i do not know much about these people but i am curious, you guys say the younger ones watch the babies?
do they want to? is it what is expected of them? do they ever talk on camera about how they feel about having that responsibility?
and that is one active uterus
the older ones watch the little ones. basically, they have a buddy system.
they actually seem to love it. the younger ones and the older ones. but it's all they know.
the girls tend to do a lot of the cooking, cleaning, and sewing/making of clothes. they also seem to do the shopping.
they have group family prayers... and homeschooling sessions.
ETA: night feeding, etc. is never really discussed. I'm sure at some points the parents step in. I think a lot of the last 2 years though, Michelle, the mother, has been with Josie since she was such a special needs case.
ETA again: each time they announce a new pregnancy to the kids... they ALL get super excited and they partake in the picking of the names too!! so they must love it since they seem so excited over it (the young and older ones really seem happy when she announces!)... Me... I'm just like GEEZ! ANOTHER one?!?! AAHHHH!!!
they make money from property investments they have. they own a bunch of land and businesses rent from them. so the father is able to make money to support the family without having to put in the amount of hours our sani DH's would!! the oldest son, the married one with 2 kids.... he owns a used car shop.

This isn't about her 'not caring' about her carbon footprint or overpopulation. Her faith - her RELIGION - has taught her that GOD knows better than she does, than you do, than anyone does. She feels that God will not allow her to get pregnant when he feels that she's done. Until then, she just keeps on keeping on. She is probably petrified on some level. She is probably worried about her health and her children's health and her unborn child's health.. but she has faith that God has not misled her and that everything will be okay.
I think it's admirable that she has that much faith. I hope she and the baby are safe.
I don't know. I'm just confused by this point of view. What if God told them to kill someone? Would that make it okay? Where is the line? If one truly believes that they are being socially irresponsible by having this many children (and I certainly do believe that), then I don't see how the fact that they believe in God makes it okay.
Well, I don't think she is saying that God is telling her to have all these kids. She believes this is a plan god has for her.... to just get pregnant how ever many times he wants her to be. The whole thing started with her when she had her first pregnancy and miscarriage. She wrote that she was on birth control and got pregnant... she ended up miscarrying and believes the mc to be due to the birth control. she felt incredibly guilty for that... and it seemed like she felt she somehow messed up gods plan and gift for her. so they basically vowed to never use birth control and to throw caution to the wind... just leaving it all up to gods hands to grant them however many kids they end up with. It's not so much a matter of hearing god tell her to do these things... so the killing or any of that wouldn't ever come into play.
i think it's A LOT of kids to have. I don't know that I think it's fair to the older kids at all... being they have to raise the younger ones. I think it raises a lot of medical issues, especially now with the last baby. BUT it's not my decision to make. These people are not on public assistance of any kind. They are actually very decent people who make sure to instil morals into each of their kids. So sure they are overpopulating Arkansas but at the same time... they have some great core values and so I'm torn on it all. I certainly don't mind them the way I would for someone living in the projects to be on their 8th kid, totally living off the system wearing the newest jordans while the kids all suffer. I guess to me... at least they are overpopulating with decent human beings.
I also want to add.... and as crazy as this might sound... the carbon footprint thing... they probably have a smaller carbon footprint than most families of substantially smaller sizes. They only buy 2nd hand stuff (clothes, shoes, baby stuff, etc).... their house is well equipped with modern energy saving conveniences, etc. They had a whole episode on it.
I'm not saying that God is telling her to have children. I am saying that if you have ultimate faith in God, and it causes you to act socially irresponsibly, when can we start to blame you? I realize that God speaking directly to her is extreme, but it's also perfectly possible and there are plenty of very religious people who say that God speaks to them. My question is, if He told her to kill and she did, could she say that it's okay because she's following God's path?
As to the carbon footprint thing, I 100% disagree with you. Maybe they use less energy than another family with 13 or 14 children, but there's no possible way that their carbon footprint is smaller than most families. They have an 7000-sq foot house with two restaurant-size kitchens (including one that I think they even call a deli or a diner), four washing machines, and four dryers, and that's just what I can think of off the top of my head. Buying second hand clothes is great, but come on. I can't even imagine what their electricity bill is every month.

The older kids are "buddies" with the younger kids. Yes, it is expected of them and I don't think they have a choice. I don't think these kids have their own minds to think that it might be wrong.

Wow. Well, I don't watch their show so I don't know much about them personally but hey, good for them. They're taking care of their kids & not relying on the taxpayers to do it for them. As long as the kids are raised right given love & well taken care of, I think it's fine. But I have to give them credit because there's NO WAY I'd be able to handle that.

I'm sorry... I just find the whole first paragraph to be reaching. I can't at all fathom that happening in this case. They don't believe they are acting socially irresponsibly... and neither does the whole movement they are a part of... it's called Quithem.. something... I can't recall exactly. But they basically take the bible literally and have a profound love for children. Their whole reason for living is surrounded by children. It doesn't stretch into a "god spoke to me and told me to do things (like kill someone)" aspect. Regardless of what religion she follows and how intently she follows it, it's all still her choice to have all these kids.... I don't know that I've ever looked at in a way in which she thought it wasn't. She knows that she basically chooses to live her life this way... she's just putting her destiny into her faith and gods hands. For what it's worth.. I don't think ANYONE can say hey I killed someone because god told me to. That's never acceptable to me. Not even for the woman who starved her 2 year old to death because she thought god wanted her to. It's insane. Having 20 kids might be insane to you or I... but it's not at all the same kind of insane as killing someone would be. It's their right to have as many kids as they would like. It's no one's right to kill anyone.
As far as the carbon footprint thing is concerned... I'm just stating what I've seen on an episode of theirs before. They do what they can in terms of trying to limit their carbon footprint.... and I personally know families of 4 who do NOTHING at all in regards to this and are completely oblivious to the concept. I think they have wood stoves and solar panels... but I'm not 100%. The episode I saw on this topic was some time ago. I don't watch the show religiously either... I've only seen a few episodes.
Like I said though... I'm torn on it all. there are some really good morals and ideologies they instill in their children. One I personally loved... was "your neighbor comes first"... basically look out for everyone else before yourself..... not to be selfish. this way you have all these people thinking of you before you even have to. It's a nice dream of a way the world could be a better place. At the same time.. I'd never have 20 kids. I guess for me it's more of a "to each their own" situation. There are far worse families to pick apart... like octomom.

Yes but god forbid everyone thought like this? How socially responsible is that? Like I said in my other post, because they CHOOSE to put themselves in the public eye, I will judge their actions.
maybe I'm overtired here... but I'm not fully understanding what you are writing in response to what you quoted.
I would like to imagine everyone thinking like this... to reduce their carbon footprint. It's very important, globally, to minimize our level of consumption. I get they have a large family... but they do more on this aspect than most families of much smaller sizes... so I can't pick them apart on this particular topic.
I try not to judge.... even those in the public eye. But judging is a human emotion and we all do it at times.
I think I probably better explained myself in the first post I wrote (not in response to yours )
Yes they're doing some recycling etc but there is no way all the energy they're using, food they're consuming, land they're taking up etc is just a little bit of a carbon footprint....
My point was that God forbid everyone thought like them (IMO, putting religion > social responsibility) in the name of having huge families...I can't imagine how much worse we would be off.
I also wrote above they all "seem" happy because THAT IS ALL THEY KNOW. I don't know how realistic that is unless they want all their kinship to say on the land (just like a cult). And I love how they're teaching their girls to be subservient to the males ---JMO! The girls have to walk in front of the boys to make sure there are no other women around dressed improperly...and if there are the girls give the boys a code to put their heads down till they're out of sight ---vice versa does not happen...hmm...
Seems hypocritical to say their faith led them to this many babies...and their faith led them to be on TV? Have their kids marriage on TV? Sounds like a convenient excuse.
And the home as a church thing.. can you imagine if everyone in America claimed their home as a church? This is abusing the system just like when others complain "people in the ghetto abusing the system"
I guess we'd have no money for schools, construction, parks etc
They had all those children and couldn't afford to house them unless they found a way to make it work...
The father was in Congress found a loop hole in the system to avoid him from paying his taxes...just because THEY aren't paying taxes, doesn't mean SOMEONE is not...who do you think picks up that bill??
No wonder why they're debt free...
Saw this online somewhere (in reference to them):

Well technically they are using a loophole, claiming their house as a church so they don't have to pay taxes...I'm SURE taxpayers are picking up this cost

Groucho: Why do you have so many children? Female Contestant : Well, I love my husband very much. Groucho: Hey, I enjoy a good cigar, but I take it out o
IDK... like I've said.. i'm torn on it all. I see both sides. I really do.
Where you say the part about "can you imagine if everyone was like this?" in regards to consumption and having so many kids..... my first thought is.... they are actually good decent people... and I do wish many more people in America, in the world were more like that.
i never heard anything about claiming the home as a church. this is the first i'm hearing of it actually.
i also never saw the part with the girls walking infront of the guys to make a motion that the guys can't look because someone wasn't dresses appropriately. this is also new to me.
i don't see what's so awful about having a tv show. that doesn't bother me at all. plenty of idiots get tv shows.... hello Kardashians!!
you wrote this: "Seems hypocritical to say their faith led them to this many babies...and their faith led them to be on TV? Have their kids marriage on TV? Sounds like a convenient excuse." This part I disagree with. I believe their faith did lead them to have this many kids... the publicity came after they had about 16 kids or so... their faith and beliefs in their life plan came years before any televised appearance. They had an opportunity that arose from having so many children and they took it. I actually don't fault them for having the show and the books they have. IMO their faith did lead them on the path of being on TV.

She said tonight they are Baptists.
not their religion per se... they are a part of a movement... it's called: Quiverfull” movement I just looked it up.

I just see it as 2fold. YES in some aspects the world would be much worse off with sooo many kids.. BUT if we could say trade some garbage people for these people, I actually see the world as a much better place in terms of some of the morals they uphold. I do agree they tend to go off the deep end with some of their teachings... in terms of the sheltering, etc. But I do admit I like their wholesome outlook and the good decent people they really do seem to be.
I don't have much on the tax aspect because I've never heard it before... I'd have to do more research on that before formulating a full opinion on it.

See now that's playing God
Honestly, IMO, I see them as being no better than people on welfare that abuse the system (you know, the ones that others are so quick to point to show what is wrong w/our gov't). I see them as the same thing, packaged in a "prettier" box. JMO though!
Definitely look into the tax thing...I'm sure its not something they brag about on their show

I agree that everyone cannot be doing this. It would be awful for our planet. I agree with that.
I just wouldn't mind swapping certain members of society. haha. I shouldn't say anymore on this topic.

Right, if everyone did this, it would be horrible for our planet. Hence, why its selfish and socially not responsible.

No, I'm saying if all people had this many kids...our earth would be much worse off
And I still don't see the response to the tax loophole and claiming their house as a church
I don't watch their show, but if they're on TV, I'm sure they have some say as to what is filmed and what is not, so I don't know how accurate a picture that is
And you are basically arguing my point here when you say this: "i don't see what's so awful about having a tv show. that doesn't bother me at all. plenty of idiots get tv shows.... hello Kardashians!! "
Honestly, IMO, I see them as being no better than people on welfare that abuse the system (you know, the ones that others are so quickly to point at to show what is wrong w/our gov't). I see them as the same thing, packaged in a "prettier" box. JMO though!
Definitely look into the tax thing...I'm sure its nothing something they brag about on their show
Oh gosh.. I don't at all. Seeing things I've seen... I'm not even just talking about people on welfare abusing the system. There's just so many filthy people out there. Case in point... the penn state scandal going on right now. I'm speaking more generally than just those abusing welfare. I'd much rather these people.
I'll have to look into the tax part. I don't claim these people to be perfect at all. I just like some of their moral standards and ethics... not all of them but there are some admirable ones that I think the world could benefit from if more people held some of their beliefs/teachings. Again, not all of them. I'm not saying we should all find tax loopholes and teach our kids to never dance, etc.

I think the point is that if everyone had families this size, we would not be talking about "some garbage." We'd be talking about a population that's about 11 times larger than the current population. It's simply not sustainable, and to me, it is selfish and irresponsible that they are taking a path that, if everyone took it, would destroy the planet.
I agree with your point.. but in a sense you are twisting what I am saying. You are quoting me on the "some garbage"... and I'm talking about replacing garbage people with them.
And swapping members of society with them...
That's why i said I shouldn't say anymore on this topic... it's not going to come out right. And I don't mean it in an awful way...

Re: THE DUGGARS EXPECTING THEIR 20TH!!!
I watched the show tonight and when she was asked about overpopulation, she said that it was a myth and then Jim Bob said that there can't be overpopulation when so much of Arkansas has barren land.

I honestly do agree with the fact that all families cannot go out and do this. And I strongly feel their children shouldn't follow in their footsteps. It's just too much of a burden on our resources. I do believe that. I'm not at all arguing that point.
I just happen to find some gray area in it all... mostly because I don't find these kids to be "bad people" and I'd much rather them around than some of the crap people I hear about on a daily basis on the news, stories people tell, etc. I also do like *some* of the teachings and morals... which in turn ties right into my outlook on the kids. there are just some aspects I see in them that i wouldn't mind others in the world obtaining as well.
It's socially irresponsible in terms of resources... but IDK that I find it socially irresponsible in terms of their morals portrayed (I can't speak of what I don't see). That's where the swapping comes into play. It would be nice if everyone could really live as hunky dory as they do and we didn't have these child predators, molesters, rapists, murders, thieves, morally corrupt people in the world. That's more where I'm coming from.
