pubic breastfeeder here...usually uncovered..he did not want anything on his head.
once I started nursing, breasts were completely out of marital equation. not by me, by dh.
dh had a very hard time with me nursing in public. I am bad, once milk comes out of them, I don't see them as very private at all. Yesterday morning whle in the shower, I called my sister in to hold one because it was just unbelieveable how big and heavy they have gotten.
If i see a public bf'er, i always want to offer her a bottle of water.

I don't think the issue people have is with the nudity, to be frank. I think the people who have an issue with it don't want to see a baby sucking on something they consider sexual.
That is why those same people don't bat an eye at the women in with their boobs hanging out skimpy bikinis but are horrified at a flash of skin when putting the baby on the breast to eat. They cannot fathom that the same part of the body can be used for these two completely different things.
Exactly. There's no problem if you're in a bikini and people are staring, but have a baby on there and suddenly its dirty.
When I'm nursing you cannot tell at all. I've had people walk up to see that baby WHILE I was nursing!
My feeling is, I have other kids. I can't possibly go to a bathroom(and I never would) and bring all of them with me. She doesn't like the cover, won't take bottles. I'm not making thing inconvenient for myself or staying hidden forever because some people get offended over me nursing in public. Look away, walk away, whatever you have to do. I don't expect other people to alter themselves because of my hang ups, so you shouldn't expect me to either.

i did it.. how could you not? if the baby has to eat he has to eat!  i'm not overly concerned with what people think anyway.. but as to not embaress my other children i would wear one of those over the shoulder wraps to cover up.

This is one of those topics where my opinion changed once I actually experienced it.
I was a firm believer in "cover it up" or go somewhere private until my second was born. Eliza was a mover and a shaker from the get-go, so that coupled with a toddler who wasn't going to go to "somewhere private" meant I was either going to have to suck it up and do it uncovered (meaning: no nursing cover) or stay cooped up in the house (which might have killed us all).
I no longer give a rat's patooty what others think. I have the law on my side and if my child needs to eat, then so be it. I tried to be as discrete as possible, and usually was successful.
I did have one guy seem too interested once at the play area at the mall. I told him if he was hungry he could have the other one. He apologized and turned 6 shades of red.

Prego crashing here...I have always been fine with seeing it except for this one time...
I was walking down Lex Ave in NYC and this woman had her baby in one of those slings BFing...but the woman was talking on her cell phone and walking while her baby was sucking away....her full N!P was exposed...it was just such a site I couldn't help my reaction I gasped and I think I said EW out loud....it was just gross. I think I was more grossed out that she was not paying any attention to her baby who was feeding...it was just quite the site.

It's not like I have my ta-ta's hanging out...I'm descrete when i do it and you don't see a thing, even when I don't use a cover up.
I honestly could care less what people think when I'm out in public.
However...when I am at a friends house, where it might be a party, or a dinner party etc...I will excuse myself to a quite room alone.
When I have been to GTG's with other mommies I will ask what the protocol is and if anyone minds if I am right there when I do.

Were you at all uncomfortable doing it around your own father, or your DH's male friends and family? I think that would be more uncomfortable than it is doing it in front of strangers. Not because friends/family are against BF but simply because they feel awkward potentially catching a glimpse of the breast of their friend or family member's wife. Has anyone had issues with this?
DH's Dad was uncomfortable at first, but he just left the room...he never asked me to leave. Recently at DS's baptism our families were gathered around the table in the restaurant & I fed DS. I had a cover on, but to me I'm feeding my child. It wasn't an awkward situation at all.

Just because you are nursing yur baby doesn't mean you need to be stareing at them. For the short while the I nursed, I would nurse and do other things...
i.e.... talk on the phone, watch TV, play on the computer.
I don't see anything wrong with it. Her child needed to eat while she was out walking on the street, why shouldn't she if she was comfortable nurse? Should she have turned around and gone home so she could pay attention to her baby?
My SIL has 3 kids, 1 still nurses. More often than not, she is nursing the baby while sitting on the floor playing with the two older ones.

I don't have a problem with it. Granted I haven't done it yet but I have no problem seeing other women do it. I'm with you though - I wish it was more openly accepted.

I have no issue with it but I'm spastic and can't coordinate enough to nurse in public without making a scene
With Ryan I used to hide in a backroom when we had company over. With Colin I'm managing to nurse with my cover around family and friends. I wish I could do it more gracefully.

im not uncomf around my dad but he SO he. i did it the other day in front of dhs friend bc his wife BFed and i felt he could handle it. i was discrete tho. all other males like FIL and BILS, i wear a cover

I think as long as the woman is covered, its perfectly fine with me. I think its a beauty and natural thing. I mind the women in the mall (i kid you not) who do it uncovered so anyone and everyone walking by can see her boob. She was asked to cover up by the security guard b/c they were getting complaints.
i hope she sued their azzes off bc that is illegal. too f*cking bad if people complain.

I have been BFing my DD for about a year now, and thus far, I have not BFed her in public very much, which meant that we have been home ALOT. Looking back, I wish I did feel less modest about it bc we have missed out on alot of experiences bc of her feeding schedule. For my next DC, I will definitely bf in public more frequently!

I have BF everywhere! At the food court at the mall, the beach, you name it, I was there. However, I always used a cover and I was discreet. I can understand how others would feel uncomfortable, therefore I used a cover. With DD I plan on BFing again wherever she needs. I think my nursing cover was the best money I ever spent!

I think woman should BF their babies wherever and whenever they want. I don't eat my meals in the bathroom why should a baby have to? I mean they are only boobs and when a Mom is BF you can't even see anything.
ITA. I often nursed DD1 in public. At first, I tried to use bathroom, find private rooms, etc. It was so difficult, and my daughters well-being and happiness was more important. when she was hungry, she was really hungry. and if i had to go some place private every time, there just wouldn't have been time...she nursed for long stretches.

IMO it is something to be done privately. I would never BF in public, but that is my own choice. When I was BF I would not do it in front of company, family or friends. I think it puts people in an awkward psotion which then makes me feel awkward. Plus I was a big mess when I was BFing and my ta-tas definietly would have been hanging out!
I never really got the hang of it

I have a question - what do people consider "covering up?" I've tried to use a burp cloth, but DS always pulls it off. But I like to think I'm pretty discreet even though there's not a piece of fabric over his head (which, actually, IMO, SCREAMS BFing woman!) So is a cover actually needed, or you all just don't want to see my nipple?
