AND THEN you want to have "THE BEST" teachers in the world????

Good luck with that.... I can only imagine the candidate pool....

I'm seriously afraid for the future of this country....

$60,000 for a teacher, $60,000 for a fire fighter, but let's make sure our bankers are taking home six figures... and then let's argue that their salaries aren't paid with tax dollars....

..

there are a TON of (geat teachers) that don't have a job that would JUMP on a 60K a year job in a heartbeat.

I don't believe this.

You may find some, but you wouldn't be able to staff all of LI with excellent teachers who are paying that much in student loans....

But then again, that's JMHO

I believe it. My BIL & SIL are both teachers and cannot get a job anywhere. They had to move in with my SIL's mother because they were broke. I think they'd jump at the chance for a 60,000 a year salary.

Yes. And then after years working they like every working man, woman, and child in world would want a raise

Sorry but this thread is just ludicrous............speaking as a teacher and a person. What's the point of this thread? The general consensus on this board is that teachers are overpaid and useless and to start a thread asking anyone on here what we should make is so beyond pointless and unproductive.

I could careless what anyone thinks I should make as a teacher the same way I'm sure everyone else could careless what I think of their salaries in other professions. How about we start a thread for every profession and job out here and then we can get everyone riled up and have everyone go back and forth for 40 pages justifying how hard they work, how much education they have had, and how deserving they are of the salary they get.

It's not for anyone to say how deserving someone is of the salary they make and to comment on a system or a job you're not even a part of it just idiotic. I'm not going to try and claim to know how hard a lawyer works and how much he should be paid based on the cases he takes and the hours he works. How can I? I know nothing about it. To comment on a teachers salary, education, or job function when you're not even a teacher yourself is so beyond useless. I don't care what anyone thinks of my profession. You do your job, I'll do mine and everyone can just worry about themselves.

The general consensus is not that at all. The few who have posted ( and it really is a few of the same people over and over again) are of the opinion that educators and the education system will have to accept some financial changes just as those in the private sector have done for the past several years. I have yet to read one single post that said educators are "useless". Exaggeration and dramatics are not going to make your case.

I know you just wrote you were done and "could careless". I, myself, could not care less.

Oh, yes- I completely agree. They, along with most teachers, are absolutely deserving. (I'm not one of the ones who believes teachers shouldn't make a decent salaryChat Icon )

ETA: I was just agreeing with the fact that I know a few unemployed teachers that WOULD jump at 60 grand a year.

I have a few friends who are teachers and make less than 40g a year. they have been teaching for a few years. they had to work in catholic schools because teaching jobs are hard to come by; especially the ones with DOE in public schools.

I have other teacher friends who CANNOT get a job in the field at all... and even the sub jobs are hard to get. I have another sub friend where her days have been slowing down drastically.

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

Speaking as an NC public school teacher...

Teachers in NY have it good. I'm not saying that their job isn't just as difficult as any other teacher in the country. But NY teachers (LI public school teachers, anyway) get lots of concessions and job perks that the rest of the country's teachers do not receive.

I didn't know this when I moved to NC 4 years ago.

I got a job teaching 5th grade at one of the best public elementary schools in the area. Yes, I knew the salary would be much lower than I would have been making in NY, but I also know that the taxes here are dirt cheap, and our cost of living is much lower.

Here's what I didn't know:

1. No Union. This is a "Right To Work" state. That means they can require teachers to do pretty much whatever we are told to do, and we can't do anything about it.

2. Terrible raises. I'm on my 3rd year of teaching here, I have a Masters Degree, and I've been making $42,000 since my first year here. No wait, I take that back...I'll be receiving an extra $800 in my paycheck this year for working in a Title I school. Chat Icon

3. No pension. None. All I get is what I pay in myself. No matching.

4. No lunch break. My lunch is 20 minutes long, and I eat at the table WITH my kids. I also take them out for recess.

5. Meet the Teacher on Sunday. Yes, you heard correctly. For the last 2 years, I've had to give up the last Sunday afternoon before school starts in order to meet my kids.

I've said this millions of times before, but it definitely bears repeating...no one, and I mean NO ONE who has never been involved in the daily running of a classroom will EVER, EVER understand what it is to be a teacher.

Yes, I have summers off.

I also have panic attacks, courtesy of my job.

Yes, I work from 7:10 am - 2:30 pm.

I also have no energy left for MY children by the time I finally roll myself through the door around 5pm.

I say to anyone who feels that teachers are undeserving of a FAIR salary: Come spend a day with me. See what this job is. And maybe, just maybe, you'll see why I sometimes fantasize about going to work f/t at Starbucks, as much as I love teaching and love my kids.

If public school teachers work so hard and deserve so much money for molding young minds, how do you account for the low salaries and extremely high graduation to 4 year college rate that happens at Chaminade, St. Anthony's and other private schools?

If you fail two subjects and don't go to summer school, you get kicked out, so of course everyone graduates! I went to Catholic school.

So what happens in public school if you fail a subject & still fail it in summer school? Do you get left back or you did your time so you just continue to the next grade? I'm serious..I never went to public school.

BTW: Chaminade & St Anthony's, both very competitive, wonderful schools..passing is 75% & you are not allowed to have any failures carried over to the next yr. Two failures you are automatically kicked out & 1 you can make-up in summer school. If you can't hack it, you don't belong.

Nope. You get promoted. The administration bends to parents' demands and doesn't want to look bad to the community.

I've had kids who fail and then their parents even refuse to let the kids come to summer school. Guess what? Next year, they are in the next grade.

As of last year, my district doesn't even have summer school. Social promotion at its best.

Not in HS! There have been many students in my district who have not graduated, and I have even had 19 year old 9th graders!

For starters, in general, I think NYC teachers should be paid more than LI teachers.

I also think it should depend on what you teach. I do not think an elementary school gym teacher or an art teacher should make anywhere near what an AP chemistry or calculus teacher makes. (Does teacher salary vary by what subject they teach? I don't know the answer to that.)

As always, jmo!

WHAT?! Oh my goodness...as an elementary music teacher I guess you think what I do is far less important than what a chemistry teacher does? This makes me so angry I can't even type something to this. I don't know you, so I will try not to judge but I guess a well rounded education is not important to you. Perhaps you think that we are just babysitters in the elementary special area departments? Super sad. I wonder if you have children and how THEY feel when they are in their special area classes.

1.The work a special area teacher has to do can SOMETIMES be different , but it is surely no less.
2. In other countries that are surpassing us in things like math and science programs such as music and physical education are not near forgotten.

I could go on and on and Chat Icon . I just wish people who have no clue could spend a day with me and see the real story, many would be so scared of my job they would go running back to the AP Physics classroom so fast their feet would not touch the floor.

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

As much as I agree that teachers deserve to be paid very well, I find it somewhat off-putting that people keep listing out all the things that they do and how it's going above and beyond.

I think the reason that teachers deserve high salaries and good benefits is that they are educating the next generation, and we should be rewarding that in order to attract people to these professions. WAY more people from top schools go into banking than teaching, because money makes the world go round, and people are afraid of not having enough. That to me is really sad, and it's one of the reasons that our education system is struggling so much (not to say that there aren't great teachers, because there obviously ARE, but it would be great to attract even more).

So back to my original point, I feel like by constantly reiterating how teachers go above and beyond you're (and the you I'm referring to is any teacher that has made a point like this on one of these threads) actually fueling the fire of the opposition. People in the private sector are dealing with things that aren't in their job description, working nights and weekends, taking their work (both practically and emotionally) home with them, worrying about work, being judged by superiors and clients, no pension, no 401K matching, expensive health benefits, constant fear of losing their job. None of this sets you (again, you plural) apart from anyone else, so I don't see how it adds to your argument.

I do understand that you feel as if you need to defend yourself against people who are questioning. I just feel listing all your hardships isn't proving the point. Talk about the fact that you transform kids' lives...that they come in one person and leave another. That you inspire kids to become what they eventually become. You DESERVE your pay. Not because of the stuff I listed above, but because your work matters and it's critical to the future of our society.

You want teacher to pay for BA plus 2 master's and then make less than $60,000????

I have to say, I think the arguments of what the salary is should be based on the quality/quantity of work, not the required education. I teach college classes, and Assistant Professors (which all require doctorates) start at $45,000. In 10 years it's up to about $65-70. And they're all living on LI/in NYC and making it work and not living in a box (granted, most are two-income families).

Pretty much every administrative position in a college requires a doctorate. It's a given these days that every professional position pretty much requires a bachelor's degree, and most a master's. It's just not that unusual, so I don't see that it should be held up as an argument.

I also teach college courses....

BTW - I'm an AMAZING teacher Chat Icon !

Chat Icon Adjunts don't really count--if I were you I'd teach summer school to make more $$$ than you probably do teaching college courses!

At some colleges yes, but community college pays double what other colleges pay - and TWICE what summer school in my district pays.

Sorry but, I actually do not think teachers should make as much as bankers etc. Take the salaries and divide them by the hours worked and I think you will see that the teachers on the average are making out better than the bankers sometimes Chat Icon Also, teachers have a lot of perks - tenure, pensions and, the situation is amazing for new moms - jobs held for them to return even for a 2 year period! Who else gets that! i am not a teacher but, my family is loaded with them and they all agree that they have it pretty good!

If you could all the hours we spend planning, grading etc.... it doesn't equal that much per hour.

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

Can I add that it also costs me a lot of money to work??
I am not talking about commuting, clothes, medical (from lots of germs)
I am talking supplies and more that are not provided to me?
Every year I spend a lot more than $2000 and we are given $130ish (use to be more) to buy items we need
Supplies that my students parents do not send in
Photocopies (I get 135 copies a week from work, with say 25 kids that is about 5 sheets copied a week) i spend a lot of time and money at staples
Prizes to promote good behavior
Workbooks (for activities and to make hw copies from)
Binders, folders, paper - plain, construction
Gifts (for christmas and other holidays, end of the yr)
Apples for fall math/holiday projects
3 pumpkins to count seeds etc
Bulletin board paper and boarders
Teaching manipulatives, name tags
Books to read aloud
It goes on and on and on

Oh and I often put in money for students to go on trips bc parents cannot afford it and it breaks my heart for them not to go

I think AT LEAST 80...it takes a lot of continuing education to be a teacher and for those that ask what a kindergarten teacher needs, I will tell you..kindergarten is NOT what it used to be!

Kids are expected to be reading by the end of K and that takes extensive knowledge on the part of the teacher on strategies to teach reading to varied levels of exposure and experience...same with math..we are not just cutting, pasting and singing all day! Add on top of that trying to be developmentally appropriate in an age where no one knows what that means anymore plus taking care of K students emotional well being (it is true what they say..your K teacher can make or break your attitude towards school) and K teachers need just as much schooling as any other teacher!

Chat Icon
I have been teaching kindergarten for 16 years in a public school on LI. I started teaching Special Ed kinder and then gave up my tenure and senority to teach regular ed full day k. I love it and love that age group.

Teaching K is entirely different than teaching grades 1-5. You are on your feet all day- no sittling unless reading a story. We are now basically first grade but still have to deal with taking care of the each child's development as a 4 and 5 year old- socially, emotionally etc. Kindergarten now has it's own certification because of this. You think that since the concepts taught in kinder are so easy and general that teaching k is easy- well it's one of the hardest grades to teach. They added additional classes you must take in order to teach k- on child development. Less new teachers in college are opting to become certified in k because of this. Some of my collegues have come down from 2nd and 1st grade to teach k and agree that k is tough. I'm not looking to sound like a marter for being a k teacher but just wanted to clear things up from an earlier poster who said we shouldn't get paid the same since it's easy to teach k.

I wasn't being dramatic or trying to "make a case". I wish simply making the point that this thread is ridiculous, which it is.

And PLENTY of teachers had made PLENTY of sacrifices over the years just so they can keep their jobs. My BFF who has been teaching on the island for the past 15 years has accepted salary freezes and more just so she and everyone else in the building can keep their job. And districts will be happy to make cuts to save money but when they do I'm sure you'll be the first one up at the building whining because YOUR child has no extra curricular activities, or an overcrowded classroom, or not enough attention. But then I guess you'll just have to realize and accept that financial change in the system.

So again, if you're not a teacher in the system you don't know EXACTLY what is going on so it's NOT for you to comment on what someone makes or "deserves" to make.. Worry about your own job, pay your taxes, and deal and if you don't like it.............move! I pay the SAME taxes as you and you know what, it is what it is. Living on LI is EXPENSIVE. Period.

I know you just wrote you were done and "could careless". I, myself, could not care less.

yikes... i noticed that too... how embarrassing Chat Icon

Sorry oh great LIF grammar police who never have made a spelling or grammatical mistake. I could not CARE LESS. Is that better now? Does it somehow shed more clarity on what I was saying? Good god, people can be SO petty on these boards. Chat Icon

AND THEN you want to have "THE BEST" teachers in the world????

Good luck with that.... I can only imagine the candidate pool....

I'm seriously afraid for the future of this country....

$60,000 for a teacher, $60,000 for a fire fighter, but let's make sure our bankers are taking home six figures... and then let's argue that their salaries aren't paid with tax dollars....

..

Now, you see, this is not cool...

First of all, most "bankers" don't make 6 figures, and if they do it's because of commission, not base salary.

Second of all, bankers have degrees, and student loans, and mortgages.

Don't hate. Chat Icon

Re: If you could suggest a salary for a teacher...

I haven't read all the posts, but I will say this, that I agree that, in this Country, teachers are undervalued. I really simply cannot think of a more important job when it comes to shaping the future and prosperity of this Country. What many seem to forget is that a failing school means a failing future generation, which impacts each and every one of us.

I ALWAYS overpay our babysitters because, personally, I think the person who watches my children and invests their time in making sure they turn into good, productive citizens, is a hell of a lot more important than basically anyone else who touches our lives.

My proposed formula:

Picture the person you'd want to be the "average" teacher of your child. Picture his/her education level, grades, how hard he/she works, dedication. Realistically--whatever that is.

How much will it take to get that person to be enticed by education as a major and to go into teaching? Realistically?

Figure out where that person currently goes--finance world? Retail? Teaching?

And calculate the differential.

That's what the market sustains--that's what we should pay.
