After reading all 8 pages of this thread, I must add my 2 cents. I don't think many of you understand the MAGNITUDE of this historic event. He is the FIRST African American president!!! This inuagural ball should be the biggest most FABULOUS ball of all time. Whether or not it was being funded by taxpayer's money is not the issue. He deserves a big celebration. This celebration is not only to celebrate his election, but to commemorate this time in history. How dare anyone say it shouldn't be as big as previous years. Although I know that to many of you this is just another president (one you didn't vote for), but to many like myself and my family, this is much bigger. This is a time in history that we will tell our children and grandchildren about.
so basically we should be celebrating his race and not his potential?
Like I said, you just don't understand. Your question is ridiculous. Go back and reread.
that is the way i read it as well. the content of your post was all about race
If it was, then fine. However an inuagural ball is a tradition. Its not a celebration of a president's potential, but its a celebration to welcome him into his new position. This is why I think the question was ridiculous. I was just stating my opinion on why I think it shouldn't be toned, down but rather bigger than ever.

if people dont agree on scaling back in times of economic hardship, then so be it
However, i dont think it should be BIGGER. The same - fine. Would it be bigger if it were the first Jewish president?
oh wait, that would NEVER happen

I agree with you, kinda, I was just making sure that you weren't saying that it should be bigger and better this year because of his race.

Why not? If it were the first Jewish President, I would feel the same way. Its a time in history that should be celebrated.

I think Obama should do whatever he wants with the money that was raised. he worked hard to get that money and if he wants to use it for the inaugural celebrations, he should. He shouldn't have to balance the budget with it, nor should he have to "spread the wealth" around. He worked for it, he should spend it and everyone should leave him alone. He shouldn't be accused of not being "fair" or "unpatriotic" - he worked hard and should have a huge celebration. I love the inaugural balls - it is tradition.
ITA.
I also agree with some of the points that Don made. I wouldn't think less of Obama if he chose to have a big-a$$ party- Maybe i'd even do the same thing , but it could be a great opportunity for change- to prove that he's different and that things will operate differently. Still- it's his choice and i think he's right with whichever decision he makes.

Re: Anyone agree???
Posted by juanvi BTW, it's really obvious that the McCain supporters will take a long long time to get over the fact that Obama won. This is just 1 of the many threads that prove that.
Honestly, this comment is completely uncalled for. If you take issue with a few people/posters on this topic, fine, but these generalizations are becoming ridiculous. I supported McCain and he lost, so I graciously accepted that Obama is going to be my president now. I support him, as does my DH and almost ALL of my family members (including the old-school ultra conservative republicans). He was not our first choice, but now he is our (soon to be) President and we accept that- we have "gotten over it". We actually got over it that night- we have good coping skills. Are there people that haven't accepted it or probably wont accept it? Of course, but that doesn't make it acceptable to make these statements. Especially when many of us show more respect than that.

very well said. I agree with what you wrote word for word. DH is an ultra conservative- refuses to ever vote democrat. But even he "got over it" almost right away.

disagree. its a tradition and imho it should be upheld.
im in the minority, i know.
they spend billions on their campaign, whats another few million...
thats like saying- "dont have a big wedding at oheka castle and expect people to give gifts to cover their plate in the state of the economy"

nah... I don't think its the taxpayers paying for it.
Let Oprah foot the bill
Now, I like that idea!
I am thinking that they must still have a few mill left over from the 750 million they raised in campaign funding!

To me, it's about PR.
In no way do I think he shouldn't have a reception celebrating. But I think it sends the wrong signal to be excessively lavish.
I think they'll be tasteful with their receptions.

Aw, don't say that!
This election has renewed my faith in Americans to look past the characteristics that have held us back for so long...it's such a fresh start!
All the talk about Bobby Jindal renews my faith even more.
Hillary & Sarah both made tremendous strides for women in this election.
I hope that one day we can begin to look past religion in the same way.
ETA: I think Obama is absolutely deserving of a wonderful celebration.
