How does being opposed to Obama equate to not being concerned about America or Americans?

It doesn't make sense. So what you are saying is that if you're not for Obama then you're not for America? It was a very valid question that snowflake asked.

the idea of it is a way to say that obama is being a hypocrite if he has a bells and whistles function b/c he is so concerned about the country.

I do think it's sad that anyone would begrudge him the party. it means so much to so many people.

but whatever...anyone could be taken to task for doing ANYTHING remotely frivilous when people are starving. if Obama's campaign has taught us anything, it's that we should be responsible to and accountable for, each other.

so we should ALL cancel our fancy parties, stop buying holiday gifts...not go on vacation...

we who have a surplus should stop doing ALL of those things, put our money into a kitty, and save each other from losing our homes, and going hungry.

Should people not have 50,000 dollar weddings now because other people are struggling?

IMO, as long as its not taxpayer money, they are free to use it how ever they choose.

Gotcha...

I do not think he should cancel, but maybe tone it down a little. Even if it is not taxpayer money, I think it shows true compassion and understanding of the situation we are living in.

I understand what you're saying, but brides and grooms aren't the President who needs to be wise and lead by example.

you can have a fabulous party on the cheap. you can have a low key seeming party and spend beaucoup dollars...

I think we should just let the party happen and leave it alone.

are we gonna nitpick that he used roses for the cp's when carnations would have been cheaper?

or that Prime Rib is more cost effective than Filet Mignon?

are we gonna begrudge his daughters birthday parties too? when it's their turn to party in the white house?

when will it end?

Also, I'd like to know, has Obama already said he will be spending huge amounts of money on a ball, or are we just assuming based on history?

this is all one big assumption which is why this is kind of ridiculous.

this is EXACTLY where this line of thinking is headed.

Re: Anyone agree???

I think he should have the same level of innauguration as presidents before him. Yeah, times are bad, but as many posters have pointed out the innaugration brings jobs, tourism boosts to the economy etc. It doesn't make any sense in a down economy for people to stop spending money if they have it, that just makes the economy worse. The cancellation of big company christmas parties in NYC, for example is causing people in the catering industry to lose their jobs, further hurting the economy. It is good for the economy for people who have $$$ to spend $$$.

Plus, this election has done a great job of pumping people up about the future of this country. I say, use the innauguration to keep the momentum going.

If the innaugural ball was paid for with tax dollars (which it isn't) it would be a totally different story.

I haven't heard anything about a big party so far, but it's possible I missed this bit of news. Assuming he is planning one, I am a little curious as to where the money is coming from, but he definitely should have some sort of celebration.

Funny, some of the same people complaining about this didn't seem to have a problem with Sarah Palin's clothing expenditures, also pretty unecessary. I think it all depends who is spending the money.

where is the drama? you are seeing things my friend.

and I didn't compare the two, I extrapolated the idea outward. a difference.

in any event....you asked if people agreed and you got mixed answers AND the reasons behind them....if dissenting opinions are drama by nature...well then, there you have your drama.

Yes, but you are talking about frivolous spending during our tough economic climate. Did Palin need to spend $150K on clothes? Heck no, yet she did and then some if the reports are true. Should someone selling herself as an everyday mom have done this? Uhm, no. So if your argument is that no unecessary spending should go on right now because it is in poor taste, your logic is flawed if you excuse the clothing as well.

however, it is along the same lines since SHE didnt purchase the clothing herself.
He is not paying 40million or so for a party by himself.

and I personally never defended the clothing argument;

aslo Palin's $150K wardrobe was bought with Public funding the inaugrual ball would be private funds.

This to me is a HUGE difference.

I'm not saying you defended her purchases, just pointing out that you have not criticized them either, at least not here.

Again, I haven't heard anything official about this party, but if he is using private money, I think it's fine.

And If That Isn't A True Blue Miracle

Re: Anyone agree???

Again, I think alot of people are missing the point here.

And I'll preface the following by saying that I voted for Obama, so you can't accuse me of being a bitter McCain-supporter.

No one is saying, "don't celebrate"

I mean, he made history, he deserves to party like a rock star. No question at all.

But at the same time, he's the President of the United States, or soon to be.

This isn't just some citizen that has some surplus cash to spend - this is the President, and one of his responsibilities is to lead by example.

Yes - it's his money, and no one can tell him what to do with it.

Yes - it will help put money back into the DC economy.

But there are 49 other states that are in pretty bad shape.

And, one of the main focuses of his campaign was on the middle class. I just think it would serve him well, and enhance his already great public image, if, right out of the gate, he said, "You know what, America? I feel your pain, and as your leader, I am going to celebrate, but as many of you are, I am going to scale back on anything deemed unecessary."
