Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
My name is Alison and people get it wrong all the time. It's frustrating! At my old company, my email address was even spelled wrong.
I have found though - that people can't even spell the more common names correctly, so I think to each their own (although I still get upset that I couldn't find many items with my name on it when I was young - although I can now)

If it's not your child I can't see why it would bother you.
ETA: I don't see any difference between giving your child a unique name and giving your child a common name with a unique spelling.
Listen- I don't lose sleep over it and frankly I can care less b/c ur right THEY AREN"T MY KIDS. It was a conversation that was brought up to me last night and I brought it to LIF. I am not a fan of made up spelling's (I'm not talking about common names with multiple spellings) and I also said in my OP that to each his/her own. As far as my kids names go, the difference to me is that my childrens names are indeed unique but NOT made up and either is the spelling!

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I am totally of the opinion "to each their own" - which includes the choice to be irritated.
What I keep thinking of, is that the alternate spellings that are accepted today were at one point unique and unusual. The spellings of today that are seen as very unique may be quite common place in 20 years. Names go along with trends, right now it is trendy to be unique, be it the name or the spelling, it is cool to be different.
Just look at the top 10 on SSA - no John or Sarah - Olivia is #3 for a girl! When we were kids did anyone actually know an Olivia? I'm 37 and I didn't know one! I knew a lot of Heathers, Maureens, AnneMaries and Julies but no Olivias, Isabellas, Sophias or Mias! I find this thread very interesting - from both perspectives

we spell Braedan that way instead of brayden - my DH liked it that way - but pretty much any way you spell that name you have to spell it out for them -he will always have to spell his last name anyway - it is a common last name that is spelled differently
And we spell DS's name B.
No matter how its spelled, he'll have to spell it out.
My name is J. I get asked at least 5 times a day how to spell my name. When I spell it, the reply is always, "oh, that was easy." I just go with the flow.

To each his/her own. As long as you don't mind your kid having to correct everyone for the rest of his life, go for it.
I prefer the plain easy route.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I'm not a fan of spelling a name differently and unique just for the sake of being different, but that JMHO. I have an Indian name, so growing up I found it ANNOYING when people mispronounced it, misspelled it, etc when its actually pretty simple. Because of that, DD's name is simple too. I find things like "Jessica" spelled "Jessikkah" (I think CaMacho's example) annoying, but that's JMHO

I did Meagan instead of Megan and it gets misspelled already. I also saw the cutest personalized ornaments, but they weren't her spelling.
I kind of regret not using the more traditional spelling.

DD has a unique spelling to her name.
DS has a more common name but is still mispelled because of the mult. spellings.

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I went to massage school with a girl named LOREN. I loved her name so much I really wanted to use it for one of my daughters. In the end I did not choose it because I knew the difficulties she would have in life having her name spelled differently, correcting everyone and never finding anything with her name on it (not that I find much with my girls names anyway)

DH and I went back and forth on this when we were naming your daughter..... We went with the "different" spelling Giuliana as opposed to Juliana and so far have not had any issues....

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I have the simplest name in the world, yet people spelled & pronounced it wrong my whole life.
With that said.. I really dont think it even matters, to be honest. I kind of like when names are spelled different- It makes them unique.
Let me add though....
Growing up I knew of a girl named: Jenifa and Anfernee.
Um... Jennifer & Anthony?

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
My name is always spelt wrong and pronounced wrong I never found anything with my name on it in 24 years, I'm still looking...
I wanted my kids to have names that are known, but not overly popular. I like that DS's name only has 1 spelling pretty much, even though everyone asks me to spell it. I think theyre just too lazy to sound it out. Theres never anything I've seen with his name on it either, but I agreed to this family name so I kinda knew what I was going to be in for My next kids' names will be more common...

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
i was worried about that when thinking up names for our future children. All of ours will be spelled differently i.e. Sofia, Izabella, Jakob, but none of them are made up. hate the made up names. they're almost as bad as the celebrities naming their kids pilot inspektor or apple. They need to realize these kids will have to go out in public eventually and when they submit their resume with a very different name or a very ethnic name, it can cost them the interview. part of the reason i refused to agree to use very ethnic names for our kids. (DH wanted to name our son Borys)

Re: Spelling a child's name different than the most common way...what's your feelings on it?
I didn't look at the other responses b/c I have to sign off but I wanted to chime in anyway .
Spelling a name differently sometimes bothers me when it seems like the parents were trying way too hard to be unconventional. I'll to try to think of some examples I have seen that irked me.
My own first name is not a common spelling. Most of the the time I do not bother to correct people unless it is on some sort of official document. I have learned that a health insurance claim can be denied and has to be resubmitted if the doctor misspelled my name. Most of the time I like having a unique spelling.
One of my good friends is Lynda...with a "y" as I spelled it and I think it is so pretty that way.

I have a very ethnic name. Although it surprises people that I speak perfect english at times ...it has it's advantages as well. You certainly don't get forgotten.
Picking my DS's name... I wanted an ethnic name that was also easy to pronounce for an American.

my name is spelled differently, and although it is still phonetic, people always change the pronunciation and make me sound Hawaiian.
I am all for it, but quite frankly am sick of correcting people for my whole life...
