My problem was, all of the great districts--we couldn't touch the taxes.

We bought in Bellmore (north). Commute played into where we bought too, but SD was first.

I also really didn't want to send my kids to schools that are VERY socially competitive...IE where kids drive lux cars for their first cars. Where kids judge other kids based on what kind of car their parents drive. Where kids berate other kids for not having designer handbags and clothes. Alot of the "best" schools fall into that category.

In fact, we looked at a house in South Bellmore (that we could afford) that was in the Kennedy part of the school district, and I preferred Mepham for that reason.

Hope that helps!

I have a good friend that just got a teaching job at Kennedy and she absolutely HATES it. She says that she is not allowed to teach, that all the district cares about is test scores and they basically just have to train the students to score high on exams. She has no freedom to actually stimulate and challenge her students intellectually. After hearing that, I decided I would never want to send my kids there regardless of their great reputation.

I'm very happily in Great Neck, with children, if you have any questions. If you or your husband works in midtown, you can't beat the commute. That made it worth the expense for us - The commuting time to Syosset is a half hour more each way on the LIRR to Penn. Its also a great place for young couples without kids -- lots of nice apartment/condos, a real town center with restaurants and movie theater, close to the city to go out.

Wow this is so true! Its the main reason why we didn't buy where we rented before. During DS baseball games I would hear parents talk about how much birthday parties were going to cost (more than my wedding) and how they just bought a horse this weekend....I didn't even own my car at the time Chat Icon

LOL where did you rent?

I'm glad I'm not the only person that feels this way!

I rented in South Merrick for a year. Don't get me wrong there were alot of very nice people but I just felt out of place.
