Re: The Morning After Pill
Right, but it's being fought by people who can afford to fight it right now.
And it will most likely pave the way for some precedents about what pharmacies are allowed to decide on their own versus what's legally mandated.

Re: The Morning After Pill
Posted by Princessmaris however Im just not seeing how the MAP and reg BC are the same thing?????
on the paper that they give you with the BC pill prescription (the one i get, anyway), it states on the package that the pill "also serves as a morning after pill"

i think i'm more freightened by the dependancy that so many people have on this one store. for so many reasons, its scary.
I know! In middle America, it sounds like it's everything. see this is what bothers me....that this lawsuit isn't frompeople who depend on Wal-mart for this drug...
this lawsuit it to prove a point...
Personally, I am glad that its just to prove a point...rather have it prove a point in a place that has other options than to have this happen in a town that has no place else to go (in my best richard gere voice)

in many other parts of the country walmart is the neighborhood grocery store & pharmacy. It might not be like that in NY but it is like that in other parts of the country. So they really cant just go to a different store to get what they need in this case the MAP.
then go to a doctor!

I see what your saying.....but medically, if there the same thing (different reason... but from what you said before there chemically the same thing).....why not have reg BC out there as well..????
I dont see why walmart should have to carry ANYTHING they dont want too.... Some places dont carry certain things...the end!
As I said before..... I think I confuse the MAP and the "abortion" pill with eachother alot.... however Im just not seeing how the MAP and reg BC are the same thing?????
Someone said before, because there is no implantation....but how do you know????? How do you know that the day you swallow the pill, is not the day your zygote started forming????
Im not trying to be sarcastic... im just really confused!
It all depends on when you think "life" starts. The morning after pill can only be used up to 72 hours after intercourse. It takes an egg 6-12 days before it implants and starts producing HCG. The morning after pill, like BC, makes implantation not possible.
Does that help? If not, let me know and I will try to explain a different way.
Ok then..... this is not the same as BIRTH CONTROL pills at all.... If I believe (lets say) "life" begins as soon as the sperm and egg meet.... then the MAP is serving as an abortion pill....correct?

But doctors prescribe this pill and then the person has to go to the pharmacy to pick it up.
And they can't get it there. Back to square one.

or it will sink like a ship...
The terminology isn'thte bestin the law..
Or maybe it is my interpretation...
Can i go to any pharmacy...look for something a brand and sue them for not having it?
I still think that the MAP should require a prescription
And i think that pharmacies should be required to stock prescription drugs
NOT forced to sell every over the counter drug

you both make good points. But, i do think that their case does sound more valid because they DO have other options.
If it were in some random Bumblef*ck town, i think people might disregard it as "well, its their only option, so of course they're going to fight for it". also, not as many people would identify with the situation, as they would when they realize that they do have other options, But, those options could easily be taken away.

Not 100%. If you take hte pill soon enough you can take it befor the egg and sperm even meet. It takes quite a few hours for the sperm to get to the egg and then a few more hours before a sperm can capitulate and enter the egg at all.

But i guess it goes back to my belief that this drug should NOT be OTC...
But i see where you are going. It is ust hard not to get past my feelings about the drug itself

Me too. I think that's the whole point of this.
It's a prescription drug, Walmart is refusing to give it to people WITH a prescription and now the lawsuit.

Yeah... if they want to make this pill OTC... why not sell it any convienence corner store or market? Whats the difference?
I never knew calling the corner store the "bodega" was considered a racial term... especially since everyone I know says the same thing.

I think the concern is that Walmart is making a MORAL judgement and who are they to do that as a pharmacy?

True... but in many cases they may have already "met" and in even more cases if you waited til the last day....
BC pills may have the same chemical make up, however to me are totally different! I take a pill every day...preventing my body from being able to get preg.
Where as... Im on nothing...have sex....my egg meets Dh's sperm..and life (IMO) forms... I got take the MAP... and I am stopping/ending that life from continuing!
I know thats not what this thread was about....but they way it was made to sound was there is no way this is considered an abortion pill....when indeed, it can be considered one, judging by someones personal opinion....
"When life begins" is also a very controversia issue!!!!!!
Thanks Deb...for spelling things out for me
