a snow day (IMO they should not say anything to the kids) and it was put into all of our heads that we would be getting one! 3. we live in NY and should be equipped to clean up the streets for everyone to get to work/school, for up at a foot of snow!

Exactly. I don't know why it's surprising that a school system that is notorious for never closing is open.
The weather (not snow) emergency was called before it even started snowing in order to give the city the power to suspend parking & garbage removal so they can clear roads more efficiently. That's what happened - the main/major roads are cleared, I saw some side streets that were cleared and others were entirely passable.

Re: NYC Schools OPEN!
One problem with keeping the schools open, and this applies to past administrations, not just Bloomberg, is that they only look at things in the urban areas, and not Staten Island and parts of Queens. My sister lives and works on SI, and I grew up there. Whereas Times Square might be clean, the residential streets on SI were not all easily passable this morning. You cannot rely on public transportation to get across SI, as it is much more limited than other parts of NYC, and this is never taken into consideration when making school closing decisions.

This is true, and this is part of the problem of having such a large school system. What works for one area of NYC is NOT necessarily appropriate for another party, but the decision applies to everyone. No mayor is ever going to make everyone happy, but it would be nice if he considered areas other than Manhattan once in awhile.

There were plenty of days that my mom kept me home from school, but school was OPEN!!!!!!!!!
As I wrote in one of the other threads:
Not to get all political, but I always believed that part of the reason they kept the city schools open was so that the children who receive free lunch have access to it. Also, so that any parents who needed to go to work were not leaving their children unattended if a sitter wasn't available.

THANK YOU!!!
this is getting ridiculous. so sad you need to take a day out of your bank. but there are kids and parents that rely on the schools for MEALS. for "day care". for everything.
even if 50% of teachers commute from a far distance, 100% of your students live in the city. and a large portion of the city is totally fine. roads are good. sure there are certain sections that got more snow, but then use your common sense (and annual leave) and stay home.
but don't be mad b/c you have to use a sick day.

I I am not looking for drama, it just seems that people use excuses like long commutes or children getting to school to cover the real reason of just not wanting to go to work. DW didn't want to go to work and was planning on working from home, but she saw that it wasn't that bad and we shoveled out and she went to work. It really isn't that bad out.
In Centereach there is a over a foot and a half of snow and the daycare center my children go to as well as all the districts surrounding my house are closed. Those are the "real" reasons I was not able to go to work today. My commute on a good day is 5 hours there and back. I'm sorry but I am not using my long commute as an excuse to not go to work to teach an empty classroom.
This morning my DH left when I was supposed to leave at 5:30am. He said that there were 3 cars blocking the ramp to get on to Nicholls road because they were stuck. Sounds pretty bad out to me.
