what did your ped say about waking newborns?

Now that mine have passed their due date and the ped is happy with their most recent weight gain, he said we can let them sleep as long as they want at night. However I'm not sure if we should be letting them sleep during the day as well or continue to wake them every 3 hours. They are breastfed if it matters. I'm going to clarify tomorrow when they reopen, just wondering what others' peds say.

i was always told that during the day, give them a bottle every 3 to 4 hours. It helps keep them hydrate and hopefully help them to sleep longer at night

Re: what did your ped say about waking newborns?

I started letting DD sleep as long as she wants to and it really helped her overall sleep patterns. But now I don't think I'll let her go more than 4 hours during the day. She napped all morning 6am-12pm and was awke for the afternoon with regular naps. Then she fell asleep last night at 4:30p woke at 10:30pm and every 4 hours after that. She was STTN so nicely up until then. I only let her go those stretches because I fell asleep too!

Once DD started gaining I did not wake her. She bf every 2-3 hours during the day but occasionally she would take a 4+ hour nap. They are growing and going through so much that if she was that tired I didn't want to wake her. It never effected her sleeping at night either. Some days she was just sleepy.

ETA- Keep in mind that it's about how may times they nurse in a day more than how often. As long as you're getting in the minimum amount of feeding, then it doesn't really matter how long they go between two feedings. I think it was at least 8 times a day with newborns.

Exactly this - now that you have gotten the ok from their PDF to go overnight without feeding, you want to make sure they are eating enough during the day to fill them up.

Re: what did your ped say about waking newborns?

I will tell you what ped said and then I will tell you what I did. At first they said to feed every 3 hours until she regained her birth weight. Once she regained her birth weight they said to let her go at night and still do every 3 hours during the day

I did none of the above. DD was sleepy and I let her go during the day and night. She regained slowly but surely and dr. was never concerned about her weight. I may have not told her that I wasnt waking DD though - woops! Only issue for me was I got engorged and got mastitis, ughhh!!! But I never knew how long she was going to sleep so I never wanted to pump. Oh well you live and learn!

Re: what did your ped say about waking newborns?

I'd continue every 3/4 and wake them in the day to promote sttn. I would always wake one when the other wanted to eat to keep them on the same schedule. I never woke at night and eventually they both started skipping the first overnight feeding at about 7 weeks. I thought something was wrong the first time lol.

ETA, I find that now that they only get 7 bottles per day they are finishing them more consistantly. they used to leave .5-1 oz at random feedings now they rarely leave anything. Im slowly adding .25 oz if they finish it.

i never ever wake a sleeping baby. ever. and my DD sleeps amazing now but has slept great since 8m. prior to that she STTN often, just not always consistently (one month yes, next month no...etc). as long as they dont have their days and nights mixed up i see no reason to wake them ever.

of course i was majorly scarred when i brought her home from the NICU at 4-10 and they made me wake her every 3 hours around the clock. i was soooo happy once the PED said we could stop that. it was awful.

My ped said to wake him every 3 to 4 hours to feed. My DS loves to sleep and takes multiple naps per day I never ever wake him to eat except for his last bottle before bed if he doesn't wake himself

what did your ped say about waking newborns?

My ped said to let him sleep at night, and during the day, no longer than 3-4hrs in order to establish a better nighttime pattern. My lactation consultant said to feed every 1.5-2hrs, so I don't know who to trust. =\

This was our exact situation. I decided to listen to the lc because I wanted to Ebf. Although, i was successful with ebf and had a wonderful supply, and ds has always been in 90% for weight and height, we suffered with no sleep. DS sleeping habits were awful until about 5-6 months. Next time around, instead of waking dc every 2 hrs to nurse, even at night, I'll probably do 3-4 hrs.

Re: what did your ped say about waking newborns?

ds was 9lbs 10 oz at birth so weight gain was never an issue.. i followed my gut and did not wake him unless I needed to do something at a certain time or wanted to relieve some engorgement or wanted to make the longest sleep stretch a different time.

Me too. If they cry earlier than 3 hours I listen to the LC lol.

So DD slept over 5 hours last night and I kept staring at her worried that she was going to starve!! Lucky me to have such a problem!!!!
