Honestly, I don't think its enough. I don't think 5 cents is really going to deter people, but it is a start, at least.

I agree with you in a way. And it would make more sense to me if stores stopped offering them altogether. Whether someone pays 5 cents for the bag or not, it still exists, KWIM? So in order for the situation to get better enough people need to be deterred that the shops won't feel the need to stock them and I think it could take a very long time for the effects to be felt by the stores.

I think this is a GREAT idea. It will work just like the bottle bill does and raise some badly needed revenue. FANTASTIC idea!

I think it is a great idea. They charge for bags in Italy.

It would motivate lazy people like myself who haven't made the switch to cloth bags!

I think its a GREAT idea, and I hope that nassau and suffolk do follow. Why would you roll your eyes? It helps both the environment and the deficit.
Ireland charges 35 cents a bag and their plastic bag usage has dropped by 94%. Thats incredible. Plastic bags are TERRIBLE for the environment. I read that a plastic bag is used for an average of 7 minutes. Is is really so hard to bring a reusable tote to the grocery store?

YES! it is that hard..

but i don't mind the tax on the plastic bags if it will help somehow..

If you don't mind me asking, can you explain why it's so hard? I keep canvass bags in my car all the time. I go shopping, unpack my bags and put them back in my car. Easy enough.

I agree - why is it so hard? My 78 year old mother who doesn't drive has been walking to the supermarket with her canvas bags for the last 7 years in Ireland and it's no hardship for her.

Does everyone realize that when you use the canvas bags at the supermarket here (at least at S&S) you get a credit for each bag you use?Chat Icon

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket

maybe hard is the wrong word.. inconvenient may be a better term..

i can see for myself showing up at the supermarket and not having my bag with me.. cuz i didn't put the bag in the car when i left that morning because i didn't plan on going to the supermarket, or i didn't put the bag back in the car after the last shopping trip and don't realize this until i get to the supermarket and open the trunk..

or that i put the bag in one car, and wound up driving a different car to the supermarket, thus i still don't have my bag..

or

i wind up at the supermarket, with the right bag, planned the shopping and STILL forgot to bring the bag inside and don't realize it till i'm done shopping and have brought all of my items to the register and then with a 3 month old and a 8yr old i have to stop and run out to the car to get the bags..

the reusable bags to me will be like an umbrella.. i will never have it when i need it..

but if this is the way things are going.. i'll just have to adjust ya know..it's def not the worst thing that can happen..

I've started using the reusable totes and really like them! However, we do use the plastic bags for our bathroom and kitchen garbages.

Bravo bloomberg Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I was wondering why this was taking so long - he is using it to make money but I am thinking of it from an environmental view point and I think its a great idea. I have not used plastic bags in over a year and now its just a habit when I go to the store.

I think it is a great idea! In the short-term, it will generate some much needed city revenue and it will have a great environmental impact in the long-term.

This happens to me all the time. I live in the city. On my way home I pass by the bodega and pick up a few things.

And still I would rather pay 5 cents each time I get a bag rather than being taxed more or having important social services cut.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket

I think it's a great idea.

I have a bunch of canvas tote bags that I purchased when I was visiting my uncle in New Hampshire.. they've had this in effect for years now. He leaves his canvas bags in the car, and you can always buy another one when you're shopping.

I recently read "The World Without Us" by Alan Weissman (I think) and it is disturbing to think that every plastic bag ever created still exists, and will continue to exist long after we're gone.

ITA, I think it's a great way to accomplish two goals.

One lady on the news who was interviewed commented how it's not fair to be charged that but only to throw the bags out. UH< lady, start bringing resuable bags. Chat Icon

Too many people take excess of plastic bags only to throw them out so I am ALL for this.

That's one way to get rid of plastic and make revenue. I got a whole collection of those .99 cent fabric bags so it wouldn't bother me.

I'm thinking of switching. I know the plastic ones are no good.

Do the fabric bags hold alot? I'm going to have to get several of them I think.

They hold 2 or 3 times the amount of plastic.

Agreed. I love them. Trader Joe has some really nice ones. I also like the ones from Waldbaum's. The ones from Stop and Shop don't hold as much as the Waldbaum's ones.

Good to know!

Does it matter if I get them from one store and use them in another?

They are just easier to handle. The fact that they stand up, have long handles, have more capacity and are more stiff make them easier to deal with. I can sling one over my shoulder and carry one in each hand, that's AT LEAST the same as 6 plastic bags that would have taken me 2 trips and things falling everywhere.
