Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)
Yes, whrn I didn't have health insurance in my younger years. My best friend's mother is the head nurse at the patchogue and west islip locations, so I would only go there. I was very happy with their level of service

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)
I did not go there. I have thankfully always had health insurance.
I appreciate what they do. It's often the only way people can get testing and prenatal care they can afford. I think the fact that they do perform abortions (as PP stated, on a very small percentage of patients) has made people villify them and only see them as a abortion provider.
Like one PP, I really have a problem with people who have multiple abortions as a for of birth control. I heard one woman on the train - who was by the way a well dressed adult - saying she'd had 8 abortions and I honestly thought that was just sick. But you really can't judge people. You don't know why someone is going into PP. You also don't know if someone is a "welfare mom". And honestly, better access to education and BC, which PP can provide will reduce unplanned pregnancies.
I look very young for my age, especially without makeup. I get people in stores ignoring me and/or talking down to me thinking I'm a child. It happened just this weekend at Costco. I was buying classes and the optometrist came out and saw me stressing about my purchase (I had just dropped $700 on glasses), and she was like "oh you have made such a great choice. you new glasses are going to give you so much confidence!' as if I were a teenager upset I had to get glasses. no, I was upset that I was paying full price for a floor sample frame. But anyway.
What i was getting at was I'm sure in a year or two, god willing, when I'm pregnant I am going to get looks and comments. If people think I'm a teenager and they see me prego, I can only imagine the judgements. Little do they know, I'll be married and 30 something. You really can't tell.
And then it's like, in one breath people condemn people for having more kids than they can afford, but don't support low cost access to contraception.
I don't get it.
The one way I did use PP when I was younger was to use their VERY helpful charts and online tools to decide on the right form of contraception for me. I was too nervous to go to a doctor. My mom is religious and when I was about 20 I said "maybe I should go to a gyn since I'm over 18" and she FREAKED about it asking WHY I needed to go. So PP did help me by providing info online.

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)
Absolutely!!!!!
I used it in college to get birth control and I think (can’t remember anymore) we went there for AIDS testing, etc. I used to be the one to drag all the friends in. LOL! I think I got tested every month just because my friends were too afraid to go so I got suckered in to taking them with and showing it was no big deal.
Planned Parenthood NEEDS to exist.

I used them when I was in college. I didn't have health insurance.
edited to add- I used them for my annual visits.. they are absolutely VITAL for that- I think I paid $28.. and then I went through them to get birth control and it was very, very inexpensive.

No. My feelings are mixed about them. I absiolutely do NOT support teenage pregnancy in any form, and am quick to make a snide comment to DH if I see welfare mothers on the street or mothers with 6 babies and no decent job to help clothe/feed/raise them. If PP provides educational resources to prevent this from happening, I would donate to them and support them..
Not sure why you would have mixed feelings about them if that is what you are worried about. They provide medical support and cheap birth control, free condoms.
I don't think I'd be taking a huge leap in saying that if PP did not exist, there would be many more babies and many more women with medical issues.
Its possible that if PP did not exist, there would be more unplanned pregnancies or mothers unable to be properly educated about birth control, etc..my concern is that some people view PP as a 'safety' place..this I see in this country, where high school girls get knocked up and then tell their families/boyfriends, "oh no, I am pregnant but dont worry!!!..places like PP are there to help people like me..if it happens again I will just go to PP again..They gonna take good care of me.." THAT type of abuse is what concerns me.
You know that people can get abortions in places other than Planned Parenthood, right?
PP is so much more than a clinic where someone can get an abortion - they're a resource for people who may not have much money, a safe place for teens who need bc but are afraid to let their parents know, or even are afraid to go to a family doctor.. they help educate women in how to take care of themselves and not have unwanted pregnancies, and then how to get the best pre-natal care if they do get pregnant.. Abortions are a small percentage (as other poster said) of their services, yet people seem to think that's all they stand for.

Sure. I got my birth control there in college.
I'm appalled that they've been targeted. They do so many positive things.

Re: Spinoff: Planned Parenthood. Have you been? (Poll)
When I was in college I used them for birth control. I had my mom's insurance that didn't cover birth control and in grad school I had no insurance. I purchased the thing through the school so that I could use the clinic there.

fyi...they DO provide education on safe sex, diseases, etc! my best friend worked for them for years doing that exact thing.
