Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)

With the recent funding cut & then subsequent reversal, I was wondering how many of us used Planned Parenthood.

I found it disturbing how many centers have been shut down. So I'm thinking that in terms of donations, what a great cause for me to consider donating...breast cancer screening, gynecological care, reproductive health, etc. for teens, the uninsured & low-income women.

Back in my 20s, birth control wasn't covered so Planned Parenthood was where everyone went.

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)

Yes. When I was uninsured, I had my yearly exams done there. I received bc there.

It was a pap I had there while waiting for my insurance to kick in that caught abnormal cells which COULD have become cervical cancer if left.

I have a good friend who is a medical assistant for PP location. They do a lot of good for a lot of women.

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)

Yes when I was 18 I got prenatal care there for a month or so before I could tell my parents I was preggers.

I also went for paps and BC after I was too old to be on my parents insurance and wasn't married to DH yet.

Yes - when I was in college and didn't have health insurance, I used PP for annual exams and for BC because I could get both done on a sliding scale.

Yes, i went there to get BC in high school, and continued going there all through college as well.

Unfortunately in a crazy twist of fate.. I was on my way to the one i went to in college (Boston) to pick up some bc pills when a gunman went in and shot the place up. It was horrible. A guy i went to high school with happened to be there that day also with his gf and was one of the people who got shot.
I vividly remember the anti abortion protesters who would gather outside the office and yell at me every time i went in there. They had an armed guard posted outside the offices incase things got really bad - and he was one of the ones who helped catch the gunman.

I never have, but I knew several girls in college that did because they didn't want to go through their parents' insurance for BCP.

Yes --- in the years after college when I had no health insurance because I was only a subtitute teacher, Planned Parenthood was where I got my exams and BC!

It is interesting too because looking back, the doctors that I saw there were very easy to talk to and kind towards me. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there if I was in a situation without insurance again!

I went there in college to get BC because I didn't want to tell my Mom that I wanted BC. I had a great experience there and would definitely donate to them.

Not for myself. I went with a college roommate once, and I take my clients there often.

That's horrible! I'm glad you weren't there when it happened.

I've always had good health insurance and so have never needed PP, but I think it's a good option for people who do.

On a semi-related note, I used to work for the radio station WDRE and it was in an office building with a women's clinic. There would be protesters outside yelling horrible things at me as I made my way into the building sometimes and trying to show me graphic pictures of fetuses. It was awful. I can't imagine how the women going in for medical care must have felt.

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)

No. My feelings are mixed about them. I absiolutely do NOT support teenage pregnancy in any form, and am quick to make a snide comment to DH if I see welfare mothers on the street or mothers with 6 babies and no decent job to help clothe/feed/raise them. If PP provides educational resources to prevent this from happening, I would donate to them and support them..

I went there even when I had a well paying job.

The prices they charged at the top tier were STILL less than what I had to pay thru my insurance if I went to a standard practice. And the hours were much more convenient (Saturday, Sunday, nights until 9 or 10PM.)

Not sure why you would have mixed feelings about them if that is what you are worried about. They provide medical support and cheap birth control, free condoms.

I don't think I'd be taking a huge leap in saying that if PP did not exist, there would be many more babies and many more women with medical issues.

How can you tell by passing them on the street that they are "welfare mothers" and what their job situation is?

To answer the question I have never gone for myself but went with a friend. I think it's great that they offer gyno care and bc to women who would otherwise would go without.
