Re: Delaying the MMR shot
My sister who is a children's chiropractor recommends waiting till they are at least 3. She has treated many kids who've had it before then and swears it causes developmental issues in the brain if the child had a reaction to it. All of my nephews got it between 3-4 and she is very careful with spacing out their shots because kids today get many more shots than our generation ever did. Dh and I are already having this discussion and we are going to space the shots out too.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
Just one more question, for those that delayed until 3 or even later, did your kids go to daycare? Did your daycare give you trouble about them not having it?

I delayed both my children's MMR till they were 3.
Here's the thing: I am well aware that there is no evidence that the MMR causes autism. But tell that to the legions of parents who claim their child was permanently damaged by the MMR or DTP.
Now, the MMR is usually given at 12 months or 18 months. Maybe 12 to 18 months is the window of time when regressive autism manifests itself-- maybe that's why it SEEMS like all those children began to regress right around the time of their MMR. I don't know. What I do know is, I could never live with myself if my child did indeed after the MMR and I could have delayed it. I just couldn't. If I delayed the shot and they still began to regress into autism during that timeframe, then they clearly were destined to be autistic and there's nothing I could have done about it.
So I waited until 3. Maybe I'm wrong, but I never heard of a 3 year old regressing after a vaccine. I felt safe at that age.
I completely agree. Both my children were around the age of 3 when they got it. As for the chickenpox vaccine, my dr will not give it unless I want it given or if a school/daycare required it. She feels unless someone tells her, she will not administer it. Both my children had no side effects from MMR, however my nephew had very high fevers and vomiting.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
I did not delay the shot. Ds got the MMR at 15 months and had a fever the next day. He was back to normal within 48 hours. Honestly, I'd be more afraid of my baby getting one of those illnesses, that's why I listen to my dr. And go by his schedule.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
My twins got MMR at 18 months. DD had a rash about a week and a half later that didn't bother her at all and cleared up in a few days. DS had no reaction at all. They are both bright, articulate, perfectly functioning 3.5 year olds.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
We were very nervous when it came time for dd to get her mar shot...she got it at 12 months n is now 14 months and no sign in change except for her horrible sleep pattern lately but im sure that is something we created. We switched ped n she gets her chicken pox shot next month.
We were going to put off as well ...with everything on google n word of mouth you never know what to believe , its so scary now that i had dd to know every choice we make for her effects her future .

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
Question for the ladies that gave the mmr at 3 ~ when are you giving them there mmr booster? (suppose to be at 4 yrs old) Would you delay that or give that on time?

I believe my DS got it somewhere between 5 and 5 1/2. I just made sure he had it for kindergarten, since that's when it was required.
My DD is only 3 1/2 but will also get it before kindergarten.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
I don't want to start a vaccine debate at all, but here is an article I like to refer to that explains a lot in great detail (warning: it is long). It's an oldie but goodie.
Article from Wired
"Twelve epidemiological studies have found no data that links the MMR (measles/mumps/rubella) vaccine to autism; six studies have found no trace of an association between thimerosal (a preservative containing ethylmercury that has largely been removed from vaccines since 20011) and autism, and three other studies have found no indication that thimerosal causes even subtle neurological problems. The so-called epidemic, researchers assert, is the result of improved diagnosis, which has identified as autistic many kids who once might have been labeled mentally retarded or just plain slow. In fact, the growing body of science indicates that the autistic spectrum — which may well turn out to encompass several discrete conditions — may largely be genetic in origin. In April, the journal Nature published two studies that analyzed the genes of almost 10,000 people and identified a common genetic variant present in approximately 65 percent of autistic children."

My DD just had the MMR booster a month ago at age 5, the ped. said they just need it before K.
My child had no reaction to either MMR.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
I would honestly prefer my child being "off" for a few days or even weeks than delaying the MMR and putting them at risk of getting measles, mumps, or rubella. There was an outbreak of either measles or mumps (don't remember which) not that long ago at the source mall and I couldn't live with myself if my child contracted it because I delayed the vaccine. My son got his at 15 months and had zero reaction and my daughter will be getting hers at her next pediatrician visit at 15 months.

Delaying the MMR shot
My DC had there MMR at 2yrs at my request and the ped was fine with it! Also instead of giving the 2nd MMR at 4yo I had titers drawn to check there immunity and there titers were good so no need for the 2nd mmr or the chickenpox vaccine at this time! My DD will be attending kindergarten and the school was fine with the positive titers!
If you want to delay the vaccine then delay it! Go with your "gut instinct"!

i showed up and he got it. never a doubt in my mind. my ped is the one who incurred serious debts from all those years in med school - I chose them and I trust them. i follow their lead.

Yes, I believe it was a child that had been traveling abroad that was the source. These diseases are being seen more and more these days because of delayed vaccinations, which makes me all the more vigilant about giving them to my children on time.

Try not to let this scare you! I know it's hard with everything you read, to know what is right. Maybe there is no right or wrong, you just need to do what you feel is best. There is so much out there- you'll never be able to enjoy your children if you start to fear everything. I know its easier said than done -especially with a little baby. And just remember, all the times you hear the bad "what happened to my kid" there are so many more "nothing happened" stories, but it's just not what stands out.
That being said, I can't remember if DS got the MMR at 12, 15 or 18 months - but he has never had a reaction to any vaccine. We try to keep from doing more then 2 vaccines at at one time. Sometimes this means an extra visit to the ped, but I just would rather that.
And I am a total worry-wart myself. The other night DS must have been having some awful nightmare or something. He's been coughing so I went in when he was incoherent - coughing, crying, whining, - and I could not seem to comfort him. His eyes were open but I don't think he was awake. Must have been 5-10 minutes and he finally passed out on DH. For some reason instead of thinking at the time it was a nightmare, I was certain he had some sort of seizure and would never be the same. Really, no reason for me to think that but that is where my mind goes.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
as a PP mentioned, I am not scared about my child being "off" for a few days (which he was around days 10/11 - mild rash and fever). I am worried about his exposure to all those who DO NOT vaccinate or vaccinate late in the game. To me, 1-2 days of being "off" trumps the possibility of contracting life threatening diseases because others chose not to vaccinate.

agreed. my daughter gets the shots when the ped tells us its time.
i trust them. and i would not be able to live with myself if she came down with one of these illnesses (that seem to be popping up more and more now)

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
Delayed both my boys.
#1 got his at 2yr 3mnths #2 got his 2yrs 5mnths
I have no reason other then they weren't in daycare/school.
Now that they are both going to preschool they had to have the shot. Other than that I just didn't want them to have the shot combined with any others.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
I waited until 3. Not blaming drs, but when baby was 6 mos old, he was given a shot. at 9 mos appt, flyers all over drs office that his previous shot had been recalled. at that moment i decided to create my own shot schedule. he is my kid and it is my decision. at 12 mos appt, i told ped no mmr, he stormed out of room and i never saw him again.

Re: Delaying the MMR shot
My kids are 3.5 and will be getting the MMR soon. I have delayed most of their shots simply because I felt more comfortable without putting a ton of chemicals into their little bodies. They are very healthy and have shown little to no reactions with the shots they have gotten.

Nope you are NOT the only one. She gets her shots on time, per the schedule my ped recommends. I figure he knows a LITTLE bit more than I do about these things. Med school trumps Google.
