For the record, the mayor's of Houston and Austin are horrified that the governor is lifting restrictions, and are begging their residents to please still wear masks and socially distance. Meanwhile, parts of italy go back on lockdown from March 6th- April 6th due to a much lower caseload than we have here.
They are requesting Italy to go on lockdown. Obviously these lockdowns are not working.
Just like avoiding people who are sick, you are not going to get sick. When I have worked in offices, if one person gets sick, usually a bunch get it too.
As soon as you go back out and your immune system is low, you will get sick and it starts it all over again.
How many times and years can we be on lockdown?
Easy solution. Get vaccinated.

People think where we are today is bad? What are you going to do if the variants take off and we are put back into a lockdown situation similar to last year? That's my fear. And the more we open before vaccinations take hold, the more likely this is what will happen sometime in the next month or so.
Sorry, but you are the media’s favorite viewer. The more you watch the more fear you are having. Turn off the TV, read less online and be safe but if you follow everything they say, we will be in double masks until 20 who knows when.
Says the one who gets ALL of her information from right wing conspiracy sites. Seriously, most of what you say is rooted in misinformation and falsehoods so I'm not sure why you're calling her out.
Go get your vaccine, contribute to the solution and not the problem.
I am not in fear and both sides are putting fear into people. I watch News12 everyday and they have turned more left over the years so, yes, I listen to main stream media that is not right wing.
Thanks but again no one will talk me into getting a vaccine. I will even be cancelling my vacation this year if I am required to get one. 2 out of 4 people in my house are eligible to get it and all 4 of us do not want it.
This isn't about "fear", it's about common sense and science both of which you're ignoring because you're an "armchair Google doctor".
Are you vaccinated against small pox? Measles? Rubella? Polio? Have you taken any of the other countless vaccines available to protect the public health and your own? You have no reason to not get the vaccine except FEAR. You have NOTHING to back up your claims that it doesn't work or that it's dangerous, you're just scared.
When the option is possible lifelong health issues, possible death and no normalcy in life you put your faith in science and doctors and take the damn vaccine. If you won't, then stop whining that things aren't back to normal yet.
Thank you. My God, how do people still not get this, 12 months later? I DO NOT judge anyone who does not take the vaccine. But then you have ZERO right to complain about restrictions and your kid not being able to have a playdate or you dancing at a wedding.
Everyone has every right to complain as we have a governor who has power control issues. Other places have less restrictions and are not spiking.
Every point we've all made has gone over your head. COVID hasn't gone away, this isn't over......... yet.
This isn't about the governor, it's about people taking personal responsibility to help things get better for all. Something you've shown zero interest in doing. Things can't go back to normal just because you want them to, this is process. The vaccine will get us there as long as the majority does the right thing by getting vaccinated.
You are willing to take something that you have no clue how many times you need to take it and if it will really work. As I have stated I do all that I am told to do but life needs to go on after a year.
Please, go do some research on the vaccine and educate yourself.
Life can't go on until we fix the problem or we'll be right back where we were last March. How do you not understand that???
We will never be back to last March as we have more experience. People are not put on ventilators as much like they were, that were killing them. They know what to prescribe when told you are positive. Things that should be in everyone’s diet anyway and could be one of the reasons people have gotten sick.
If people refuse to be vaccinated and/or forgo restrictions to get back to normal there is ZERO doubt that cases will spike AGAIN and we'll have to spend MORE time battling back.
Any state lifting these restrictions are being negligent and stupid.
The bandaid has to be ripped off eventually. Someone needs to take that first step. I am sure these places will be watched carefully and will do what they need to if it gets out of control. Just like anything in life, you need to take a chance. They feel the chance is now and will be ok. Maybe they will be wrong but they will never know if it is not done.
I have family in TX who said they still have to wear a mask at work and will always carry them around. They said they will see how comfortable they feel but when the bars opened a long time ago, they went right away and felt ok with that.

You can rip the band aid off AFTER the majority has been vaccinated and the threat of further spreading has been minimized. Lifting the restrictions now as we're FINALLY moving towards getting this under control is epic level stupid.

My body. My choice. I will choose how to live my life. And I will complain when someone tries to deny my right to live. I am an adult and can make my own decisions. Don’t tell me I can’t complain because I won’t get a vaccine I don’t agree with.
So don't take the vaccine but stop b!tching that you're miserable and don't have a normal life.
I don’t know who you think you are to tell me that. This is what’s wrong with the world, people like you on your high horse and think you know everything. The vaccine is not a miracle pill that will end covid. It’s just going to help the elderly and compromised not die from covid. There is zero reason for me to take this, the flu shot, my son to take the guardasil vaccine, etc....
They still don’t know how long the vaccine even lasts. If it’s only 3 months than it’s pointless in my opinion. But once the majority of those who NEED the vaccine get it than let’s open up.
This is the most ignorant, misinformed comment I have ever read. It's almost as if you don't even know anything about the vaccine. The vaccine is to protect EVERYONE, not just the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. It's so if you get COVID the severity of your symtoms is minimized and you get better faster and with that, have less of a chance of having long term health effects or worse, dying. It'll also help to slow and maybe at some point, stop the rampant spread and then we can go back to life without a mask and social distancing. Maybe if you actually educated yourself on the vaccine you could make a more informed decision about whether or not to take it. Just to be clear, since you brought up the flu, COVID is not the flu and it's frightening that people still need to be told that.
Even if you need a shot every year for some new strain, who cares. What's your alternative plan? Live like this forever? It's sad that social media and the internet has made it such that instead of trusting doctors, experts and science people are more inclined to trust their own half a$$ed "research", the meme their friend posted or some garbage they saw on You Tube. The dumbing down of this country over the last decade is scary. It's why a year later we STILL have to convince people that COVID is real, a masks work, scientists aren't out to get you and the vaccine will END this pandemic and all the restrictions that go along with it.
But cool. Don't take the vaccine. The rest of us will pick up the slack for the ones who want to do nothing more than whine about how things aren't fair or normal but refuse to be proactive about making it better.
Do what you think is right and I’ll do what I think is right. I won’t sit and lecture you and tell you are wrong for feeling a certain way. This is America and we can choose, isn’t it beautiful.
Choose whatever you wish, just stop whining about a situation that you're not willing to help change.
Omg stop telling me I can’t “whine” or complain. I got my elderly parents and I laws vaccines. I wear the mask. Don’t tell me I’m not willing to help just because it’s not the same way as you. Get over yourself. There are allowed to be different opinions beside your own. So I’ll continue to complain about these over the top restrictions because I feel they are too extreme. My opinion. Doesn’t matter if I have a vaccine or not, my opinion.

Texas is open!
Get the vaccine, don’t get it. Most people will get the vaccine. This j and j one will be a game changer. One dose and it doesn’t have to be in super cold temperatures. Personally I will not get the vaccine for a while. I have been working with the public for 22 years with clients who do not know social distancing or basic hygiene and have never gotten the flu shot. I am willing to wait for the vaccine to be out for about a year then will consider it.Had a mild case of Covid in December. No after effects. Things will open up soon. The real disgrace is that there are kids who haven’t set foot in a school for a year. I have witnessed what it is doing to these kids and it isn’t pretty. No one should be telling anyone to go get the vaccine or else they can’t complain. Live your life follow the rules but random strangers on the internet shouldn’t be lecturing others on what they should or shouldn’t be doing. How about prefacing your comment with I respectfully disagree with you? The whole I am right and you are wrong is a bad look

This is from January. If you look just at the top one, GA, numbers have dropped since then.
If you bothered to read it, you would see it says the data is updated through February 28. That's 3 DAYS AGO!
The graph from the article u posted, shows a steady decline since the beginning of Jan. It also says “8% of hospitals”. Based on that same data, I wouldn’t say “many hospitals” (like u said) are “currently” overwhelmed.

For those of you opposed to the vaccine but also opposed to any restrictions, what is your solution? You can't just tell the elderly and immunocompromised people to stay home forever so you can live your life. The healthcare workers can't handle another wave. With no vaccine and no restrictions, hospitals will collapse. I just don't understand how people still don't get this.
Yes anyone can choose what they want to do in life. Many elderly have no problem living life now as well as immune compromised people. It is an individual decision and some people are more scared than others as with everything in life. Hospitals know now how to handle this virus now better so the hospitals won’t get overwhelmed.
Nothing improves if everyone wants to do their own thing and not consider others.
We will never know if we don’t try as these other states are doing. Considering others more than yourself is causing suicides, depression, mental health deteriorating. Not saying not be considerate but this should be a choice how to live.
I was just looking at the steady and alarming rise of numbers for suicide, depression, etc for kids and I cannot believe people are not more alarmed to see this. I guess til it hits home, that’s when it’s gonna matter
Off topic, but kind of related to your point.
The rate of suicide, suicide attempts, suicidal thoughts, among transgendered and gay kids has been and continues to be an alarming and horrifyingly high statistic for years before covid (this group has among the highest rates of any other), and yet that never, or very rarely, gets mentioned. People now want to talk about suicide rates among kids because covid restrictions personally affect them and their family, and rightfully so. But they prioritize this type of suicide over the other because the other doesn't affect them. Perhaps their kid isn't gay or transgendered so this statiatic has little bearing on their life. Any type of suicide is incredibly awful and sad, but it seems many people want to prioritize one over the other. I'm only saying this to point out that you're 100% correct. People cherry pick statistics when it matters to them and their personal life. Just read through these threads to see it. Saying people only care about covid deaths and not covid suicide is the same as saying people only care about covid suicide and not lgtbq suicide. I can guarantee you that the next thread about inclusivity in society most of those same people will be saying it's ridiculous for society to be inclusive because toys/books/movies/whatever the topic is has more value than lives and keeping things as is makes them personally more comfortable than the alternative, regardless of consequence. Nothing must ever change. Everything must always be exactly the way it always has been and anyone that thinks otherwise is just crazy. Look at the plastic potato thread for example.

Yeah I was going to say- I am sure individual businesses and places of work will still require masks. Their property, their rules. My company has an office in Texas- they aren't rushing to open it now that the state has been "opened". They are keeping it closed like all the other offices in the company.

Target and Starbucks in Texas will still be requiring masks.
Like I mentioned earlier, large chains make a corporate decision on mask wearing. Any business can decide to require customers to wear masks to enter the premises. I am sure that is happening in most states without mask mandates. For people who think this is the end of the world and it will set everything back it probably won’t because most people will probably be responsible since this behavior and practices have been going on for a year now.

Yeah I was going to say- I am sure individual businesses and places of work will still require masks. Their property, their rules. My company has an office in Texas- they aren't rushing to open it now that the state has been "opened". They are keeping it closed like all the other offices in the company.
Yep my family who lives there said they still have to wear a mask to work in their office.

Because that's been working so well. I predict an increase in "I got this here disability badge" excuses

The last year and science have already taught us that what TX is doing is stupid. But I guess people will never learn.
Obviously this is no surprise but I do not think what texas is doing is stupid. I am actually questioning how much social distancing and masks in public matter when the vast majority of people are still choosing to congregate indoors with others, even in small groups. Our rates are not great here. Unless you want to shut everything down for the next few months until everyone who wants to has been vaccinated I doubt they will see spikes bigger than what they already have down there.
Perhaps the Governor is taking other issues into account - like the unemployment rate and the need for government assistance. Unfortunately it is a balancing game even thou there will be casualties. It is all wonderful and great to think that the entire world can just shut down so no one has to die from Covid, but unfortunately, people need to eat. You need to look at it from the other perspective - opening things allows people to work and provide for their families. It enables them to have health insurance. While it is easy to quantify covid related deaths and illnesses it is not as easy to quantify some of the other, long term, devastating effects that shutting the economy down will have on us. Not to mention the effects on education that will be seen for years to come. The problem is that people have sacrificed for a year now and many are suffering in unimaginable ways and I don't mean not being able get a mani pedi. I mean not being able to feed your children at an adequate level or provide your family with healthcare. For me personally, I don't care - open things, close things. But I can afford to ride it out. I can't imagine what it's like for those that can't afford it.

I think you hit the nail on the head with this. Generally, people are selfish by nature so they are going to opt for the thing that works best for them and their family. If they can ride out the pandemic in the comfort of a nice large house, ordering in meals and groceries every week, and working from home keeping a paycheck, of course it will be easy to say keep everything shut down. If you are a restaurant owner and your livelihood is dependent on restaurants being open then of course you will say open everything up. I think the thing that bothers me most is that no one is wiling to even contemplate the other side. Getting covid is not an automatic death sentence. For most people it is only marginally more dangerous than the flu. That is a statistical fact. People are entitled to their opinions on both sides but it's actually infuriating when someone on here and IRL expresses an opinion and they are accused of whining and complaining, etc. I can completely understand wanting to keep your family safe but it can't be at the expense of another family having to go hungry. There has to be some balance here.

Lot of people ignoring the post about homophobic Majorie Taylor Green hanging a hate flag outside her office basically shitting on her colleague’s gay child but now suicide is an issue. Got it.

Re: Texas is open!
I don’t understand why people are so bothered that TX is lifting mandates and opening up their state. I bet all those people that are struggling are more than grateful and happy that now they can finally send their kids to school and open up their businesses. Isn’t that what many of us throughout the country want? The well-being of our kids and the right to earn a living? Nobody is saying they cannot wear a mask, or social distance, they’re leaving it up to the people. If someone doesn’t feel comfortable, guess what they can do...wear a mask. TX is not the only one that’s doing this, other states and even countries like Sweden have not incorporated mandates and their numbers are nowhere near numbers in states like NY, they haven’t done this before and they’re not doing it now. I’m happy this is happening cause it proves to us that there is such a think as natural immunity and that the only cure doesn’t just come in the shape of a vaccine.
And please for the love of all that’s holy, stop trying to “pick up the slack” for those that are hesitant and won’t take the vaccine. My health is not ur responsibility and it should never be, it is my responsibility to take care of my own health and we should all feel the same way. As we should all know, vaccines come with risks and the last thing u should do is to take a risk of something happening to u because u were told it’s ur responsibility to take care of my health.

Texas is open!
Just wanted to be clear that I do not think everything should stay shut down. Not by a long shot. I am saying I believe we still need masks and capacity limits until more people are vaccinated. I agree with everything that's been opened so far- cuomo is a *********, but he isn't holding us hostage or taking away our rights. We have far more freedom here than most of Europe does, than California does. He is opening up madison square garden for crying out loud. Most schools in this state are open for in person learning since september - which is more than schools in many other states. Nyc high school students are remote, but that is the mayor, not cuomo. It has only been 11 months since NYC was burying its dead in potters field because there was nowhere else to put them. I am in full agreement that we can't afford another strict lockdown. Many people are suffering because of this and I fully understand that people need to feed their families and keep their health insurance. Things need to be open. But not without a mask mandate. Not without capacity limits. There is a very big difference between someone who can't feed their child dinner or pay their rent, and someone saying they wish they could go to a concert and sit next to a friend at a nail salon.
As a side...I was once suicidal. It bothers me when people bring up suicide over lockdowns and what are we going to do about it? I don't know- thousands of people lost their lives to suicide each month in this country way before covid lockdowns. Let's not pretend this is being made worse. Suicide has always been a very real problem that was ignored.

How about we open all 100% and let people decide if they want to go. You don’t feel comfortable, then stay home. Why is this so difficult to let people choose how they want to live?
My cousin won’t see friends and family until they get a vaccine. I have no problem seeing others, hugging and kissing and being inside. I can’t say well you HAVE TO feel comfortable as much as I do as they don’t. They haven’t said I need to get a vaccine even though they want to.
I don’t think suicide has been ignored. I have been to sadly, a few funerals of people who committed suicide. Being locked down has hurt many to the point of suicide and we keep pushing to keep things closed. It makes it worse for ones who had the feelings before this and now it might be even worse.

I wonder if the people in Sweden actually stay home when sick and know good hygiene??!!
I’m over the mandates but I have to say that people here are gross!!
Also i agree with no one should worry about other people being vaccinated and protecting them.
Once the vaccine is widely available to all then there should be no need for any mandates. If people choose to get vaccinated that’s there problem and no one else’s. They can take the risk to get and deal with whatever comes with it.

Simply put, opening everything up 100% and giving people the choice doesn't only affect the people who are choosing to live their best pre-covid life. People are suicidal from lockdowns? I actually get that because, like I said, I was once suicidal and went to a very dark place last spring. But, you know who else might be suicidal? The healthcare worker who has been traumatized more than all of us put together, and now they have to deal with the possibility of the wave of sickness and death starting all over again because everything is 100% open. It's not as simple as telling people to stay home if they are scared. I have never been scared of getting Covid. Never. I am now fully vaccinated. But even though I am not afraid of getting it, doesn't mean I didn't make sacrifices and not do some things. Because I wanted to protect others, including our healthcare workers.

Anyone can be suicidal, not even kids or healthcare workers. It’s not easy on many to stay home. All of us have sacrificed, I believe in the last year. There is no award if you (in general) didn’t see friends and family and only went out for work or groceries.

I have seen family and friends since June. We stopped for awhile in December and January when numbers were bad again. My kids go to school, and after school activities. I did not hide in my house all year. Yes, anyone can commit suicide. But right now healthcare workers are dealing with the worst of this pandemic. The things I am hearing coming out of these hospitals is heartbreaking. But you know, all of this is a moot point because NY is not 100% open and won't be anytime soon.
