Delaying the MMR shot

If you delayed the MMR shot, can you talk to me about why you decided to? And can you point me to any research you used to back up your decision? And what age did you finally give it?

I'm terrified of this shot, and my DS has his 15 month check up next week so I'm guessing they are going to want to give it to him. I really want to delay to 2 years old, but I also feel like I need more info. I don't want to just google it though b/c I think that will be info overload.

Based in the way my child was after the MMR, I will delay it as long as possible for any future DC. It was awful.

I am really trying not to start another vaccination debate and I know I'm not answering your question, but why are you automatically scared of the MMR and are now looking for reasons to justify not administering it?

Just feel the need to restate- There is absolutely NO evidence the MMR vaccine causes autism.

My reasoning is so many people say their kids are "off" for a few days/weeks after the shot and I experienced that first hand. It was terrifying watching our12 month old become a completely different baby for a few weeks. I'd rather my next child be older so he/she could tell me their head hurt, tummy hurts, legs hurt, they're tired, etc.

i did not delay the MMR, our PED does it at 12m. my DD was DEF off a for a few days after the shot. i called the ped and she said it was probably not the shot. i still disagree. she was just "off" a bit. sort of clumsy (as clumsy as a 12m old can be really). she kept hurting herself doing things she was able to do with no problem. luckily she was back to normal within a few days.

i would probably delay just a little (maybe 18m or 2 years) with a future DC. i dont think any damage was done, but the difference was def noticeable to me. i usually go along with the doctor as far as vaccines because the research is just so convoluted and conflicting its hard to tell whats accurate and whats propaganda. i still trust my PED but from my own experience i would probably delay as long as it wouldnt cause any issues.

Thanks to those who provided their experiences. I really don't want to start a debate, so I won't go into my reasons for wanting to delay.

But I'd love to hear other's experiences and from anyone who did delay. Thanks!

my DS is 13 months and i am going to push it to 2...i would rather wait a little longer and ease my mind. Like someone said i want to wait until he can talk a little better and let me know if things are bothering him. Its a personal choice.

My DD had the MMR last month. There was no reaction what so ever, she is her normal self.

I delayed both my children's MMR till they were 3.

Here's the thing: I am well aware that there is no evidence that the MMR causes autism. But tell that to the legions of parents who claim their child was permanently damaged by the MMR or DTP.

Now, the MMR is usually given at 12 months or 18 months. Maybe 12 to 18 months is the window of time when regressive autism manifests itself-- maybe that's why it SEEMS like all those children began to regress right around the time of their MMR. I don't know. What I do know is, I could never live with myself if my child did indeed after the MMR and I could have delayed it. I just couldn't. If I delayed the shot and they still began to regress into autism during that timeframe, then they clearly were destined to be autistic and there's nothing I could have done about it.

So I waited until 3. Maybe I'm wrong, but I never heard of a 3 year old regressing after a vaccine. I felt safe at that age.

Our Ped gives it at the 12 month visit I delayed until 15 months. I wanted to originally give it at two years but there was an out break on one of the viruses at the time and I became more paranoid of the sickness than at the shot. My son didn't have any bad reaction from it.

My pediatrician gives the MMR at 2 years of age, even though there is no evidence of a link to autism. He does it basically for peace of mind......since autism is usually diagnosed between 15 and 18 months of age.

I'm fully aware that there is no link between mmr and autism. However, I think the current vaccination schedule is too aggressive. Children's immune and neurological systems are still developing and so delicate from the age of 0 to 3. I want their bodies to develop as nature intended before introducing foreign materials which could possibly cause a disruption or side effects.

I am not anti vaccine, I am just choosing to delay vaccines until 3-4 when their bodies are better able to handle them.

I know people say there is no link, and maybe by statistics or studies or whatever there is not

And I will never argue with someone who thinks there is no correlation,and maybe there is not

But I can tell u my now 9 year old niece vanessa who was a average 15 month old that babbled made eye contact said words

Got her mmr and was never the same,she is autistic,completly non verbal and has seizures

Was it from that,my sis thinks so, can it be proven,no we may never no

Just hards to tell the parent who watched what happened to their kid there is no relation

Whatver u decide make sure it is what u want,best of luck

I just want to reassure yuou a bit. I was worried about it and planned to hold off. Then there was a case reported by where I lived, and it scared me so much I ran in to get it for my DD earlier than I had planned (14 mths). My DD had ZERO reaction to it and I was glad I got it. Just wanted to share.

My DS had the MMR shot 3 weeks ago and still has a rash from it. He was very out of it for a few days and was running a temp for 3 days. He has been very irritable ever since.

I delayed with my DD until she was 3 and then with my DS he got it just under 3. I would do the same for any other kids I have as I want their nervous system to be better developed before giving the MMR or Chicken pox vaccine.
