then there is the issue of never having those little license plates with your name on it.
The only time I ever found anything with my name on it was when we went to Montreal - I was ecstatic when I saw it!
It was a bummer, but most of those personalized things have an address in the package where you can send the item back and they will send you one with your name on it. I just had to learn patience as a kid

I love a little uniqueness to the name.
Wish I had one so but I figured Jude was unique enough as is the fact we all call her AJ

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
There are many names that have several spellings on record like Hailey, Hayley, Haley or Aiden/Aidan that I have no problem with. I know Sienna can be spelled Siena and she will probably have to spell her name out to everyone to make sure they put the two N's in there, and that was fine us.
But names that have a "yooneek" spelling I guess I don't really get the reason for it... for ex: instead of Jessica, it's spelled Jesikkah.

I personally know a little boy name Kae'lb. Come on now! Really????? How did Caleb go to Kae'lb?
It seems to be a trend today to add an ' or a y to a perfectly good name. People want to be different I guess... my friend is a nurse and you wouldn't believe the baby names and spellings of names she's told me in the last year!

yes..this is what I mean as well. Perhaps Kristopher wasn't the best example, even though it's very uncommon, I was not talking about the names that are known to have multiple spellings including Jaxon. Gavan imo is made up and yes...the bottom line is to each his/her own.

To each his/her own. As long as you don't mind your kid having to correct everyone for the rest of his life, go for it.
I prefer the plain easy route.
I agree.

I'm not a fan...
People have always spelled my name wrong - Rebecca - and not even by using an alternate spelling like Rebekah ... just wrong - Rebbeca... it irritates me still.
So I wouldn't deliberately give my child a unique spelling because that would only make it worse.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
depends... take the name Lila (i believe that's the common spelling)
If you spell it Lyla, people are likely to pronounce it LYE-la
but if you spell it Lila, she'll deal with correcting people that pronounce it LEE-la.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
Personally, I'm not a fan. People always misspell my DD's name (Lily -- lots of people put 2 Ls in the middle) It annoys me alot. It never occurred to me that people would think it was spelled that way when I named her. I thought of the flower lily, why would I add another L? Maybe I'm weird, but I think of the drug manufacturer "Lilly" when I see that.

Bryan can be spelled a few different ways with "Brian" being most common. DH and I LOVE the Y instead of the I because, I, personally LOVE LOVE LOVE the name Ryan and DH loves "Brian"...We compromised. LOL.
Now, Carolyn is a unique name. Not to popular anymore and yes, my DD will always have people misspelling her name. We spell it "Carolynn". DH felt it should be spelled "Carol" and "Lynn". It took me a while, but, again, we comprimised. When she's older, all she will have to say is combine the 2 names and you will have my spelling.

Lol, my nephew is Gavan. His parents chose that spelling because my lil niece called him Van Gogh (from baby einstein) throughout the whole pregnancy and they wanted to include the 'van' some way.
My DS is Braedan, we specifically wanted the 'dan' in honor of my beloved grandfather,Daniel

I love Bryan spelled that way too. Again, not what I meant b/c it's heard of. Carolynn would have her name mixed up even if she was plain ol Carolyn like me. So it's no win situation lol. I get my name mispelled often.

Sometimes it bothers me, sometimes it doesn't. I think people go for the unique/cuteness factor without realizing it may look silly to the rest of the world. A friend from HS named her daughter Mackenzie...nice, love the name...but spelled it M'kennzey

OMG! How funny b/c little Gavan has a little sister too. She is 2. It's not the same family b/c the mother is an only child and the father's nieces and nephews are my age. Maybe it's getting common now? Idk. Don't ever show your sister what I wrote. I feel smuckish. Ok shutting up now!

I HATE IT!!!
My mom did it to me and to this day I have to correct people all the time and (of course) I can never find MY name in any pre-personalized items.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
Every parent's choice to do what they want - I personally think it's lame - if you want to be original, pick an 'original' name, don't take a common name and totally change the spelling to something obscure.
And it's annoying for the kid -
I'm Marisa w/ one "s" - Not like my name was so common when I was a kid, I was the only one in the entire school district - but the 'common' spelling is two "s" - My whole life people were either calling me MarEEsa, or insisting I spelled my name 'wrong'

My name is Athina and the typical way of spelling it is Athena. I HATED it as a child. I always had to correct people (still do). It annoys me to the nth degree! I cant do the same thing to my child.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
mine is spelled kind of differently, though it is more common than it was 32 years ago. I spell both my girls' names differently than the norm, but they are far from popular names. I like the spelling better and feel it fits them. I don't care and I hope they don't either. There are so many different names now that a change in spelling isn't a big deal to me. I work with kids and see so many names and spellings.

I see nothing wrong with it but DO expect errors will be made his/her entire life that he/she will have to correct people on a constant basis even in adult life.

my sister's name is Geena. I still to this day have no idea why my mom spelled it like that. I have never seen it spelled that way other than Geena Davis. I mean I think its unusual but it doesnt really bother me.
There is a whole debate about my name too. I spell Jenn with two "N"s but I have friends with the same name who get mad if you spell it that way.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
My DS's name is Jackson, we call him Jax. We thought about doing Jaxon but I didn't want him to have to correct people who are spelling his name his entire life. It is just easier this way and it is the classic spelling of the name.
My name is Eileen and people have spelled it Ilene, Aileen, Eilleen, Arlene, etc my entire life. I also had a long German maiden last name. It was SUCH a PITA to have to spell my whole name to people so I kept that in mind when naming my DS.
I get what you are saying, obviously in the big scheme of things its not a big deal. I do think some people unnecessarily make changes to names w/o thinking it through (like - or ' lol) in order to be unique but to each his own.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I spelled DD's name Elisabeth. I have seen it that way before, so its not like I made it up. I don't want her to be called Liz and our last name starts with a Z so i didn't want a Z.
<---------- and as you can see, I am used to having a non-traditional spelling of a name. I like it better. It never bothered me, and yes people get it wrong all the time.
