Amtrak derailment
When you get on Amtrak the conductor comes through car by car and scans your ticket - being so close to Phili they might not have scanned her ticket yet. I took the same train back from Baltimore two weeks ago - very easy to get on and not be scanned right away especially commuter times with packed trains

CNN: Amtrak train may have been traveling in excess of 100mph according to sources. The turn is rated for 50mph
Yup. NTSB just confirmed the numbers. Well he said preliminary numbers but they are pretty confident in their report. Speed was up to 106 mph in a 50 mph max zone. Unbelievable

Well he's all lawyered up now. Refuses to make a statement per the daily mail. The true speed will come out soon enough.

It was going over 100mph and that was after applying the brakes. He's refusing to talk to cops.

Has to be asleep. Even if you are texting you HAVE to know you are going that fast. Do those trains normally go that fast? I know Acela does but this was a regional. LIRR trains usually top out at 50-60mph through some of the fastest parts of the island.
Could also be drugs (illegal or prescription).

Re: Amtrak derailment
It boggles the mind that there are no real penalties for reckless driving in a car, and a car accident caused by speeding/weaving/texting can kill as many or more people than this guy killed.
This behavior should be punished and policed before it kills.

I agree!
And it boggles my mind that they make cars / trains to go up to these excessive speeds. There's no need for it.

They did confirm on the news that the young mom and CEO was among the 7 deceased. How sad for her family. All the families.

The engineer is saying he has " absolutely no recollection of the incident".
Probably because he was sleeping!

Such a shame. Just like the Bronx incident. They need to have co engineers like on a plane! I guarantee this wouldn't happen with two people. These incidents are becoming too frequent.

Re: Amtrak derailment
the worst part is that Amtrak didn't have that safety device installed that stops or slows a train down at curves and bridges, the same kind that shouldve been at spuyten duyvil in Metro north. How is it that the federal government is not MANDATING that device on all railways? I heard on the news that that device hasn't been installed on MOST of the northeast corridor trains that ARE THE MOST HEAVILY TRAFFICKED IN THE NATION. W t F is wrong with this country?
So to me the feds also bear responsibility for these deaths and injuries. I wonder if a sitting senator or congressman were killed if the mandate for that device would come down from on high.
ps the young man that was killed was from Rockaway Beach and I know his aunt very well. From all accounts he was a superstar. God rest his soul and give his family comfort, along with all the other families.

my Dh rides this line every day via SEPTA regional rail as we live in PA. He knows exactly where this turn is and is freaking out a little. the lines are currently shut so he has to work from home.
prayers to all those involved and their families.
DH is taking this train to Baltimore in a few weeks. Between the riots (which i know have calmed down) and the train he is freaking out!
Praying for all those poor families

I read a comment someone made on FB yesterday stating if Congress would get their heads out of women's vaginas maybe they could keep the citizens of this country safe and avoid horrific incidents like this. Funny and true

I keep seeing this, but it's not Congresses fault (or anyone else's) that this man was operating the train at twice the speed limit.

I disagree with placing blame on the feds. If a city bus driver is driving twice the speed limit and crashes, it's the bus driver's fault. Not the government's. This man likely fell asleep. If he was doing his JOB, this wouldn't have happened.
and I bet he is going to go with the sleep apnea defense like the Bronx driver (who faced NO charges in the end)

maybe he fell asleep, maybe he didn't. If there was a device to stop a bus from speeding i'd be all for that too. But this is a train, and human error could've been taken out of the equation and saved lives. You have every right to disagree, but if you're a family member, if think you'd be right there in Washington dc lobbying for this.

Amtrak derailment
I hate to say it, but this is why trains in japan are automated - no human error - and those trains REGULARLY go 100+ mph. You don't even need to remove the engineer entirely, put the damn thing on autopilot, and have the TRAINED engineer as a back up for the autopilot JUST IN CASE. I agree, why wasn't the safety device on this train, and how many more people are going to have to be killed before they do something about it?

But if the operator was going almost twice the speed limit, how is it the fault of Congress? This is a prime example of the lack of personal accountability.

Re: Amtrak derailment
I know practically nothing about trains in the US...
But isn't Amtrak considered a high-speed train? A speed of 100 mph doesn't sound excessive to me. Or is the train situation in the US that sucky that there are no high-speed trains? Isn't the point of these intercity trains to go faster than driving?
The LIRR or Metro North I can understand the limit being 60-70 because it's a commuter train.
Maybe I've just been living too long in the land of high speeds to think that the 100 mph on Amtrak doesn't seem that crazy to me.

Not sure of all areas. But in that location the max was 50mph, most likely because of the curve.
