Why is everyone not freaking out?
This is from a health magazine:
"A study conducted in 2012 showed that Ebola was able to travel between pigs and monkeys that were in separate cages and were never placed in direct contact. Though the method of transmission in the study was not officially determined, one of the scientists involved, Dr. Gary Kobinger, from the National Microbiology Laboratory at the Public Health Agency of Canada, told BBC News that he believed that the infection was spread through large droplets that were suspended in the air.
“What we suspect is happening is large droplets; they can stay in the air, but not long; they don’t go far,” he explained. “But they can be absorbed in the airway, and this is how the infection starts, and this is what we think, because we saw a lot of evidence in the lungs of the non-human primates that the virus got in that way.”
So this is technically "not airborne" but yet it's spreading through air.

Did anyone see the pics of the 2 cops who inspected the infected doctors apartment and then threw their gloves and masks in the public trash can. Tell me that's not irresponsible?

I'm way more concerned over ISIS or enterovirus (which a girl in smithtown was just diagnosed). It's only a matter of time before ISIS has a big attack on our soil. In the last few days alone a Canadian soldier was shot and killed and a cop hit with a hatchet....all by Muslim radicals. To me,that is so much for a reality in my world than catching Ebola.
I agree....That crazy guy who took an ax to a cop in Queens is way scarier to me.

Remember how like three weeks ago ALL anyone was talking about was enterovirus and every person was freaking out? My FB newsfeed was blowing up with information as was every news report.
And then...........BOOM!...........some case of Ebola pops up and now everyone is in a panic that they are somehow going to contract it, regardless of how slim the possibility, and nobody is even mentioning enterovirus anymore.
My point? The media drives hysteria. Some people are losing their minds. And to be honest, why? What does it gain you? It's completely 100% out of your control and the reality is, you probably have a higher likelihood of being struck dead by lightening than you do of contracting Ebola.
I would bet money in another few weeks, you won't hear mention of Ebola in the news like we are hearing now. The media will have latched on to some other thing to panic the nation about unnecessarily and that will be that. That's always how it goes.
But in the meantime..........practice good hygiene, eat well, try and stay healthy, and go live your life. It's all you CAN do. Stressing, freaking out, and being panicked will only serve to drive you insane.........it won't change anything.
Yeah, I agree the media shapes public opinion and fears, but sometimes there is a real threat and just because the media is reporting it, doesn't mean that people are over reacting. The facts themselves are highly concerning IMO. There is a case of a deadly virus with no cure in NYC and they admittedly don't know everything there is to know about it... ? Such a crowded, populated city. So close to here. I am concerned regardless of what the media says.
What real threat is there? There has been what??..........3 or 4 cases in a country of MILLIONS of people. What kind of threat is that? If thousands were being diagnosed I *might* start to worry but we're NOT at that point yet..........and I don't think we ever will be.
There is NOT going to be some out of control epidemic of Ebola spreading through a nation such as ours.............we don't live in mud huts in some underdeveloped nation with dirty water, junk medical care, and no hygiene.
The way the media is reporting on this is shameful. They are the SOLE reason people are in a panic and then you add to that the ridiculous amount of doomsday people who are spreading misinformation trying to rile everyone up...........it's a recipe for mass hysteria.
The reality is, 99.999999% of us will be unaffected and life will continue on as normal and in a few weeks this crazy panic will subside. JMO.

And if you think about it--- who has been infected? Doctors who are working directly with patients. A man who came here from West Africa after handling a woman who had it. Nurses who had been working directly with a very very sick patient. Nobody else. What about that nurse in Texas? Her boyfriend was quarantined for being in DIRECT contact with her too. Has he come down with it yet?

I am not worried about catching it - but, I'm annoyed that this Dr who was "self monitoring" was out and about.
After the Dallas media frenzy you would think he would know better! If he just stayed in and took it easy for three weeks there wouldn't be as much hysteria right now.

Bottom line- yes, this Doctor is a complete and utter asshole for not quarantining himself after returning from caring for Ebola patients. Complete asshole and I almost feel like he should face some kind of charges. And yes, not sure how he was allowed back into the general population at all. Is there no oversight on this, especially now with all the media coverage. That to me is hard to comprehend.
This is exactly what I am trying to say! It's not so much I am specifically concerned abt myself contracting Ebola. But it should be a general concern bc. He isn't the only selfish idiot. The nurse that flew with a temp (I don't care what the cdc told you), the nbc doctor who snuck out to get soup at a restaurant...
And yes I am concerned about Isis and just like I am enraged mandatory 21 day quarantines aren't enforced and air travel from Africa is not banned or limited I am also enraged that all of our borders are wide wide open for Isis to be welcomed right on in. That attack yesterday was horrible.
And no I am barely concerned about the flu or Enterovirus. Just as much as I am concerned about an ear infection or Strep throat or a broken leg. I've never had the flu and Enterovirus is mostly a common cold. Both of which if I did get I would very likely survive. If I got Ebola it would be a different story.

What is freaking out going to do? I can't stop my life or keep my son from school, quarantine ourselves in the house. I'll keep monitoring the news but other than that there isnt much I can do.
Seriously why freak out over something you have absolutely no control over. Makes zero sense to me. Now that doesn't mean I'm not going to try to protect myself and my children. I will take preventative measures of course. But I'm really not going to let fear control my life.
ITA! What else can I do? Freaking out is NOT going to help me or make me any safer. I ride the subway every single day. I'm pregnant. I worry about the flu as it is but I'm doing what I can to keep my self protected from that. How can I protect myself from Ebola? All I can do is be aware. Be smart. Make sure I'm paying attention to who is around me. Keep my hands clean. Not touch my face unless my hands are clean. If I see someone that appears to be sick, get up and change train cars. But I would be doing that anyway. What more can I, myself do?

Here we go again... you can't get it from a patient with a fever. That has been proven already by patient zero and the nurse. Fatigue? What didn't cause fatigue? What's a fever to you? Sometimes I feel hot but I'm fine. Other times I feel find but I'm feverish.
He will be fine.
There are several articles and videos and links that prove banning flights does nothing.
This paranoia is caused by the media.
One insistence doesn't prove you can't get it from someone with a fever. His family likely knew he was infected and stayed away. All information that is out there states you CAN get it from someone with a fever as they are showing symptoms.
One instance?
Ok lets see how many people touched Duncan with a fever? The nurses the people around him. He traveled he touched surfaces.
Nurse #1. She too saw other patients walked around touched things was around people, her dog!
Nurse #2 OMG got on a plane with a fever. She touched TONS of stuff, she got measured for a wedding dress (which the shop had to CLOSE thanks to paranoia and that dress shop's SON has been treated like a carrier since then)
Not one SINGLE CASE of Ebola has been traced back to being exposed to a patient with ONLY a fever. Not ONE.
Give me one instance where the ONLY exposure to Ebola was a patient with fever than THEN turned into a case and perhaps I can will concede the point. But not one single instance at all.

Holy crap, the guy worked in an ebola treatment center, and didn't have the wherewithal to quarantine himself for 21 days after he got back!! IDIOT!!! I can't even understand this AT ALL.
News Conference on Ch 4 right now
It floors me how our government refuses to mandatory quarantine these at risk people yet if this turns into a pandemic they will instantly put mandatory quarantines on all of us and it will be horrific.
Just curious if you are watching the nyc and nys health dept commissioners. They are saying over and over again how diificult it would be to catch EVD even from the subway!! I guess people are not even feeling trust towards these docs and what they are saying.
The EPA and Christie Todd Whitman said the air at ground zero was safe to breath. We are human and make mistakes.I have zero faith in the CDC , especially since they have handled things the past few weeks.
Exactly. I don't need to watch or listen to what they say because not only do I not believe them I don't believe even they know!
So if someone is sitting there with Ebola and not showing any symptoms at 10pm. But at 10:01 they start to feel achy. And at 11pm slight chills. And 12am a low fever and by 6am a full blown fever can anyone tell me with 100p absolutely certainty that this person became contagious at 10:01pm but at 9:30 they weren't contagious? It's just a switch that is flipped at that exact second?
Right....no one knows! Now they said the guy has been fatigued since Tuesday. How is fatigue not a "symptom"?
Because we get fatigued from many things.....I'm fatigued after a long week of work. Anyone traveling multiple time zones gets fatigued.
If fatigued was the first symptom millions of people would be running to the hospital saying they had Ebola because of the panic.
If you JUST came from West Africa and were working with ebola patients, and you have fatigue....entirely different than someone like you or I who is feeling fatigued.

Why is everyone not freaking out?
I see very few people "freaking out", the OP's post seemed to be in jest to me. I see people annoyed that a doctor who was actively working with ebola patients was allowed to be out and about before 21 days was up. If you have absolutely no concern, so be it, move along and stop reading the ebola threads ;) I'm not *scared*, just annoyed that there is a lack of common sense amongst these people traveling from ebola ridden countries, and there is no monitoring of them.

For the record, I have a good friend that also did Doctors Without Borders a few months ago in West Africa. He came back and is fine--it's been about 2 months.
The doctor that is infected isn't the only person that came into the country from that area in the last week or month. Tons of people are coming in and out of the country that AREN'T infected. We only hear about the one that is infected and we freak out.

4 NYC cops were attacked by an ax wielding psycho yesterday in Queens. (actually 2 were hurt, the other 2 shot the asshole dead. ) And they think he may be a lone wolf from ISIS. Anyone freaking out over that? That, to me, is way scarier than Ebola. And yet, I still go on.
that was actually my first thought this morning. Too many people are seriously too freaked out over Ebola. There are a million other things in the world that to me are a lot more concerning.

Re: Why is everyone not freaking out?
When are people going to whip themselves up into such a frenzy over drunk, distracted, and reckless driving?
That's something we can control through regulation and it's so rampant that it really is waiting to kill us every time we leave the house.
We really stick our heads in the sand as often as we overreact.
That's the real threat in NY.

Plus, I'm too worried about all the deranged in the head people on a mission for ISIS.

But does it show these officers enter the building or have any contact with Spencer?
If they were on the street the entire time and never touched him then its no more contaminated than anything else on the street.
