I disagree, I think he should feel free to spend the MILLIONS plus on his Inaguaral Ball. Why?
Not only is it a historical election which deserves to be celebrated, those millions of dollars are going to allow DC waiters/waitresses, caterers, florists, musicians with money to pay THEIR mortgages.

And, one of the main focuses of his campaign was on the middle class. I just think it would serve him well, and enhance his already great public image, if, right out of the gate, he said, "You know what, America? I feel your pain, and as your leader, I am going to celebrate, but as many of you are, I am going to scale back on anything deemed unecessary."
but who is the deemer? what is necessary to one and not the other?
this is a lose lose way of looking at it, I think.
besides, people are scaling back (or should be) out of necessity. the reality is, our economy THRIVES when we SPEND.
leading by example would be to spend WITHIN his means. so as long as he is using his debit card for the party favors, he IS leading by example.

Again, I think alot of people are missing the point here.
And I'll preface the following by saying that I voted for Obama, so you can't accuse me of being a bitter McCain-supporter.
No one is saying, "don't celebrate"
I mean, he made history, he deserves to party like a rock star. No question at all.
But at the same time, he's the President of the United States, or soon to be.
This isn't just some citizen that has some surplus cash to spend - this is the President, and one of his responsibilities is to lead by example.
Yes - it's his money, and no one can tell him what to do with it.
Yes - it will help put money back into the DC economy.
But there are 49 other states that are in pretty bad shape.
I don't agree, there are more positives to having the ball then not to.
The biggest being the boost the spending will give that local economy.
As many have said before we have had hard times before and still have always had ball for the new President.
If you start with the ball where does it end, what is he allowed to celebrate and what is he allowed to spend on.
Also it sends a message that things are even worse than we imagine it, it woudl undercut the confidence of the state of our economy even further.

If so I assume that people would not donate if they could not afford it

Should people not have 50,000 dollar weddings now because other people are struggling?
IMO, as long as its not taxpayer money, they are free to use it how ever they choose.
$50,000 weddings are not publicized for the whole nation to see - i dont see the connection here.

#1 - nowhere did I ever say "don't have the ball"
#2 - Good for DC - what about the rest of the country?
#3 - I think it would send a message that things are bad. Let's face it, they are - and that shouldn't be sugar-coated. For his image, I think it would serve him better to acknowledge the times we live in, scale it down, and then when he makes good on his promises, then go nuts.
Hey, spending millions may not hurt his image at all. I'm just saying that this would really make a nice impact out of the gate.

Re: Anyone agree???
If that's the case then what about the millions BOTH canidates spent on FUNDING their campaigns? THAT was MILLIONS more then this, and also privately funded so why not give some of THAT money back or what about the carbon footprint they left and now they talk about cleaning up the world and so on......I say rock on. Private money is Private money.........The almost $1BILLION dollars spent on the election is WAY more then $75Million for a ball.....

Re: Anyone agree???
While I agree that he should celebrate bc it is historic and a great accomplishment, I think it would send an amazing message to the American people and to the world, if he used some of that money on some of the struggling businesses and depressed areas in the country. Look at Bloomberg-- he doesn't even take a salary -- he gives it back to the city. If Obama did this, it would be so amazing and maybe get many people who didn't vote for him to respect him.

I think that BOTH parties spent millions and millions of dollars on thier campaigns and spent the $ smearing the other candidates and defending themselves, and THAT money could have helped out America tremendously, instead of the both of them arguing over taxation amouts that come out of our pockets! Indeed.

see my post from a few pages back on the PIC. It is typically the state societies that throw the balls and the political parties, state party orgs, etc.

Re: Anyone agree???
it would be so easy to say "use campaign money for these activities" when the simple truth is that it's not that simple.
There are LAWS attached to what can and cannot be done with campaign donations. You can't just use those funds willy nilly for whatever you want.

in any event....you asked if people agreed and you got mixed answers AND the reasons behind them....if dissenting opinions are drama by nature...well then, there you have your drama.

To the OP, I agree, that would be nice. I'm not sure who funds it though, and if it's not taxpayers, then do it up! He deserves it! BTW, it's really obvious that the McCain supporters will take a long long time to get over the fact that Obama won. This is just 1 of the many threads that prove that.

see but that is where you are dead wrong it has NOTHING to do with who won I prefaced it that way; stating that I would feel that way, REGARDLESS of who won.
