To the OP, I agree, that would be nice. I'm not sure who funds it though, and if it's not taxpayers, then do it up! He deserves it! BTW, it's really obvious that the McCain supporters will take a long long time to get over the fact that Obama won. This is just 1 of the many threads that prove that.

watch the generalizations.

i dont think anyone has to "get over the fact"; i mean, it is what it is, and as ive said - i wish him luck; i hope he does well, and if he proves me wrong i'll vote for him in 2012 - that was not the intent of the thread

Re: Anyone agree???

I think Obama should do whatever he wants with the money that was raised. he worked hard to get that money and if he wants to use it for the inaugural celebrations, he should. He shouldn't have to balance the budget with it, nor should he have to "spread the wealth" around. He worked for it, he should spend it and everyone should leave him alone. He shouldn't be accused of not being "fair" or "unpatriotic" - he worked hard and should have a huge celebration. I love the inaugural balls - it is tradition.

I think Obama should have his party at my house. We'll get a few 6 foot heroes and macaroni salad. I'll play the "Awesome Mix" on my ipod and mow the patio for this special occasion.

If anyone wants to come pay $5 at the door I'll give you a red cup and write your name on it with a sharpie.

Re: Anyone agree???

While it might not be in the best taste- look at it this way- it is going to create jobs- someone has to cook the dinner- serve the dinner, clean-up from the dinner, designer's dresses will get bought, dry cleaners will clean suits- I think its a good thing- potentially it could create some cash flow for the very people that need it now

Re: Anyone agree???

I think he should have the biggest inauguration party that any president-elect ever had. And I think he should be able to spend every dime of his money on it because he DID work hard for it and he earned it. And I think that spending it IS good for the economy.

I am just completely and totally flabbergasted that some of the people that agree with the above statements are the same people that last week said the exact opposite when referring to ordinary Americans. People who said that people who worked hard and earned a lot of money should not be free to spend all of it as they fit, and should have to give some of it to other people who are in need.

I see it from the OP viewpoint, but I also think he worked hard and deserves a proper celebration. What the hell? Like the party's going to do us in anymore?Chat Icon

To me, I think it's all about the message it sends.

First of all, if it's not being done with the taxpayers' money, then it's hus business to do whatever he wants with it.

And he definitely has the right to celebrate and no one should begrudge him that.

But his campaign was based on this idea of "change" - focusing on the plight of the middle class.

I mean today alone, the unemployment report for October is coming out in NY, and is going to report a loss of 200,000 jobs.

While no one can tell him what to do with his money, or private money - if it were me, I might want to send the message to the people struggling that "I'm going to celebrate, but I get you. I get the struggles the US economy is facing, I get the hardships that many are going through trying to make ends meet, I get the fact that many companies are scaling back on holiday celebrations this year. So, as your president, and one of you, I'm going to celebrate, but will do so in a tempered and level manner."

I'm not saying his spending millions will hurt him in the long run, but if you really want to continue to connect with the American people, taking their hardships as your own, might be a good way to do it.

EXACTLY how I feel. Just like the enormous money spent on the campaign. When I brought it up I was told "it costs a lot of money to win, and it always has"
I'm just waiting for the "change" that will GO against the same bad behavior politicians have had for decades.

Re: Anyone agree???

First of all, it's the inauguration of the PRESIDENT!!! That's not something to poo-poo. Damn, people don't bat an eye spending $75K on a wedding, kwim?

Second of all, I heard recently that miliatary pilots are given XXX amount of money for fuel and they have to use it regardless of whether they need it or not. So they fuel up. And then they dump it.

Then there is this ridiculous number being tossed around that we spend EVERY DAY on a war.

Then we have baseball players making $60,000,000 over 5 years.

Then we have movie stars making $20,000,000 for a movie.

Then we have companies needing BILLIONS of dollar in bail outs.

Is the inaugural ball the first place to cut corners? NO. Chat Icon I'm sure the 5 or 10 million dollars spent or whatever it is can be spared.

Re: Anyone agree???

After reading all 8 pages of this thread, I must add my 2 cents. I don't think many of you understand the MAGNITUDE of this historic event. He is the FIRST African American president!!! This inuagural ball should be the biggest most FABULOUS ball of all time. Whether or not it was being funded by taxpayer's money is not the issue. He deserves a big celebration. This celebration is not only to celebrate his election, but to commemorate this time in history. How dare anyone say it shouldn't be as big as previous years. Although I know that to many of you this is just another president (one you didn't vote for), but to many like myself and my family, this is much bigger. This is a time in history that we will tell our children and grandchildren about.

Oh, come on... Chat Icon What the OP was saying was, why shouldn't HIS inaugural celebration be just as grand as any in past years? The fact that he's breaking new ground and making history just HAPPENS to be based on the fact that he's African-American, but not everything always has to boil down to race. Chat Icon

Re: Anyone agree???

I think he should have a giant bash. He will be facing the toughest job on the planet.

Let him party now because it ain't going to be a party when he takes office.

No, I don't think it should be scaled back.

It's historical, traditional and although he embodies change, he is still a traditional person with an appreciation of tradition in public office.

You should read his book, the Audacity of Hope. He speaks from the heart and is truly traditional and speaks about the awe he feels about people who served before him.

no need to eye roll me please, the post was about celebraing because he is an AA (actually bi-racial) pres. elect. and how THAT is historical, but I was under the impression it was to celebrate the honor of the title and the potential he brings.
