I have no desr to breast feed.... In fact it actually creeps me out to see others breastfeed. It's just something I am very uncomfortable with. I don't think I will have any regrets

I love that you just wrote this. It's so politically incorrect to say, but I feel so uncomfortable when women BF in front of me. I can't say anything ofcourse because then there is something wrong with me. That being said, I actually would like to try BFing. But, watching others- no thanks.

There is nothing wrong with formula and you are entitled to your feelings, which are very much a product of our society, but it makes me really sad to read stuff like this. BF is simply a baby eating the way nature intended and our society has made it so stigmatized. Meanwhile, nobody bats an eye at the scantily clad VS models in ads all over who show way more skin and are all about sexualization and marketing.

Re: Those NOT Breastfeeding

To answer the original question, I am straight formula feeding.

Don't feel sad!! There are other "natural acts" that I do that I have no problem with, yet I don't want to watch others doing it. Ya know what I mean. Chat Icon Frankly, almost everyone I know in real life have the same opinion. And, most people I know barely BF either. Their babies are no different than BF babies. Also, I don't like seeing scantily clad women either! I deal with it cause I have no choice.

I can't help it. It's a baby eating! Formula is fine, and BF is not the right choice for everyone, but our society's attitude toward BF is just very depressing.

Since it was brought up, I 100% agree with you...I actually felt a little badly reading this thread that so many feel this way. They're entitled to how they feel, but I felt like you reading it...and I struggled like CRAZY BFing...ended up pumping and used formula. I did the best I could at the time but in hindsight I wish I tried harder. It's the best for baby, next time I'm going in MUCH more prepared. Thanks for sharing, ITA.

ummmmmmmm

did i miss something. bullyChat Icon

one broad out of 9834823048 made a comment about bm being better. that's it. not that she's a pos for not bf.

the op got exactly what she needed and wanted. TONS OF SUPPORT!!!

I just felt the comment made wasn't very supportive or accurate and I pointed it out. I don't think it was bullying.

NOT looking to start drama here, but I'm sure it will be viewed as drama...but her statement was 100% accurate. BM IS what is best for baby's health. Even the formula companies admit this - hence why they print it on their packaging. It may not be what is best for many people (and that is why formula is a GREAT alternative) but it is a fact and not an opinion that BM is best for babies.

Thank you Chat Icon

I don't know, I feel perfectly comfortable sitting in a friends house while they breastfeed. That doesn't bother me one bit. But if I'm out at a restaurant and a friend or non friend puts a cover on and breastfeeds the baby, it makes me uncomfortable. We go into private areas to go to the bathroom, wash up and change our clothes, why is it appropriate to breastfeed at the table in public? Now, I will add that I don't say anything about it...but it makes me personally uncomfortable. I'm sorry if this makes you sad.

I don't think THIS is what makes her sad. What makes her sad is that if some people CHOOSE to BF in public and OTHERS give them a disgusted look--because people do that. THAT is what is sad...you are free to do whatever you want with no judgement. But those who to BF in public should be able to do so without having to feel badly about it...and what she said is that it's sad that no one bats an eye at scantily clad models but if someone publicly BF, some people give them dirty looks. I happen to agree with these sentiments.

No one feels sad that you feel uncomfortable about it, you have to right to do what feels good for you!

I don't know because going to the bathroom and feeding a baby aren't the same thing??? Would you go to the bathroom to feed your baby a bottle?

I don't mean to start drama, AT ALL, but it's just not the same thing. I feel like it's every mom's choice on how they should feed their child, but let's not imply that a breastfeeding mom should go to the bathroom to feed their child when the implication isn't there for a formula feeding mom.

I just don't personally like it....I do however feel that places should have an area for mom's to go to feed their babies other than a bathroom. I wouldn't want to take my baby to the bathroom to feed them....I really can't explain what 'm trying to say....I know if there is a place to take your baby where it is quiet and private, than why not, but if not then feed away!!

People can't help how they feel, nor should they be ashamed either. There is nothing wrong with a woman who is uncomfortable watching other women BF. It is not about society or whatever. People have different comfort levels. Plain and simple.

I guess? But let's be honest if I said (JUST AN EXAMPLE) I had a problem with two gay men kissing or with a bi racial couple (WHICH I DON'T, JUST WANT TO BE EXTRA CLEAR, I DON'T) wouldn't you try to change my opinion or tell me that it's wrong to feel that way?

How is it different for me to say that when someone says they are uncomfortable or it's gross(etc) with the way I feed my child, especially since, that's the purpose of our breasts making milk.

I think that's the problem, most places don't. Even working women who are supposed to have places to pump have a hard time getting what is their right. I personally don't have a problem with someone BFing in public but if it makes you uncomfortable, don't look.

You aren't at all. I guess my point was just that it's not fair all the time. I never felt comfortable feeding my baby at the table, but that's just me, I hate that some women who are comfortable doing it, get judged?

Exactly. Thank you. Chat Icon

You aren't at all. I guess my point was just that it's not fair all the time. I never felt comfortable feeding my baby at the table, but that's just me, I hate that some women who are comfortable doing it, get judged?

I hate when anyone is judged for anything...but unfortunately it happens. People judge me for skating while pregnant....That is my decision and if I felt uncomfortable with it I wouldn't do it. So as for you you didn't breast feed at the table because it made you uncomfortable.... no one should be judged for any decisions they make

Re: Those NOT Breastfeeding

Never tried BF. Went straight to formula. Never looked back and feel no guilt.

I had said if my girls were super early and underweight I'd attempt BF while they were in the nicu but they were good gestation and weights.

To clarify, I think BF/FF is a parents choice just like any other parenting decision. I think its silly to judge as long as the child is being raised in a loving environment and its needs are being met.

That said, what saddens me is the way our society/culture views BF and the fact that because of that, many view BF as disgusting, compare it more to using the restroom than to formula feeding, and think it should be hidden away, etc. It is a baby eating, it has wonderful benefits, and it doesnt hurt anyone. It may not be for everyone, but I wish our society was more supportive. Just my opinion.

Re: Those NOT Breastfeeding

When I had my DS 3 years ago, I tried to BF. He had trouble latching, I had trouble producing - it was a mess. I pumped for 6 weeks and my supply was really low. I was in tears daily and I wound up supplementing. My bottom line was I do not want my child to go hungry, and I want to be a happy mommy for him. This time around, I plan on going straight to formula. I do feel a little guilty but my bottom line is - my body does not really succeed at BFing and I want my children to be nourished, so that is what I will do.

I just think its really sad and ridiculous that grown women are "creeped out" by breastfeeding.

Creeped out??

That's what we were designed to do.

Why is it ridiculous? It's a feeling...aren't we taught that everyone is entitled to their own feelings. I personally am not creeped out by breastfeeding, I just don't think it's always appropriate in public....

Re: Those NOT Breastfeeding

Creepy is a strong word...I find a random man at a playground creepy...a scary movie with spiders creepy...maybe it makes you uncomfortable but I don't think it's "creepy".

I do agree however that if you are going to do it in public you should at least try to be discreet about it.

Re: Those NOT Breastfeeding

Well this has taken a turn.

The original question was asking if anyone who plans on FFing going to BF at all in the beginning.

The comment about the language on formula... from a marketing perspective it would seem odd. Why remind women there is something they can give their baby that is "free" and "better." Also I would think it would be a constant upsetting reminder to those who really wanted to BF and couldn't by no choice of their own. 'Hey I really wanted to BF but couldn't and now every time I prep this bottle I get a reminder, fantastic!' Maybe they're obligated by law, the FDA, I don't know. I think she was making more of an observation that it was on there...

Do I personally like seeing boobs in public? Not particularly, beach boobs, BFing boobs, boobs on billboards, I'd just rather not see them... just like I don't want to see a guy's unmentionables in public... but who cares? That's my issue. If you want to BF in public and are comfortable with it, god bless you. Some people aren't comfortable with it and that's fine too. Ignore the critics and people who are giving you "looks" and go about your business.

Let's not read into people's word selection too much. We all know this is a touchy subject. I don't think the poster who said "creepy" chose the right word to express what she meant. I doubt she's getting chills down her spine at the thought of seeing someone breastfeed. I think she meant it more along the lines of being uncomfortable. If I say "I don't like watching another woman BF" that is not the same thing as saying "BFing is gross." To think that is reading WAY too much into it.

Why can't we just be respectful of other people's personal preferences and answer a question without the drama...
