Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Of course Xavier loved the sweet potatoes yesterday :) Our little boy eats like a piggy and is becoming a porker.
I tried steaming the SPs first. It actually wasn't as bad as I thought. It was a little hard to cut but I got the hang of it by the time I made my second batch.
Now that DS is eating 2 types of veggies, if I add it to his cereal how much should I add? Do I add less formula to the cereal or keep it the same? If I don't add I'll probably give him the carrots in the am and the SPs in the pm.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
What does everyone use to freeze in?
This is what I used with DS and I don't have enough for the twins, so I was about to buy some more, but wanted to get some more opinions/options.
They are $4.99 on Amazon and buy 3 get 1 free.
My problem with them is I do not know how many oz's they are? And they seem SMALL.
The girls already eat more then my son ever did. I admit they have been on Jarred food since they started eating about 6 weeks or so ago as I had no time to make the food.
They normally eat at least a 4oz stage 2 jar twice a day. So I need 16 oz's of fruit/veggie a day. If these cubes are 1 oz...god I'm in trouble with how much time this is gonna take to make stuff!
SO I was thinking just jumping right to the silicone mini muffin pans someone mentioned. But again, how do I figure out oz's? I hate to Buy first, I don't want to spend too much $$ on this.
Anyone with Twins making their own food? It is just seeming overwhelmeing this time around and I am already buying some things that I wont make myself. I buy organic jarred, but I always gave my son only hoemmade.
Anyway, TIA

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
One more Question...
I NEED to get a new Processor..
Issues really are TIME and safety. Last night all I made was some Peaches and some Pears and it took an hour and made about 3 days worth of food .
My Food processor only holds 2.5 cups.
Can anyone reccomend one that is larger?
And second...What about a Steamer? Does anyone have one?
I woudl buy this addtionally b/c right now I use two large pots and two steamer baskets ..BUT I have to stand right on top of them bc of my 2 yr old and I forget sometimes the timing...etc...
I like the idea of a steamer I can turn on and leave ont he counter, even at the added expensive for safety and convienence sakes.
I looked into the Beaba babycooker, but it is just too small for my needs.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
***For moms worried about freezer burn (i posted about this too) - I found an answer on wholesomebabyfoods.com
Do my homemade baby food cubes have Freezer Burn? My Cubes are Frosty and Have Ice Crystals:
Don't be alarmed if you see ice crystals forming on your baby food cubes. As mentioned earlier, this is NOT freezer burn rather it is the excess liquid used to make the puree that rises and freezes at the top of the cubes. These crystals or frost are not dangerous and will not make your baby food cubes inedible or harmful.
HTH!

SO I was thinking just jumping right to the silicone mini muffin pans someone mentioned. But again, how do I figure out oz's? I hate to Buy first, I don't want to spend too much $$ on this.
The ones I got were Wilton brand, red silicon, from Bed Bath and Beyond.
I did some measuring today and here's what I came up with...
Recycled Stage 1 jar = 5 tablespoons = 2.5 ounces (ETA: filled to the bend in the top of jar.)
Recycled Stage 2 jar = 8 tablespoons = 4 ounces (ETA: filled to the bend in the top of jar.)
Mini muffin = 2 tablespoons = 1 ounce
Cupcake = 8 tablespoons = 4 ounces
1 tablespoon = 1/2 ounce
The ice cube trays I was using were 1 tablespoon a cube so the muffins are a much better option for me. I will go right to mini muffins with future DC.
I steamed and pureed 5 red pears today, added 2 tablespoons of baby cereal and got 12 mini muffins, 6 cupcakes and 1 stage 2 jar (for breakfast tomorrow). I use the minis for mixing, like pears and peas.
Here's a pic of the pears and some peas I did yesterday... Image Attachment(s):

How do you guys make your blueberries?
I never did berries with DD until she was able to just eat them whole. So I'm clueless!

I usually do them mixed with bananas so they are not all liquid like.

Some books i read said to simmer them for a few minutes then puree them up...i'm just wondering how, or if, you cook them or do you just puree them up cold?

I usually by the frozen ones and put them in the microwave for a few minutes and then puree them with bananas or other cereal to thicken it up.

My pears seem to brown so quickly - does anyone else have this problem? By the time I puree them and put them in the cubes to freeze them they are turning brown already? Any tips?
Am I the only one this happens too?

I use a recipe from a book I have. Not sure of the measurements (and now I just wing it with what I have) but it's blueberries, cut up strawberries and a ripe pear peeled, cored and chopped. Put that all in a saucepan, no water, and cook on medium high heat for about 5 minutes. You'll see the juices start to come out of the berries. Then I puree that all together and it makes a lovely purple! Then in the whole batch, mix in two tablespoons of baby cereal. Can be frozen. DS loves it. I'm making a batch tomorrow.

It may be too tart for him. Try mixing it with some cereal or his favorite fruit. Or chicken, if you've done that yet.
DS has actually only had a fresh peach that I was eating once. Just bought some frozen to try.

I simmered them for a few with a little water and then pureed them. Not sure if you really need the water

Do you girls take the skin off the peaches & pears??
Yes...
but in the cookbook that I got from Williams and Sonoma it says to cook the pears with the skins on as it helps contain the nutrients.
I tried Plum Organics baby food for the first time today...the pear mango combo (because I HATE peeling mangos) and it is DELICIOUS!!!
where did you get the plum organic baby food from? any brand? I hate making prunes and she loves it

I'm trying rice cereal next week (adding a new food weekly) so I'll switch between oatmeal and rice hopefully... if DS doesn't have constipation issues.

The brand is "Plum Organics" and I bought them from Diapers.com, but I know BRU sells it as well.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
so i swore I would never buy meat in a jar, but DD wouldn't eat my chicken I made (to be honest it tasted gross!). I think it was a texture thing as well.
Anyways, looking for ideas on how to get her to eat homemade chicken.
She ate a jar of apples with chicken from gerber because I needed to get it in her. She loved it. to me it tasted all like apples.
Any advice is appreciated!!!

The chicken Nolan eats is a recipe from my Annabel Karmel (sp?) book. I'm not sure if I've posted the recipe before but after the first time, I switch it up a little each time...
In a tbsp of olive oil, sautee white part of a leek or 1/2 cup sweet onion until soft/transparent. Add 1/4 pound cubed chicken breast and cook until browned. Add 1 sweet potato peeled and cubed and a cup of no salt chicken or vegetable stock (made my own, it's hard to find in the store). Bring to boil and then simmer for about 20 minutes, until sweet potato is tender. Add 1 cup frozen peas and cook another 5-10 minutes. Puree (with all liquid) to desired texture, adding 6 peeled grapes at this time (I've added a couple apple cubes as peeling grapes is a biotch!).
When he does not seem in the mood for it, I mix it half and half or 2 chicken to 1 apple sauce.
Hope she likes it!
