Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)

Once Peanut goes to bed I need to sit here and read this whole thing LOL.. DS just started solids, and there's no way I'm paying that much for it each time, thus I am going to try to make it all myself....once he finishes what he has now. Do you think it would be OK if I put the extras in the freezer in the little baby jars rather then in ice trays? Would that be OK? Just curious if I need to go and pick up more stuff or not LOL

Sweet Potatoes - How may yield how many servings. If I bake 3 potatoes - what should that give me?

I think I steamed 4 or 5 sweet potatoes and I got 4 trays. Sooo 28oz I think? Just my tip, if you peel them then steam, you will probably get more than scooping after you bake them.

avacados? do you do anything special?

i'm not sure but it seemed to me DS hated the texture at first, I mashed avacados with fork, he kind of gagged on it. Didn't want to open for another bite.

But I try to give him some peaches, his favorite, he took that no problem, so I mixed a little peaches into avacado and he ate that. But I wonder if the peaches just helped the texture.

any idea?

I tried avocados at 4 months. He hated it no matter what I mixed it with. He still hated it at 5 months. He's 6.5 months now, I'll try again soon.

with avocado, I actually used the babea to make a puree. DS loved it.

For some reason, I couldn't get it mashed enough with just a spoon directly out of the fruit itself.

In the beginning, I mashed the avocados with a little formula to get a better texture. I've also mixed it with pureed mango.

ok so i've been trying to intoduce myself to the idea of making babyfood. I've been reading some of these posts and have a silly question.. I see you talk about all these gadgets to use for steaming and pureeing, Can't we just use the steamfresh bags (plain veggies of course, not the ones with sauces) and then just stick it in a blender?

I have used them and they work great!

My baby food making days are done, so I have 5 of these freezer trays (40 containers total) - anyone want to buy them? BPA free, 4 oz containers, dishwasher safe.

bumping with a question-

do you recommend thinning the purees before you freeze or after it thaws?

It is best to thin after. They can get a little watery when you defrost them. I add a little bit to get it to purée. Then I thin as I heat it up from being frozen.

For those moms looking to save some money (which I am sure we all are!) when I first started making the baby food I bought the food trays at BBB or BRU for 9.99 for 2 trays of 8 two oz cubes each. I quickly realized that if I wanted to make a large batch of food to store in the freezer I would need quite a few trays. AND, my DD quickly advanced from eating 2 oz portions to 6-8 oz's. So that being said, I then purchased the glad storage containers which come in 4 oz size and have great tight lids. They will run you about $2.50 give or take (and you can use coupons if you have them for the supermarket) for 8 containers!!!

Does anyone use ice cube trays or BBB food trays then pop the frozen food into zip lock bags? If so, does it save room in your freezer?

This is what I do and then I label everything and throw it in the freezer. I feel like I can fit that in a tight spot rather than a tray

Homemade Mum Mums - anyone?

I tried the recipe using rice flour on wholesomebabyfood.com ... it was a no go, they were gross and hard, like dog biscuits.

Anyone have easier recipes, that worked for them?
