Just wanted to be clear that I do not think everything should stay shut down. Not by a long shot. I am saying I believe we still need masks and capacity limits until more people are vaccinated. I agree with everything that's been opened so far- cuomo is a *********, but he isn't holding us hostage or taking away our rights. We have far more freedom here than most of Europe does, than California does. He is opening up madison square garden for crying out loud. Most schools in this state are open for in person learning since september - which is more than schools in many other states. Nyc high school students are remote, but that is the mayor, not cuomo. It has only been 11 months since NYC was burying its dead in potters field because there was nowhere else to put them. I am in full agreement that we can't afford another strict lockdown. Many people are suffering because of this and I fully understand that people need to feed their families and keep their health insurance. Things need to be open. But not without a mask mandate. Not without capacity limits. There is a very big difference between someone who can't feed their child dinner or pay their rent, and someone saying they wish they could go to a concert and sit next to a friend at a nail salon.
As a side...I was once suicidal. It bothers me when people bring up suicide over lockdowns and what are we going to do about it? I don't know- thousands of people lost their lives to suicide each month in this country way before covid lockdowns. Let's not pretend this is being made worse. Suicide has always been a very real problem that was ignored.
How about we open all 100% and let people decide if they want to go. You don’t feel comfortable, then stay home. Why is this so difficult to let people choose how they want to live?
My cousin won’t see friends and family until they get a vaccine. I have no problem seeing others, hugging and kissing and being inside. I can’t say well you HAVE TO feel comfortable as much as I do as they don’t. They haven’t said I need to get a vaccine even though they want to.
I don’t think suicide has been ignored. I have been to sadly, a few funerals of people who committed suicide. Being locked down has hurt many to the point of suicide and we keep pushing to keep things closed. It makes it worse for ones who had the feelings before this and now it might be even worse.
Simply put, opening everything up 100% and giving people the choice doesn't only affect the people who are choosing to live their best pre-covid life. People are suicidal from lockdowns? I actually get that because, like I said, I was once suicidal and went to a very dark place last spring. But, you know who else might be suicidal? The healthcare worker who has been traumatized more than all of us put together, and now they have to deal with the possibility of the wave of sickness and death starting all over again because everything is 100% open. It's not as simple as telling people to stay home if they are scared. I have never been scared of getting Covid. Never. I am now fully vaccinated. But even though I am not afraid of getting it, doesn't mean I didn't make sacrifices and not do some things. Because I wanted to protect others, including our healthcare workers.
Anyone can be suicidal, not even kids or healthcare workers. It’s not easy on many to stay home. All of us have sacrificed, I believe in the last year. There is no award if you (in general) didn’t see friends and family and only went out for work or groceries. [/QUOTE
I have seen family and friends since June. We stopped for awhile in December and January when numbers were bad again. My kids go to school, and after school activities. I did not hide in my house all year. Yes, anyone can commit suicide. But right now healthcare workers are dealing with the worst of this pandemic. The things I am hearing coming out of these hospitals is heartbreaking. But you know, all of this is a moot point because NY is not 100% open and won't be anytime soon.
Guess we will have to see how this Cuomo investigation goes to see how much more opens.

Re: Texas is open!
Is there some stay at home order in NY that I don't know about? People are allowed to leave their homes, which based on the traffic I sit in on my way onto the Island seems like many others are doing as well. I see people eating out , shopping, attending parties. Lets not pretend like we are still in lockdown. Just because things open 100% doesn't mean it's any safer to go visit Grandma and Grandpa that you haven't seen in months. It just means things are now open.

Re: Texas is open!
The more spread, the more likely it is that variants develop and proliferate. Variants that could be vaccine resistant. We are so close. I cannot understand what would motivate removing all precautions now and risking setting us all back so far. What Texas is doing is horrifying. Incomprehensible. And we will all have to live with the results.

Open up 100% and let people decide???? Are you for real??? Half of the population is dumb AF and still cannot manage to put a mask on their face but we should now trust them to make good choices in the best interest of all??? LOL That's funny. When the world is battling a once in a lifetime pandemic, your freedom to choose how you want to live gets tabled. NOBODY wants to live like this but like other viruses and diseases before this, it's a public health crisis that we have to get under control before the world opens up like normal.
Here's a better idea. Everyone hang in there a little longer because pretty soon we'll be at a point where most will be vaccinated and that will make lifting restrictions safer. There is no reason to throw away a year's worth of sacrifice because some are impatient.
Might I also remind you, we're not in lockdown. It's not like you can't go out and "live your life", it just cannot yet be in the same manner as before COVID.

Yep TX wants their residents to be able to decide. Why do you go straight to the “people are dumb af”? Having a degree and teaching kindergarten for 5 years doesn’t make you a genius or have more common sense. You should really stop putting people down and trying to tell them what they need to do. You do you.

Let's not look to TX as an example. They couldn't even take care of their own after a few inches of snow. That state is a disaster, this will blow up in their faces.
As an aside, why are you back on these boards? You most definitely were not missed. Conversations were civil, boards were calm and now that you're back it's nothing but nonsense again. Go back to the hole you were hiding in.

Texas is open!
With freedom comes responsibility. Not just responsibility to yourself, responsibility to others. I think the problem is people equate free with "I have my rights and never does anyone have to take them away." That's not how freedom works. Sometimes we need to temporarily give up certain freedoms for the greater good. I live my life. My kids go to school, My husband and I go to work. With the exception of December and January, we have been seeing a pod of specific family and friends since June- usually outdoors and with masks on. Now that many people in our pod have been fully vaccinated, we will begin to have small gatherings indoors and with no masks- with fully vaccinated people only. We go shopping, my kids have been in Target, trader Joe's, BJ's, stop and shop. They do after school activities and we rented a house in PA for a few days over spring break. We are living our lives and not locked up at home. The only thing we haven't done yet is indoor dining but I hopeful by the time October rolls around and it gets too cold for outdoor dining, we will be in a very different place. Every generation has their story. Ours will be COVID. Others lived through the great depression, or world War 2, or the Spanish flu. Life is not fair and it's not easy and I hate this as much as the next person. But we need to adapt and live with it because what other choice do we have? I hate Cuomo, but I thank God he didn't open up 100% yet. He has opened up quite a lot and I think what's open now is more than fair. Nobody thinks we should still be in full shutdown, we are just saying that people need to hang tight just a couple months longer. The end IS in sight.

Can I ask why you won’t do indoor dining? Don’t you think you are closer to people shopping then in a restaurant?

Open up 100% and let people decide???? Are you for real??? Half of the population is dumb AF and still cannot manage to put a mask on their face but we should now trust them to make good choices in the best interest of all??? LOL That's funny.
I'm sorry but I just need to point out that not that long ago you were disagreeing with me about the intelligence of the American people. Remember you were bringing up statistics about how half had to be above average intelligence - which is silly because American's are just a small part of the global population so when talking about human intelligence you kind of need to take into account the rest of the world. But now half of Americans are actually "dumb AF." You actually said to me:
Furthermore, for anyone to keep insisting that *most* Americans are stupid and easily influenced is nonsense.
To say half of us are dumb AF but to not think that all those dumb AF people would be easily influences by the media.... I don't get your logic. You pick and choose when it suites you. Sorry to go off topic...

I actually find the boards to be much more interesting when there is some debate. The past couple weeks were kind of a snoozefest

I don't think people living in glass houses should throw stones. NYs response to hurricane sandy was abysmal. I was without power with three very young children including an infant for over 2 weeks. Since then there have been multiple storms where I have been without power for days. LIPA and now PSEG are JOKES. The storm in texas was not just a couple inches of snow. It was a massive ice storm followed by sub zero weather for days in an area that doesn't typically go below 40.

You didn't really make your point here.
*Most* aren't dumb (as I said to you in that thread) but about half would fall under average intelligence. That's how averages and stats work. There is a median (midpoint/average) for intelligence whether globally or in this country. Naturally you'll have half of the population fall above and below that median. So no, MOST aren't dumb as I said to you the first time, but some are.

Because people take their masks off in restaurants.

But they are not seated closely to you and need to have them on it walk in and out and to the bathroom.

I eat out (indoors) about twice a week. Most places have you seated, at least in booths, next to each other but with a small piece of plexiglass in between the booths. I could see why some might not be comfortable with that.

Target and Starbucks in Texas will still be requiring masks.
Yeah I was going to say- I am sure individual businesses and places of work will still require masks. Their property, their rules. My company has an office in Texas- they aren't rushing to open it now that the state has been "opened". They are keeping it closed like all the other offices in the company.
Yep my family who lives there said they still have to wear a mask to work in their office.
Most large stores will still require masks, and individual places of business will still have the option to require masks.
DH went to Florida last month to golf and he was still required to wear a mask the same way he would have in NY as it is just now decided on an individual basis.

Of course it was because no one disagreed with you. The board was dead and no one was talking about real issues.

Yeah it sounds like it’s the decisions of the businesses. Larger nationwide ones might still stick to the masks but smaller ones might not.

You understand that pretty much everyone on here is mostly in agreement when it comes to issues such as Trump, Biden, COVID, vaccines and other social issues, right? Furthermore, with Trump gone there is FAR less political chaos, people are calmer now.
But most importantly, once the cancer on this board, that would be YOU, was removed people went back to having civil, productive conversations instead of wasting their time dealing with your ridiculousness.
