Holy crap, the guy worked in an ebola treatment center, and didn't have the wherewithal to quarantine himself for 21 days after he got back!! IDIOT!!! I can't even understand this AT ALL.
News Conference on Ch 4 right now
Im wondering why he didnt. There has to be a (medical) reason. I think because he didnt have a fever. He monitored it 2x a day. But once he had one he reported it.

It floors me how our government refuses to mandatory quarantine these at risk people yet if this turns into a pandemic they will instantly put mandatory quarantines on all of us and it will be horrific.

Just curious if you are watching the nyc and nys health dept commissioners. They are saying over and over again how diificult it would be to catch EVD even from the subway!! I guess people are not even feeling trust towards these docs and what they are saying.

Why is everyone not freaking out?
Well, it was just said that he had close contact with his girlfriend. I'm taking that to mean they had sexual relations. It will be interesting to see if she contracts it through either his saliva or semen from BEFORE he developed the fever at 10am this morning (doubting they had sexual relations this morning...although you never know). If that happens, then it proves they are contagious prior to the fever.

True. And they said one of his 3 contacts were also in bellevue. Im guessing it was her.

They did say the contacts would not be tested unless they displayed symptoms, so we'll see!

So much for the "self quarantining" they kept saying he was doing. Sexual relations, taking 3 subway trains, a uber car, going to a restaurant and a bowling alley isn't a self quarantine to me.

I think they backtracked and said self-isolation. He prob kept 3 feet away except for fiance of course.

The EPA and Christie Todd Whitman said the air at ground zero was safe to breath. We are human and make mistakes.I have zero faith in the CDC , especially since they have handled things the past few weeks.

Re: Why is everyone not freaking out?
None of this makes sense to me.
They say Ebola is SOOOOO hard to get, and yet all these people who were wearing full protective gear ARE getting it. No sense.
It's OK to go out for food and bowling and wherever else you want to go as long as you don't have a fever because its NOT contagious then, and yet, the people the Ebola patients had contact with before the fever have to be quarantined. No sense.
Since all this happened I have not seen one ounce of preventative measures being taken by our government, nor do I believe the incompetent CDC has any clue about this disease.
Am I freaking out and going into hiding? No. But to say that the chances are slim to none that someone will get it is an outright lie. Everyone knows someone who is a health care worker, first responder, etc. who could possibly be exposed and in turn, expose you.

I'm not going to lie - I wasn't worried until an hour ago and found out he was positive.
Bowling? Walking the high line?
The govt can't stop flights bc they just can't - but tracking passports and mandatory quarantines - why can't we do that?!,?

This is not good. I am really worried. I also don't trust what the officials are saying about how not contagious it supposedly is. They clearly want to keep the public calm. I really hope his girlfriend doesn't get it. If she does, it's going to get really ugly imo.

If the dr. felt sluggish, and you came from West Africa, why on earth would you go out bowling? Foolish!!!
And for those who feel this doesn't affect them or their family, that's great and I appreciate chuckle. But while you keep shrugging it off, please say silent prayer for those who work as first responders, or who has family members who work as police, emt, firefighters, physicians, nurses, pa's, techs, aides.. please do, there are quite a few of us who will not be resting easy.
100% on point
I will say it again since some people don't realize it but all those first responders and health care workers and doctors go home to their families and their families go to work and school with you and your kids. So I am sorry but no one is exempt from this. This isn't an exclusive disease to those on the front lines only.
You hit the nail on the head!

Exactly. I don't need to watch or listen to what they say because not only do I not believe them I don't believe even they know!
So if someone is sitting there with Ebola and not showing any symptoms at 10pm. But at 10:01 they start to feel achy. And at 11pm slight chills. And 12am a low fever and by 6am a full blown fever can anyone tell me with 100p absolutely certainty that this person became contagious at 10:01pm but at 9:30 they weren't contagious? It's just a switch that is flipped at that exact second?

Re: Why is everyone not freaking out?
I am confused. Aren't there epidemiologists and policy makers who have studied their whole lives for crises like this? Why is virtually nothing being done?
I would have like to have thought we had a plan for something like this.

Re: Why is everyone not freaking out?
It was utterly and completely irresponsible for the doctor to be out and about after coming from Guinea, having treated full blown Ebola patients. They stated he wasn't even feeling that well yesterday. Why was he on the subway, bowling alley, restaurant, etc?!? This is a doctor with first hand experience of how deadly this virus is. He should be ashamed of himself.

This is not true. You can make sure you have at least 3 months of food and water stores. A first aid kit, Tylenol and antibiotics, extra blankets and batteries for flashlights and a battery powered radio. All of this we should have regardless since we all know about Irene and sandy. So you can prepare your homes. Some people choose to arm their families as well.
Eta - also to specifically protect yourself from Ebola it can't hurt to try your best to keep yourself healthy. Proper nutrition and sleep as well as various immune system boosters.

I also want to point out, the American camera man that was working in West Africa who contracted the disease, has NO idea how he got it. He didn't come into contact with any bodily fluids of someone that had ebola he had said.

I just caught the end of a conversation but from what I just heard they said of course he had the virus the whole time but the chances of anyone getting it is so minimal. And they were using the example as Duncan's family not even getting and healthcare workers are def. at more likely and easier to get it cause they are dealing with the patients when they are very sick. Nothing in life is 100% you just have to choose how your going to live your life. If you chose to worry and be concerned then that's fine. If you choose not too that's fine also.
