Best school districts?
DH and I are just starting our adventure to find a home. Number one on our list is a good school district. Which Nassau towns have the best school districts?

Re: Best school districts?
Jericho and RVC are always on top, but those 5 are generally rated the highest and I think Herricks, Roslyn and Plainview/Old Bethpage are rated high as well.
It is a touchy subject here. It is often thought that test scores and other things like AP classes throw off the accuracy of ratings. I think attendance, graduation rates and college/other post HS school admittance makes a big difference in how a school district is rated. It is what it is.

I agree. If we ever moved to Nassau, it would be in one of these areas.

Re: Best school districts?
I always ask "what *is* great"? Some parents want a top-notch sports team, so their DC has a better chance of getting a college sports scholarship. Others want a good special needs program. Others want a small school with a high teacher to student ratio. Others want a large school, which usually has more resources. Some parents want a great theater program, where others want a science oriented school.
No one person can tell you what a "great" district is, only what they believe is good for them, which could be the exact opposite of what you want.
(I don't know Nassau at all, so I have absolutely no opinion of any districts.... )

Re: Best school districts?
Syosset, garden city, great neck, jericho are all good, but the taxes are really hight in those areas. South shore is less, which is where we looked and bought. We stuck to the following when looking:
Plainedge (where we are) Seaford Wantagh Bellmore

Re: Best school districts?
it really depends on what you can afford... i know jericho is a really good SD but its super expensive to live there. I grew up on the south shore so i was familiar w/ sd's in those areas and when we house hunted we looked in seaford, massapequa, wantagh, bellmore, merrick and plainedge sd.

I completely agree with this. "Best school districts" are all relative. People have different values and things that are important to them.
And people also need to be careful with the rankings that are published in places like Newsday because they can be skewed.
In my opinion, the best way to learn about a district is to walk around the buildings and talk to people, teachers, students and parents.

You have an excellent point! Right now we don't have kids so its difficult for us to judge what we're looking for in a district.

ITA I couldn't have said it better myself. We ended up buying in Wantagh DS started 5th grade here and is now in middle school. I can tell you I am in constant communication with his teachers. I have been more than pleased with the school district, love the teachers and all the support they have provided for my son. The only thing I don't like is that theres no full time kindergarden but hopefully that changes

Re: Best school districts?
My problem was, all of the great districts--we couldn't touch the taxes.
We bought in Bellmore (north). Commute played into where we bought too, but SD was first.
I also really didn't want to send my kids to schools that are VERY socially competitive...IE where kids drive lux cars for their first cars. Where kids judge other kids based on what kind of car their parents drive. Where kids berate other kids for not having designer handbags and clothes. Alot of the "best" schools fall into that category.
In fact, we looked at a house in South Bellmore (that we could afford) that was in the Kennedy part of the school district, and I preferred Mepham for that reason.
Hope that helps!

Wow this is so true! Its the main reason why we didn't buy where we rented before. During DS baseball games I would hear parents talk about how much birthday parties were going to cost (more than my wedding) and how they just bought a horse this weekend....I didn't even own my car at the time
