Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
Examples:
Kristopher vs Christopher
Gavan vs Gavin
I personally don't think it's in the child's best interest. "Gavan" will most likely go through life correcting people on the spelling of his name. What's wrong with Gavin? Different doesn't always mean better.
I have a family member who just did this and while I would never in a millon years say 1 word to them I was just curious if I'm in the minority.
yes, I know to each is own..but it's their kids life not theirs. why make it harder for them?

Re: Spelling a child's name different then the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
generally it always looks "off" to me. like a misspelled word. I know it's the person's perogative but it does throw me.
although, I am sure a french person would say the same about the way I spell my son's name.
edited for my misspelled word. which did, in fact, throw me.
and further to say, there are exceptions b/c some names are spelled differently in different languages...like the russian spelling of alexander. that doesn't bother me. it's when they are spelled differently JUST to be different...eh.

Well we spell Bella's name iZabella instead of iSabella, so I'm all for spelling things a little different

Like Ella Wynter I think it depends on the name.

I like when names are changed up a little. I guess because i did it with DD's name. Instead of Olivia we named her Alivia. There are so many common names out there i think its good to make it a little different. JMO

To each his/her own. As long as you don't mind your kid having to correct everyone for the rest of his life, go for it.
I prefer the plain easy route.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
we spell Braedan that way instead of brayden - my DH liked it that way - but pretty much any way you spell that name you have to spell it out for them -he will always have to spell his last name anyway - it is a common last name that is spelled differently

I agree. From a teachers POV I go crazy because I always misspell them! But I am use to it working in queens, I always have very ethnic named students
I had a Mathieu (matthew) I think it is french but he wasnt

I've seen Izabella spelled that way before. I can see you spelling it that way b/c the name became so popular. That's similar to sophia and sofia. I know how Izabella is pronounced; putting the Z there doesn't throw the name off. Gavan can be pronounced different ways.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I LOVE different spellings and I don't think it affects the kids. Even common spellings of names get spelled wrong all the time. My name is Kristen and I can't tell you how many times throughout my life people would spell my name Christian or Kristin or Kristan. I don't think it's a big deal to use an uncommon spelling, I think in some cases it's actually prettier or nicer looking than the more common spelling. I wouldn't say one way is better than the other though.........it's just preference.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
this was a concern of mine when we decided on Erik rather than Eric.
Its not such a "different" spelling, but its not the most common way. So I always have to specify "Erik with a K" and people often get it wrong but I anticipated that when we picked the name.
I'm not a fan of made up spellings just to be different.

Hales is Haley not Hailey so I know many people will spell it wrong throughout her life. She's not even a year and people have been spelling it wrong all along.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I dont have feelings on it one way or the other. I dont think its going to harm the child....could it be a PITA, sure, but its not going to be detrimental to them. Although, its not something I would personally do.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
The names that everyone is naming actually have multiple spellings. I'm not talking about those names. I know a few Alivia's. I've seens Braydon spelled all different ways and Kiera go both ways. I always thought Gavin was spelled Gavin.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I wouldn't worry about it based on spelling problems, my name is Jeannine and I have always had to tell people how to spell my name.
One of the names we are thinking about for the new baby is Caitlin. I love the traditional Gaelic spelling, but I like Kate spelled better with a "k" so I am struggling with how I want to spell it.
DSs name is Wilson and if he ends up going by Wil, I would spell it with one "l" because there is only one "l" in Wilson.
I don't have an issue with it

That's so funny because my aunt had the opposite problem with my cousin of the same name. He is "Eric" and people always would spell it "Erik" which we always thought was more common.

I agree, why make life hard on the child
In a perfect world children would be able to easily change their name to watchever they want when they turn 18. Some kids out there are stuck with some awful names.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
everyone spells Luce's name wrong.
he was given a little handmade chair last christmas...all the new babies were..with their names painted on it.
his was spelled wrong.
I didn't say anything b/c I felt badly but my aunt saw the spelling on the birth announcement (after she made the chair) and demanded I return it for her to fix.
then there is the issue of never having those little license plates with your name on it.

Ok that's what I mean. all the examples and all your kids spelling are not made up. Hailey/Haley is known to have muliple spellings as well.
I personally think Gavan is made up. I hope no one takes offense to this. It was not my intention and no it's not the worst thing in the world to have a unique speeling of their name. My kids names are all unique and they will probably always have to spell their names out b/c they are different.
