You had to know the church's stance on these types of issues before you sent your child there, so I'm not sure why you were so surprised at their beliefs. Obviously not an appropriate venue for such a discussion, but not a skocker that they feel that way.

I wouldn't expect a secular daycare to be sending that message, but yours IS a church daycare- to expect them to conform to your beliefs if they go against the church's (whether they are right or wrong here) is unreasonable.

I'd send your child somewhere else if you are uncomfortable with it.

It's not that I didn't know their stance on this, I just didn't expect that topic to be discussed. I don't think it's an appropriate conversation no matter what type of daycare it is.

Is it just this teacher?

This is the first time that I've had this type of conversation with anyone at the school. I'm sure that most of the staff shares that belief and that's okay as long as they don't teach it to my daughter. I really do like her teacher too. She's very caring and I can tell that DD likes being there. Now that it's a day later I just don't know how to bring up the topic to her without insulting her. I don't want to offend her and have her take it out on DD. KWIM?

I just don't see this being a school topic to be discussed, even in catholic school. . .no? Chat Icon

I was going to ask the same thing! How did this even come up?

I don't even know! One of the kids was in the hospital and I asked about him and the teacher told me that he was doing better and that she kept praying for him. She then started telling me how I should pray for him and then she went into how she would tell other people to pray when she first came to this country. I guess one person who she told to pray told her that he was gay and she didn't know what that meant. That's when she went into Saddam and Gamora, etc, etc. It was a really long conversation.

Re: WWYD? Daycare and religion

I would take my child out of that daycare.

Same reason why I wouldn't put my child in a Catholic school until I felt they were really old enough to form their own opinions about these things and realize that not EVERYTHING a priest tells you is law .....KWIM?

I am Catholic and I believe in certain things - but I am not religous at all - I would NOT in a million years want my child in that type of environment.

What I'm not getting is this - was this a conversation between just you and the teacher? Or was she telling you AND the kids this?

Because, as mentioned, it's a christian daycare, those are the beliefs they have, so I wouldn't be surprised she was expressing those beliefs to a parent that sends their child there, knowing that it's a christian environment.

That said, I would NEVER want this to be taught to my daycare-age child (actually any age, but I would never expect for this to even come up at that age), so if she was telling the kids this, I would absolutely find another school.

If this is not part of their curriculum at this age, then I would leave my child there because, quite frankly, those are her views and there's no guarantee that the daycare teacher at a secular daycare won't have the same views, KWIM? So long as they were not teaching those views to my child, then unfortunately you have to accept that not everyone believes what you believe.

I guess im the minority here, but that is the belief of christians-although I would not expect to have that discussion nor do I agree with it, i would not say its so crazy to hear a true christian saying that. I would have known that going into it. Again I dont agree but I really dont care about her opinion anyway. This was an adult discussion correct? She wasnt telling the kids this right? Just want to be sure i have the story correct...with all that said if you arent comfortable, pull her out!

I'm with you - so long as it was an adult convo, I'm not shocked. I personally do NOT agree with her view, but I wouldn't be shocked that a teacher at a christian daycare has that view and mentioned it to a parent.

I just would not be ok with it if they were teaching DC that at a young age. At an older age, I could use it as an opportunity to teach my child about people having different beliefs, but I would not want this ingrained in my young child before they could really understand that not everyone believes the same thing.

Re: WWYD? Daycare and religion

I don't have a problem with their beliefs since this is a religious school.

However, I do have a problem with them talking about this specific topic to children. IMO it is not okay to talk about sexuality at such a young age-whether you are straight or gay.

If they were focusing on Jesus, love, grace, etc fine-that's within the confines of the "curriculum" for an infant/toddler in a religious program and if you had a problem with it I would say you need to switch. But how this specific topic could be a part of the curriculum I just don't understand.

ETA: I missread. If these comments were directed at you and not a topic of discussion for the kids, then I see less of a problem with it as you as a adult can filter.
