Grill even suggested using ANOTHER mother's milk. Now I know this went on back in the day....I understand and know about the wet nurse thing. But for me. IMO, for me...I think that's INSANITY to be so obsessed with breastfeeding that in THIS day and age someone who COULD use formula would choose another mother's milk. 4. Formula
So, please Goobster...please. I am not spouting my opinion here. I am emphatically stating what is known to be true and what is recommended from the medical community that helps to guide all of our choices. Again...you want to FF, I truly don't care and don't judge. Just own that it is sub-optimal food for your offspring. This "Baby Friendly" Initiative is making Newborn Nutrition more a matter of public health than individual choice. And in that context (and others), BFing is the more conscientious method.
So you think formula is suboptimal. I most certainly don't, and again, I CHOSE to use it. But what I do think is using another woman's milk (when formula exists and gives a baby perfectly good nutrition) is insane, risky, unnecessary and obssessive in regards to the benefits of using BM.
We can agree to disagree I guess.

That honestly hurts to hear. My babies were born 6 weeks early and in the NICU. I was determined to EBF but my supply in the first few weeks was not enough to meet both babies' demands. I was given the option of donor milk from the NICU. It's not like I chose some random person off Craigslist or something. The milk is tested and safe. I was able to use that until my supply increased enough. Honestly though my babies did end up getting maybe 4 bottles total each of formula once they were no longer eligible for the donor milk and I cried and agonized over it becauae it was not what I wanted.
I think its rude to make comments like that. You're basically doing what you're upset about Grill doing and making harsh, hurtful generalizations that are insulting mothers who are trying to do what they feel is best for their children.
I am sorry if that hurts you to hear. That is not my intention at all.
I guess you felt strongly about BFing and so that is the choice you made. For me, as I said previously, I would never make that choice. I don't feel convinced enough about the benefits to BF< let alone use another person's BM, when formula exists and is perfectly good nutrition for babies. If formula did not exist, well then, that would be a different story.
Sorry again, certainly not meaning to hurt you. Just stating my thoughts in reply to Grill's posts.

I swear I feel like threads like this is why we can NEVER win.
I don't like the fact the FF mom's will have to basically chase down a nurse to get formula, but I don't think the initiative is sol bad (from what I've read on here).
Anyway, as long as I won't be denied nutrition for my baby they can do whatever they want.
FTR: I Formula fed because I am on a med that is expressed in BM and that I didn't want my baby exposed to any longer than necessary. I had been willing to try BF'ing with my first, but I wasn't devastated that I didn't really have the option. If the nurses continued to shove it down my throat knowing that I COULDN'T- I would've been pissed.
Edt because I went back and read and see the point of the initiative is to educate- not to save money. Oops

I would think with this inititative, the nurses would know which patients have medical reasons and they would not hound them. I am confident in that, but I guess there are always some idiots out there, in every profession. Time will tell I guess when this initiative comes into play.

The only thing "insane" about this whole thread is the people on BOTH sides making mothers on the opposite side feel inadequate for their choices. Worry about your own kid and move on.

Why do people insist on internalizing everything so much? Why is this even a debate? Nobody's kid is starving here ......
No one really cares what anyone else did or didn't do - they only care about themselves .........pointing a finger or judging someone else's choices is just a way of rationalizing and confirming your own ........
I don't get why people get so heated and defensive and offended about this stuff ........do you REALLY think that anyone REALLY cares about what you fed your kid? They care what they fed THEIR kid - and they are obviously going to justify their choices, b/c like any mother THEY THINK THEY MADE THE BEST CHOICE -
When there is a choice to make there is always a 'better' in your mind, hopefully, every mother would make what they think is the better choice ........ So, I don't worry about what the breastfeeding mother thinks of my forumla feeding - I already KNOW that she thinks she made a better choice than me. If she thought I made the better choice, she'd be an idiot for spending all of that time and energy breastfeeding when she could have a glass of wine instead !!

Pumping in a closet or your car or some obscure locked room at work while your 6, 8, 12, week old is home without his or her mother is a joyous way to spend the first couple of months of your baby's life.
This is absolutely correct...and why a lot of women STOP breastfeeding. It's extremely difficult for the first 6-8 weeks and then we're thrust back into the workforce to awkwardly pump in random places. It's just horrible. Why isn't more time and effort spent on this?????

There is a bigger issue at hand:
Women, return to work after 6 weeks with no pay. Leave your newborns with god knows who for how many hours a week.
Women, breastfeed only because it's what is best. Formula is a no no. Sure be up all night, you can still function at work when you go back at 6 weeks.
Women, work until the day you give birth because You should. You are a hero.
Women, don't have c sections have V births because it's better for everyone. Push for 5 hours, you can do it!
Women, society says you should work FT to contribute to household, you wouldnt want to put too much pressure on your dh. It's NOT ok if you look old and tired though.
Women, you must have a spotless house, create amazing meals, make sure your dh and children are happy and taken care of. You are last priority of course.
There are SO many demands placed upon women, and what do we do? Argue about ridiculous things with eachother. Women do this to themselves. My dh has never talked about how we fed our babies, no one cares ultimately.
How will women get anywhere in this world when they can't support each other? It's sad and it seems like some moms in these posts feel so desperate to prove that what they chose is best.

I don't think anyone with a newborn needs a lesson on what " mothering" entails! How sad is it that women will attack each other over this issue instead of supporting personal choice. If Bloomberg wants us all to breastfeed, he needs to support everything that breastfeeding mothers need.... Longer maternity leave, rooms set aside for nursing mothers ( my NYC school expects me to pump in a bathroom stall sitting on the toilet). It seems that the media is putting such an emphasis on judging women over their choice to BF or FF. If there is one thing I learned in the short time I've been a mother, is that you don't judge other mothers!
I have to say, I just love this post.

What really gets me is that I was a c-section and did not give my DD formula for the first3 days I was in the hospital - tried doing the straight breast feeding. She ended up getting jaundice. Hospitals have stricter budgets now. Bloomberg is so wrong but when you have money ... you have power.

What hospitals should do is making mandatory for nurses to ask new mothers whether or not they're going to breastfeed their baby. A lot of hospitals don't ask and just give the baby formula. I didn't have the same experience.. I was asked as soon as I gave birth. But taking away a woman's right to choose how she wants to feed her child is complete BS. It discredits us as people, and says that we can not longer make our own decisions. I get that he's not Taking the formula away.. but What the eff is "HIDING" it??? WE ARE ADULTS, AND WE CAN MAKE OUR OWN DECISIONS, AND BLOOMBERG NEEDS TO GO AND F HIMSELF!!! THIS GETS ME SO ANGRY!!!

Another thing ... by forcing this upon women, hospitals have to stock less formula therefore spending less. Winthrop in Mineola used to send women home with a few starter bottles of formula when I had my son 2.5 years ago. Last week when I checked out of Winthrop the nurse told me they are not doing that anymore. Maybe Bloomberg should grow a pair of tits and birth a child.

See I don't think the hosptials have to or should send you home with anything! If the formula companies want to give out samples they can have you fill out something and send them to your house. I did not get anything from my hospital (but then again they didn't want to give me any when I was a patient).

At WInthrop last year, they told me that they don't give out formula b/c of liability... as an attorney, I fully understand that. It's not just being cheap; they gave me a small pack of diapers and enough nipple cream, pads, and throw-away underwear for a year.

McDonalds has decided how fat you are. you didn't. they did. b/c they know enough about our psychology to know that most people will go for bigger. will pay a little more to get A LOT more b/c of "value".
it's just mind blowing. the idea that these new laws to try to curtail and public health epidemic that is NOT going away are met with such anger.
it's totally misplaced. but we are too busy arguing amongst ourselves to see it.
I'm with you ladies 100%!!! Why people find it okay for companies with $$$ interest to advertise, but that it is not okay for the gov't to require hospitals, those that are supposedly there for our health, to encourage healthy behavior (which is shown over and over again by study after study) is beyond me. Yes, I'm a Bloomberg fan as well!

This is EXACTLY what this initiative is for!! It has nothing to do with forcing breastfeeding on anyone. If a mom wants to formula feed, she will get formula.
If she says she wants to breastfeed then they won't "just give the baby formula" as you stated above when this new initiative is in place.
For some reason no one is understanding this.
It has absolutely NOTHING to do with Bloomberg. He is just encouraging hospitals to participate. This is an initiative of the World Health Organization.
It is a VOLUNTARY program for hospitals to participate in, not a law. The hospitals that decide to participate will have to keep count of the formula they use so that it is documented that breastfed babies are not fed formula in the nursery at night if the mom doesn't want that. (This happens A LOT)
Moms who want to formula feed will GET FORMULA for their babies! They just have to ask. No one is hiding formula.
Moms who breastfeed won't have formula pushed on them. They will receive support for their decision to breastfeed.
