No. My feelings are mixed about them. I absiolutely do NOT support teenage pregnancy in any form, and am quick to make a snide comment to DH if I see welfare mothers on the street or mothers with 6 babies and no decent job to help clothe/feed/raise them. If PP provides educational resources to prevent this from happening, I would donate to them and support them..
Not sure why you would have mixed feelings about them if that is what you are worried about. They provide medical support and cheap birth control, free condoms.
I don't think I'd be taking a huge leap in saying that if PP did not exist, there would be many more babies and many more women with medical issues.
Its possible that if PP did not exist, there would be more unplanned pregnancies or mothers unable to be properly educated about birth control, etc..my concern is that some people view PP as a 'safety' place..this I see in this country, where high school girls get knocked up and then tell their families/boyfriends, "oh no, I am pregnant but dont worry!!!..places like PP are there to help people like me..if it happens again I will just go to PP again..They gonna take good care of me.." THAT type of abuse is what concerns me.

Yup! I was 16 and away from home. The doctor I saw was the absolute nicest woman ever, which made me feel better, as it was my first time seeing a gyno.
I don't understand why snide comments about welfare and teen moms need to be brought into this convo but I'm sure the previous poster will be happy to know that the morning after pill I was given almost certainly prevented me from becoming a statistic

I have never used them, but I wish it had occurred to me back when I was uninsured. Instead I went to a regular gyn and it cost a fortune for the visits and birth control.

I went there even when I had a well paying job.
The prices they charged at the top tier were STILL less than what I had to pay thru my insurance if I went to a standard practice. And the hours were much more convenient (Saturday, Sunday, nights until 9 or 10PM.)
me too....
I started going there last year when I found myself with out insurace
now that I have insurace- I went back- I liked the doctor - and I didn't like the doctors that take my insurace
I felt a little out of place in the waiting room- but I plan on going back

Yeah, its a bit weird being the odd one out in the waiting room, but you get over it when you realize the moolah you're saving.

Yeah, its a bit weird being the odd one out in the waiting room, but you get over it when you realize the moolah you're saving.
it was $20 for my BC visit and it's free with my insurace for an exam
not bad- I used to pay $250 b/c the doc I liked didn't take my insurce
and ones that take my insurace now are all men- and I don't like that
I really felt bad for a few of the young girls there- you could see it in there face how scared they were
I am glad a place like Planned Parenthood is there to help

Yep. They didnt take my insurance, so even in the highest pay tier I was paying 100 dollars for a yearly exam, PAP and all the other tests. Then 10 bucks a pack for brand name pills.
With my insurance, it would be 30+ dollars for a brand name pack. And then 150 bucks to just walk into a regular practice, plus all the exams.

I have not, but it was a lifesaver for many girls I knew in high-school/ college who needed BC and could not tell their parents.

I used to work for PP in Development (fundraising) and people would be surprised to know that less than 10% of their patients have abortions. Just my random thought for the day.

In college I was a 'walker' at PP, where I and a few other people would escort a woman (usually a terrified teenager) into the building so that she didn't see the protesters. The names that the protesters called us were despicable.

The protesters are terrible and mostly seemed to be very old. They know the days that abortions are performed and would only be at the clinics on those days. At least that is how it was at the PP that I worked for.

While I completely disagree with your feelings, I'm curious as to what you think a teen who is pregnant should do? Also who do you know what kind of job someone has if you see them on the street?
Yes Planned Parenthood does provide educational resources, as well as contraception to teens. I was at their site looking at the resources for how to have "the talk" last week because my son is 10 & I'm not sure how to approach it. With our school's budget cuts, they cut our health classes. Personally I think it's not the time to cut heath classes. I know teen pregnancies are at the lowest in decades (sources: http://www.cdc.gov/TeenPregnancy/ and http://www.guttmacher.org/pubs/USTPtrends.pdf ) which they attribute to contraception so I don't think it's a bad thing.

Thank you--I was wondering that, because while that is what some people focus on it seems that people use them more for just an affordable clinic.

Slightly OT, but wow- I am surprised. Reproductive health was maybe 1 week in in the semester when i was in school, so we also learned important things like the importance of sunscreen and about the food pyramid (dated, I know).
With all the talk about teaching kids to be healthier I am surprised that is wear they cut, but it's always something I guess.

At least they are taking care of their unbron babies This argument makes no sense to me. Regardless whether you "support" teen pregnancy or not(and really who does?) the fact is, teens have sex, they get pregnant and PP exists not only for that but to provide healthcare as described above.

Yes --- in the years after college when I had no health insurance because I was only a subtitute teacher, Planned Parenthood was where I got my exams and BC!
It is interesting too because looking back, the doctors that I saw there were very easy to talk to and kind towards me. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there if I was in a situation without insurance again!
The same thing with me exactly! They were great.
This.

I think she might mean if they abuse the use of abortions, not that they shouldn't get prenatal care.
