Anyone have any ideas on how to make green beans yummier?
DS is a great eater but he does not want to eat his green beans. He will tolerate them if given to him with carrots but barely. I made some this weekend and added a bit of apple to subtly change the taste but he still doesn't really want them. I'm tired of so much squash and sweet potatoes.
Also, has anyone made broccoli? How'd you make it?
Thanks!
About Broccoli For dinner: sautee garlic and broccoli in olive oil for a few min. add low sodium chicken broth, bring to a boil, add chicken (or turkey), cook until meat is cooked through, then add 1/4 cup of pastina, cook another few min. Rough puree in the food processor. Freezes beautifully. DD really loves this!
For lunch: Steam broccoli and puree, then add either mashed sweet potato or mashed white potato. With white potatoes I sometimes add cheese.

If you gave chicken what cut did you get? Like chicken cutlets? Or Split chicken breast? Does it matter??
Thanks
Cutlets are definitely easier to cook with, but I've read that bone-in dark meat contains more iron. I usually roast a mixture of legs and thighs and pull it right off the bone to use whenever I need

I started DD on meats at 6 months to make sure she got extra iron. She is a huge fan of chicken and lately curried beef with peas and carrots
I had a question about meats as well. For some reason when I blend beef with veggies and broth the meat still stays a bit gritty. I can't figure out how to make it smoother. I haven't had a problem with my hand blender, so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong?
I pureed some chicken breast for DS this weekend and I didn't think it looked bad at all. I read on wholesome baby food that you should puree/blend the chicken/meat cold to avoid grittiness. I chopped up the chicken in 1 inch cubes, boiled it, let it cool and then placed it in the fridge until later that day so it got cold, then pureed it; no grittiness. He's having it tomorrow so we'll see if he likes it.
Just wanted to update: the chicken was still gritty. DS hated it!!! He eats everything and he was refusing my chicken. Going to try making a "soup" to see if this helps.
Any other moms have luck with chicken?

I used the chicken cutlets. I baked them with apples (but disposed of the apples after cooking) I cooled the chicken in the fridge then puryed and added sweet potatoes. The first time I used one piece of chicken the second time two pieces. Two pieces was way too much and they didn't like it.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
One more thing, actually two.
#1: My DS is still on purees. He loves eating and I know he is ready for chunkier foods. How do I make his food more chunky (he has only 2 teeth)? I tried making apples and also pears chunkier and what happened was that it became mush with some chunks in it. DS just swallowed everything vs gumming it, like he didn't realize or expect there to be any chunks.
#2: Can pastina be frozen? I freeze DS' food (mostly only cook weekends bc work FT) so that he can have it during the week.
Thanks

Oooo Would you mind posting the curried beef recipe? When did you start giving DD this meal? Could I make it with chicken or turkey?
I don't plan on pureeing the meats. Pureeing meats sounds icky to me just saying it lol. The chicken my mom made she boiled and shredded. Xavier hasn't had a problem eating the shredded chicken. I'm going to roast, use the crock pot or boil. I'll shred the meat and freeze it that way with a little of its broth. Once defrosted I mix with veggies.
Good idea about using the crockpot! I totally forgot about that!
You can easily substitute chicken or turkey for beef in the recipe below. I used ground meat, but you can really use any type of meat as long as you cook it through. I plan on making another batch with chicken today actually.
Ingredients: Extra virgin olive oil 1/2 lb ground beef (I used 90% lean) 1/4 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/4 tsp ground turmeric 10 oz bag of frozen, organic peas and carrots
Directions: 1. Set heat to medium and add a turn of olive oil to pan.
2. Add meat and mix in all spices.
3. Once meat is browned or cooked through, add the bag of frozen peas and carrots.
4. Cover pan with lid and continue to cook until peas and carrots become soft. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
I then blended this with some water to make a puree for DD.
Next time I'm going to use chicken and also add some chopped onion and garlic to the oil. The curry flavor is really mild and it's a big hit with DD! Enjoy!
ETA: I started giving mild curries to her at 7 months.
Thanks so much for posting the recipe. Did you introduce spices individually first and wait the 3-4 days as you do with food or no?

Thanks! Here are my questions:
I've been on the site wholesomefood.com, but I still have a few quick questions:
1) What serving size is right for a 5 month old?
2) Has anyone froze pears? I know you can, jsut wondering if they defrost ok - how long do they last in the fridge?
General/Helpful Hints 3) What do you buy in large quantity, chop and store for easy use in the fridge?
4) What frozen veggies do you buy that work as good if not better than fresh?
5) Are baby carrot ok or do you buy only the large regular ones?
TIA! We're just starting, I'm excited, but also nervous, I really want to do this for DS.

1. When DS was 5 months he was having 2 cubes 3 times a day.
2. I've done pears. They defrost a little watery so I add a little cereal.
3. I buy everything in bulk, do large batches and freeze them. They are good for 1-2 months. Costco is a girl's BFF. lol
4. I do everything fresh with the exception of green beans and peas. I use frozen. I cook stovetop according to the package. Strain them into cold water to stop the cooking process. They I add them to the blender with a little filtered water to puree.
5. I use organic regular carrots but I dont see why baby carrots wouldnt work.

ok so i've been trying to intoduce myself to the idea of making babyfood. I've been reading some of these posts and have a silly question.. I see you talk about all these gadgets to use for steaming and pureeing, Can't we just use the steamfresh bags (plain veggies of course, not the ones with sauces) and then just stick it in a blender?

Yes but they may not be soft enough.

4) I am finding organic really affordable frozen, so I stock up when its on sale. I like frozen better, I feel its more nutritious as its picked when ripe and immediately frozen, where as fresh is picked when almost ripe and ripens in the store or in a crate while being shipped from whereever.
5) I use baby carrots because they come pre-cleaned I'm lazy. steam them, puree with a little bit of fresh water.
I like to mix a little pureed apples with everything, DS handles the texture of apples better than anything else.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Can we talk about finger foods? I'm giving Xavier more textured foods and adding the skins to the purees I'm making. I want to transition him into finger foods and start to give him less of the purees. Did you make the fruit or veggies daily and how did you dice or cut them up for DC? I have the Vidalia Chopper which I use a lot to dice up stuff for DH and I. I was thinking of using that. Or the food processor? Never used it so wouldn't even know where to begin... Can this stage of foods be frozen so I can make bigger batches instead of daily meals and if so, how did you freeze?
I LOVE making Xavier's food, but this stage has definitely got me puzzled. This is why I have been avoiding it a little even though my mother keeps telling me Xavier is definitely ready move ahead to big boy food.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Ok so I'm about to make my first venture into the baby food making world! I just bought a bunch of stuff at the supermarket. I think I have the whole making and freezing bit down. But, once you want to use it, is the microwave ok? I feel like the microwave is such a no-no for babies! Is it ok once you start food though? Or could they be defrosted in a bottle warmer? TIA!
ETA another question- someone just gave us Long Island plums- apparently she says they are supposed to be GREAT for baby food. I can't find anything anywhere about whether plums are Stage 1 or not. Is there like a master chart anywhere that lists what foods are what stages?

I think plums are stage 2
I use microwave to defrost bc its literally 20 seconds. Or i take out in the AM and but in the fridge and by time dinner comes, its defrosted. Or if im really ahead of th game, i take it out the night before

2 tablespoons as per ped recommendations, but he said to add it to cereal. I don't add it to cereal, I give it straight up. Cereal gives us all kinds of tummy issues.

Can prunes be frozen? I read on whoelsomebabyfood it won't freeze intoa solid block, but can I still freeze them?
If not, how long will they stay in the fridge?

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
avacados? do you do anything special?
i'm not sure but it seemed to me DS hated the texture at first, I mashed avacados with fork, he kind of gagged on it. Didn't want to open for another bite.
But I try to give him some peaches, his favorite, he took that no problem, so I mixed a little peaches into avacado and he ate that. But I wonder if the peaches just helped the texture.
any idea?
