It's a great way to spread awareness and you know what? Not every person is in a position to donate money. I know somebody who has been challenged by 5 people. He dumped 5 buckets of water on himself and donated what he could afford. And it made him feel good to be a part of something that was spreading awareness and to be able to fulfill a donation been if his donation was simply his discomfort. I really can't find a reason for people to be so angry by something so good
I love watching the videos. I love it even more that it has raised donations by 500 percent last month. As for people who try to get attention. Who cares? If it is making them happy. Let it.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
Do you know anyone with ALS? Have you ever watched anyone waste away from this tragic disease? See someone lose their ability to walk, swallow and communicate? Well, I have and it ain't pretty!
My MIL didn't live to see us get married or met her grandchildren so I for one is extremely grateful for the "stupid ice water challenge"!!! Thank you to all that have done it and donated. I can only hope the increase in donations will lead to a cure.
It seems so petty to "whine" about this "stupid challenge". I guess we have moved passed being a LittleDiva to a Big?

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
I honestly am sick reading some of these posts! I had to stop! I bet everyone of you that thinks this challenge is "stupid" never knew someone with ALS.
My Uncle, who I lived with, died from this horrible disease. He was diagnosed in June 07 and died November 09. He was 49 years old when he passed. Leaving behind 4 children, a wife, family and friends. There is no cure, there is no fight for ALS. It is a death sentence and it is cruel. Your mind stays intact while your body forgets how to live.
This challenge is raising awareness and money for ALS. How could anything that is not hurting anyone and just helping be "stupid"
I pray that none of you ever have to experience ALS first hand.
And I'm sorry that your Facebook feed is being taken over by "stupidity". I'm sure it more important to upload another selfie!

I was going to post but decided against it until I see how upset some are getting. I am all for the awareness, no doubt about that. What I dont get is this turned into a popularity contest where people are just putting water over their heads and never mention once that they will also donate. Are people donating? Absolutely. Is everyone? Nope. What is the point if you are not do donating and the majority of the ones I have been on fb do not mention ALS.

sorry, but my feed is FULL of attention-seeking 20-somethings who don't seem to be making donations. My former boss is the only one to wave a check in front of the camera before dumping water on her head.

Well said! Do it if you want! Donate if you can!
ALS does not get as much attention as other diseases! I think it is great!

I have only seen ONE person who did show a check and that is actually the only person I would ever trust to do so as that is the type of person he is. I truly don't believe that the majority of the people I have seen are donating. I get that people ARE but, yes, the younger crowd is probably not.

I agree.
I didn't read this whole thread to come to that conclusion.
I also think some people let FB take over their lives a little TOO much.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
My friends are I are those dastardly 20-somethings who just love attention.
It's become a known thing, in my circle anyway. We know we're to donate as well as do the challenge; just because we don't say how much we are donating or something doesn't mean we aren't doing it.
Some of you really need to chill out. Why are you so stressed and annoyed over something that you can easily ignore and has no impact on your life?
If your worst problem is seeing something you don't like on your FB feed, I am jealous.

Re: this stupid ice water challenge....
My 14 year old son was nominated to do this. So I asked him.......... Do you know why you're doing this or what ALS is, or are you just doing it because everyone on facebook is.. His answer was just what I thought, " because everyone on facebook is" ..
So I told him if he wanted to do it, that was fine, but he needed to research what ALS is and also donate 5.00 of his own money to the fund.. HE did just that ... Actually proud of him for following through, and glad it is bringing some awareness to the cause.

I had a very dear friend who died for ALS a few years ago. It was devastating. It is a disease that struck close to my heart & I want it eradicated as much as I want cancer eradicated. That said, this challenge isn't something I'd ever participate in. For me, what bugs me is the idea of nominating someone. While it's a charity that I do support, who am I to tell someone else they should dump a bucket over their head or donate $100?

Those who are annoyed by seeing this on Facebook..
What exactly would you like to see on Facebook? People complaining about their life? Bragging about it? Posting selfies?
I'll make a confession. When I first saw the challenge, I had to look up what ALS even was. I knew of Lou Gehrig's disease, but not by it's actual name. And I'm a college educated individual..I just don't know everything about everything. So for me, it made me more aware and caused me to spend time researching something I probably wouldn't have otherwise.

It's raising awareness and boatloads of money.
And you can scroll past it or not accept a challenge to do it. No big deal.
So really, no whining. Amen ! If the money keeps coming in then it is working well!

Just because the person doesn't hold up a check in front of the camera doesn't mean they didn't make a donation. I didn't record myself typing in my credit card number but I still made a donation. I mean did you also see them put it in an envelope, address it, put it in the mailbox and watch the mailman take it away?

I was just about to write this too. No one I know showed themselves donating but I know they did, and if your feed is full do attention seeking 20somethings or any age and it bothers you so much maybe you shouldn't be friends with them on fb in the first place

Thank you! And yes it is working. 4.2 million was donated in the past two weeks so I'm sure plenty of those that didn't wave a check in front of the damn camera donated as well!
