BUT again...i don't htink a pharmacy should be made to sell EVERY and ALL OTC drugs...
I agree with you. That was my stance on it.
Its a corporate decision that affects all the WalMarts... not a decision made by some pharmacist to not dispense it because of his/her personal beliefs.

then go to a doctor!
Oh boy. Here we go again.
Red: Read the entire thread. This is exactly what I said (go to the hospital). It opened a HUGE can of worms and i got flamed to crap for it.
yes...buti see how that is kind irrelevant....
the drug has already been approved byt he F&DA to be over the counter...
BUT again...i don't htink a pharmacy should be made to sell EVERY and ALL OTC drugs...
In fact they don't...
I think the concern is that Walmart is making a MORAL judgement and who are they to do that as a pharmacy?
maybe.....but i think being an OTC pill they can do that... Again...i can't see how every pharmacy out there can stock everything under the sun... I think it is their perogative in this case.. If it prescribed....well they can't make that kind of judgement...

I see what your saying.....but medically, if there the same thing (different reason... but from what you said before there chemically the same thing).....why not have reg BC out there as well..????
I dont see why walmart should have to carry ANYTHING they dont want too.... Some places dont carry certain things...the end!
As I said before..... I think I confuse the MAP and the "abortion" pill with eachother alot.... however Im just not seeing how the MAP and reg BC are the same thing?????
Someone said before, because there is no implantation....but how do you know????? How do you know that the day you swallow the pill, is not the day your zygote started forming????
Im not trying to be sarcastic... im just really confused!
It all depends on when you think "life" starts. The morning after pill can only be used up to 72 hours after intercourse. It takes an egg 6-12 days before it implants and starts producing HCG. The morning after pill, like BC, makes implantation not possible.
Does that help? If not, let me know and I will try to explain a different way.
Ok then..... this is not the same as BIRTH CONTROL pills at all.... If I believe (lets say) "life" begins as soon as the sperm and egg meet.... then the MAP is serving as an abortion pill....correct?
Not 100%. If you take hte pill soon enough you can take it befor the egg and sperm even meet. It takes quite a few hours for the sperm to get to the egg and then a few more hours before a sperm can capitulate and enter the egg at all.
True... but in many cases they may have already "met" and in even more cases if you waited til the last day....
BC pills may have the same chemical make up, however to me are totally different! I take a pill every day...preventing my body from being able to get preg.
Where as... Im on nothing...have sex....my egg meets Dh's sperm..and life (IMO) forms... I got take the MAP... and I am stopping/ending that life from continuing!
I know thats not what this thread was about....but they way it was made to sound was there is no way this is considered an abortion pill....when indeed, it can be considered one, judging by someones personal opinion....
"When life begins" is also a very controversia issue!!!!!!
Thanks Deb...for spelling things out for me
Whne taking BCP its still possible for the sperm to meet the egg, unlikely, but still possible: "The Pill also works by thickening the mucus around the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to enter the uterus and reach any eggs that may have been released. The hormones in the Pill can also sometimes affect the lining of the uterus, making it difficult for an egg to attach to the wall of the uterus. "

If it prescribed....well they can't make that kind of judgement...
Part two of this is that yes they can...I believe there is a bylaw tats states a pharmicist doesnt have to dispense any medication that compromises his or her morales.
Its sooo grey...everything about this is grey.

Yes thats it.
From what I read here... its considered perscription... but it can be given out by a pharmacist without a perscription which makes it OTC.
So its not like it will be sitting next to the boxes of tylenol on the shelves. You have to ask for it.

I know some places do not give MAP even when it is prescibed, which has been a major concern for some women. I just think it is a shame that it is hard for these women to get and that Walmart has made the decision not to sell it. They sell guns but not this?

See this is a major problem.... bigger than the Walmart issue.
Any pharmacist that will not dispense any medication thats perscribed should lose their license.

Yes but I swallowed that pill before that happened....
Where as, I know I am or could be preg. then making a conscious decison to end that life.... by taking that pill...(again JMO)
I guess its just principle...

Re: The Morning After Pill
but, even with the "go to the doctor" comments that people have made. ... i DO understand what you're saying (and obviously, putting the who "Dr's dont fill prescriptions" thing aside....
have you ever NOT had insurance?? Do you know how much a Dr's visit's cost is? People in Agony put off going to the Dr for as long as possible b/c they cant afford it- some thing like this is much more time sensitive, and long lasting. I think its idealistic to think that its just that easy.
granted, a situation like this doesnt afect just One group of people, BUT, many of those who feel that that pill is their only option may feel that way because they CAN'T provide for a child. So then wouldnt that mean that taking that option away from them could lead to a higher rate of people on welfar and public assistance? Then when more money is being taken out of YOUR paycheck, are you going to think, "well, its still better for me to pay towards that, then to have them take an Approved OTC drug that i dont think should be OTC"?

One of the points that may have been missed and I apologize if I didn't see it in the thread.
Walmart is not your average corporation. It's power as a corporation in shaping the American culture and economy is enormous. There isn't a precedent for the tremendous amount of power Walmart has. I think this lawsuit really comes down to what Walmart can effectively do which would make this drug unavailable. I really think this is an example of trying to protect a minority group.
This is exactly my thought and you articulated it much better than I could have.
This could be a landmark case for reproductive rights, and if you read the article, I believe it says that the women are backed by Planned Parenthood and other women's groups. They are challenging the refusal of pharmacists to provide this drug when it is prescribed.

Red, this is exactly what me and Deb are going back and forth about....
Chemically made up of the same things.... HOWEVER depending on what your opionion is on "when life begins" can be viewed as an abortion pill as well!

I have not read through this entire thread, so excuse me if I repeat info, but I have read that you can use regular bc pills in place of a map. You just need to take three days worth at one time. Just what I read, doesn't mean it's true.

This is why I mentioned the hospital earlier.
Aren't hospitals required to treat any patient that doesn't have insurance as long as its considered that the person is "sick". Wouldn't requesting a MAP fall under this category?
Isn't part of the taxes I pay take care of this hospital service?
