I'm ok with it. It's just like going to Costco/Bj's - except you get boxes there.
I actually bring my reusable bags to Costco, too. The boxes are nice for the big stuff, but since they usually have the front cut out any small items just end up coming out. So I'll use a reusable bag for the small stuff.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
I love the reusable bags
if you live in NYC- the odds of you having to carry your stuff up stairs or not having a driveway are pretty high
I can throw 2 bags over each shoulder and unload my car before anyone freaks out about me being double parked
if I have to carry in 20 plastic bags that they put 2 things in each- it takes for ever

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
Not that I mind paying tax or bringing my own bag ,but I am just wondering what are they going to come up with next. When they need more money I feel like Pretty soon we are going to have to pay for every inch of the bag, for standing in line at the store. Have only one train running in the city , one fire station and one ambulance. Oh and they 'll take trash out only once a month

I think it's a great idea! Gives me a reason to buy a cute reusable bag!
"a" bag? I would have to buy a dozen bags.
Not a fan of paper, especially after the handles ripped on the TJ's bag and my sauce broke and got all over everything. I'll pay .05 for a bag if I need to.
ETA, the grocery bags get used for my small garbage cans and dirty diapers

I think its a GREAT idea, and I hope that nassau and suffolk do follow. Why would you roll your eyes? It helps both the environment and the deficit. Ireland charges 35 cents a bag and their plastic bag usage has dropped by 94%. Thats incredible. Plastic bags are TERRIBLE for the environment. I read that a plastic bag is used for an average of 7 minutes. Is is really so hard to bring a reusable tote to the grocery store?
ITA agree. I lived in Ireland for 2 years and I am so used to bringing my own bags now. I say charge 25cents a bag.

Summer, they hold so much more then a regular grocery bag. I typically use 4-5 bags for my weekly grocery shopping for 4. Plus, they are easier to get in the house. I can carry 4 in at once. S&S give you 5 cents a bag off for every bag, every time too.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
i love this idea i have been using my reusable totes for quite a while now and all my friends look at me like i'm crazy now they will be forced to use one
funny story sometimes when i go in for a few items i use my bag as my shopping cart and then i know i won't buy more than i can carry so i go to the register empty my bag and the cashier rings them up and proceeds to quickly put them in a plastic bag i just looked at him like he was crazy and said i don't want a plastic bag and pointed to my bag

YES! it is that hard..
but i don't mind the tax on the plastic bags if it will help somehow..
If you don't mind me asking, can you explain why it's so hard? I keep canvass bags in my car all the time. I go shopping, unpack my bags and put them back in my car. Easy enough.
I think it is a great idea, but it is important keep in mind that a lot of people in NYC where they are thinking of doing it don't drive to the supermarket. For me, I use the reusable when I leave from my home to go to the store, but sometimes I just stop in and dont have it with me because I am walking.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
While I understand the concept, why not just not allowing stores to use plastic bags altogether?
I mean if it's bad for the environment, just ban plastig bags and only allow totes.
Plain and simple. Unless of course, you will allow the bags so you can find a source of revenue and use the environment as an excuse.

While banning the bags would be great for the environment, it would put a lot of people out of work.... and sadly, I imagine the plastics companies have a pretty strong lobby. In my mind, it is sort of similar to not banning cigarettes which they know kill people because the tobacco industry brings in so much revenue and employs so many ppl (and has scarily powerful lobbyists).

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
Ok.. #1 I think its a good idea but i have a question
How do I make it work for me?
I can barely get four plastic bags, a diaper bag, my purse and the car seat out of the truck through the backyard, to my door then up the flight of stairs, drop off the car seat, diaper bag and purse then rush to the kitchen with the groceries..
Now what do I do, take those bags BACK downstairs with the carseat and put them back in the car the drag the carseat back up? Even if i didnt take AJ with me on the return trip down and about to the truck, are you suggesting we have to do this everytime we come home so they're in there next time, or if we don't we will end up buying more bags at the store and having MORE bags at home?
I like the IKEA idea of buying as you need. You want a bag, you pay for it. *shrug*
But Im open to reuseable if someone can tell me honest how to use it without causing more havoc (besides which I'll still need plastic bags for Jim's lunch (he doesnt like reusable, i do) and the cat's hair balls.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
We just keep the bags in the house, and take them when we go food shopping. I usually write out the list, and put the list on top of the bags with the circular so I remember to take them.
If I can't remember the list, or the circular, or the bags, then I'm in bad shape.
Xelindrya, if you're using 4 bags normally, you can probably go down to 2 reusable bags, that go over your shoulder, which sounds like it would be a lot easier to carry with all of your items. Instead of making a seperate trip, or trying to remember to take them out when you go, how about putting them near the car keys, or the car seat so that the 'next time' you go out you just throw them in the back of the car?

that's why I say I'd have to learn and honestly it will take time and be hard on me for awhile if i was forced to. I HATE wasting money on more bags if I had them at home and I'm sure I'd forget them.
I make a list (other saving tip) and yes, sometimes I leave it home. Heck sometimes I've left my purse home!!! Nowadays I just triple check I got the baby!!! Though I've forgotten the diaper bag a few times
Like PP said.. Its almost like an umbrella, something you know you need but always forget!

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
It definetly takes 'training'. After a few trips you remember and it becomes habit.
The first couple of times we forgot them, then we got the plastic bags and realized how hard the plastic was to deal with. Now DH won't go without them. Once we forgot and realized 4 blocks away from the house - so he turned around and went home.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
I like the idea! In fact, when I was giving Leslie a shower gift, I gave her my reusable Trader Joe's bag because i could not find the right size gift bag. Then I got myself another one. Now I am loving the idea of giving reusable shopping bags instead of gift bags. I re-use gift bags anyway. The Trader Joe's bag costs less, was more durable and is colorful. I recommend their bag as a good reusable. I want more of them. DH forgets to bring bags into stores if I am not there. I have to remind him more often.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket
One of the supermarkets I shop at doesn't give bags, you pay for them 9p...thats like 20 cents! Other supermarkets have them for free, but you have to ask specifically for them, which is kind of embarassing.

Honestly I find the paper bag complerely useless. Unless you have very little groceries and not a kid with you.
