I don't think having the MAP pill available encourage kids to have unprotected sex. To me, that argument is like saying that more kids will have sex if you give them a condom. These kids will have unprotected sex regardless. The only thing the MAP will affect is the amount of unplanned pregnancies.
Its much easier to take the MAP then to use a condom, or take a pill everyday.....this is exactly why I think it will increase the amount of unprotected sex people have....esp kids!
above, a poster shared her story of taking the MAP. Her experience is not one I'd like to go through ever! I doubt anyone would chose that over a condom, or a birth control pill.
Im not talking about in cases of rape, and Icomp. understand why pills like this are out there....and am not saying they should be banned all together....thats why there are Dr.s
You are never asked about your sexual exp. and would not have to share such a painful exp.
Shelly- a 14 yr old girl, is less likely to know the side effects of MAP.....but more likely to know "her boyfriend dosent like condoms" and in order to get the pill she'd have to see a Dr, and then her parents might find out shes having sex....
If MAP is otc...that would be that persons best bet, and easiest way out!

While I agree with you about condoms.. Everyone should use them. And anyone who uses the M.A.P as birth control is an idiot. Not everyone has side effects.
Those that don't have side effects from taking the MAP should be considered very lucky. I know someone that took it (was a friend - not someone I got pregnant) and she was horrible and laid up in bed for DAYS.

I took it 2 days after my rape. I was nauseous for 2 days but otherwise, I was fine.

Re: The Morning After Pill
I have talked to 3 people one VERY close to me who have taken it and none of them had side effects.
Heres some info just for the heck of it. Do ECPs have side effects? The most common side effects reported by women following use of ECPs include nausea and vomiting. Breast tenderness, fatigue, irregular bleeding, abdominal pain, headaches, and dizziness may also occur. Side effects are far less common using progestin-only ECPs than combination hormone ECPs (Van Look & Stewart, 1998).
Does medication abortion have side effects?
The most common side effects reported by women following medication abortions are similar to those of a spontaneous miscarriage — abdominal pain, bleeding, and gastrointestinal distress (Creinin & Aubény, 1999).

I wasn't talking about the poster that got raped either. I was talking about someone who shared a story about the condom breaking in college, so she took the MAP and was sick for days.....to the point of losing conciousness. My point was that I would guess that anyone who is going to have to go through that would much rather use a condom as a safetynet the next time she wants to have sex. No matter how embarassing it might be to buy condoms.

Im not talking about grown adults who know all the different side effects....nor am I talking about people who are safe, and then their safety fails...
Im talking about young kids, who just find this easier...then telling their parents there having sex.....
Why is it difficult for the safe people to go to the dr????

When you go to the doctor, do they hand you the prescription or do they send you to a pharmacy?

I guess I'm not explaining what I'm trying to say clearly.
What you said you were afraid of was kids having unprotected sex because they thought they could just take a pill the next day and be done with it. And that this would become a habit for them. What I was trying to say is that if a young girl takes the MAP ONCE and spends the next two days in bed vomiting and sick, I doubt she'd rush to take it again. She would remember the pain she was in the first time, and probably opt for condoms, or something that wouldn't be as horrific.
Of course, if she has no symptoms, then there's a problem.
But, as others have pointed out, there are tons of OTC drugs that kids abuse on a daily basis!

When I worked at Pathmark the same kids would come in every night to buy cold medicine that you can take when you have high blood pressure. They get high from it.

Re: The Morning After Pill
One of the points that may have been missed and I apologize if I didn't see it in the thread.
Walmart is not your average corporation. It's power as a corporation in shaping the American culture and economy is enormous. There isn't a precedent for the tremendous amount of power Walmart has. I think this lawsuit really comes down to what Walmart can effectively do which would make this drug unavailable. I really think this is an example of trying to protect a minority group.

Re: The Morning After Pill
Ill share some things im not proud of....
I started having sex way too young! If I could turn back time I would!
Anyways.....the pressure to have unprotected sex was big....I never thought about std's....just feared getting pg.
I wouldnt dare tell my mom I was having sex, let alone ask to go to the Dr. to get "the pill"
My fears stopped me from doing certain things, had the MAP been otc.....I wouldnt of given it a 2nd thought!
What am trying to say...is alot girls prob feel this way, and will open themselves up to std's more than ever...

Why is it difficult for the safe people to go to the dr????
For a friend of mine who neede dit when the condom broke, her Dr was closed over a holiday weekend & she eventually talked a pharmacist into giving it to her without a prescrpition.
I guess she could have gone to planned parenthood, but she was so freaked out, she didn't look into that or assuemd they too would be closed.
But really that is not the isue here . In MA, it is LEGAL to sell it w/o a prescription. But it is at the pharmacist's descretion. Wall-Mart doesn't have to give it out without a prescrption. The issue is, weather or not they have to carry it, b/c all commonly prescribed medications must be carried, according to the law. The issue ( of the law suit) is weather it falls under the category of "commonly prescribed".

But it think this lawsuit is a JOKE....
WHY is it that Walmart soley responsible for stocking this? IMO i don't think ALL pharmacies should have to provide this kind of medication....

A few quick points to recap for you 1. Its questionable if its legal for them to refuse to sell in Mass 2. In some parts there is no place else to go. 3. It was (for the most part) a great debate thread.

I doubt that. It can't be too far because its a public service. Call 911... have an ambulance truck you to the nearest hospital.
As the wife of a paramedic and a firefighter, I really wish you wouldn't say that. My husband risks his life every day for deadbeats who use ambulances as taxi service.

1. i don't agree with the law
2. there are actually places in America that only have Walmart to go to? And if need by there is no doc? 3...i felt from what i saw that most of the debate was about the pill itself...but i only skimmed

Re: The Morning After Pill
Wow! The one thing I have learned from skimming through this thread is that America is far too concerned with what goes on in their neighbors bedrooms, what goes on when someone gets raped, what someone else may be buying at a pharmacy to take for whatever reason.
I think everyone should be concerned about themselves, their children and their own families....maybe if more Americans did this the country wouldn't be riddled with so many problems

i don't look at the morning after pill as birth control per say
i just don't...and to be honest i think it is dangerous to do so...
IMO that should be prescribed by a doctor... Just like you can't just go to a doc and get BC pills
Pills imo shouldn't be over the counter like that..
