Does it matter if I get them from one store and use them in another?

It doesnt matter, you can bring in any bag.

It's just convenient to pickup the bag at the store you shop at, and usually cheaper then going someplace else. I was looking online at non-store branded ones and they were 5 or 6 dollars a piece while the Stop and Shop ones are a buck. I'll stick with the stop and shop ones.

I use the Stop and Shop ones, and I love how much stuff they hold. I will admit though that I still use a plastic bag for my meat as I'm always afraid of leakage and bacteria from raw meat.

I'm thinking of switching. I know the plastic ones are no good.

Do the fabric bags hold alot? I'm going to have to get several of them I think.

They hold 2 or 3 times the amount of plastic.

Agreed. I love them. Trader Joe has some really nice ones. I also like the ones from Waldbaum's. The ones from Stop and Shop don't hold as much as the Waldbaum's ones.

Good to know!

Does it matter if I get them from one store and use them in another?

Nope, I just have them from all different places because I am collector, lol.

Trader Joe's also does a raffle for a $25 gc each week if you bring in reusable bags. S&S gives you 5 cents back for each back you use.

I got mine from Whole foods. They are large, have hand and shoulder straps and are very sturdy. I LOVE using them. You can shove so much in, without worrying about ripping.

I think it's a great idea.

We have a bunch of reusable bags we bought from Best Yet. They're huge and hold way more than regular bags.

I think its a GREAT idea, and I hope that nassau and suffolk do follow. Why would you roll your eyes? It helps both the environment and the deficit.

I just don't see how it is practical. I sometimes have 15 bags of groceries...am I supposed to bring 15 reusable totes into the grocery store with me? Chat Icon

This is how we shop too. I reuse the plastic bags for different things at home. I'm more inclined to pay an extra .75 - 1.00 for the plastic.

Believe it or not - it will be EASIER for you to bring and use the reusable bags with you instead of dealing with the plastic. All the food doesnt fall out in the trunk of the car - they have more capacity, and you can carry more at one time instead of plastic, so its less trips from the car to the house.

If you're using 15 plastic bags, you don't need 15 totes. You'd need 5ish. I'd buy 2, and try it out, see how you like it.

ITA! I can fit a whole cart of groceries into 3 tote bags. I pack the bags really well. However, if I buy cereal, I sometimes don't put those in the bags depending on how many boxes I buy just to save room.

Fine with me, and I wouldn't mind if Nassau followed suit. I do get the plastic bags from time to time (great for poopy diapers and the like), but I wouldn't mind paying a nickel each for them.

this is me. I do reuse every bag...poopy diapers, bathroom, kitchen...paying the nickel is fine. I would pay and still use them though.

It would be at least HALF of what you would normally use in plastic. The larger canvas bags really hold double to triple what a plastic bag holds.

I think it is a great idea. I use canvas bags at the supermarket and it is actually easier because you can fit more in each bag. Plastic bags are also absolutely horrible for the environment.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket

This proposal is one of the reasons that I really admire Bloomberg. He genuinely cares about the environment and our well being here on Earth. (On the other hand, there are many reasons i dislike him, but that's a whole other post...)

Reusable bags are awesome. They hold so much and you can wear them on your shoulder, which I love. DH and I brought about 6 bags to go grocery shopping the other day, and used only THREE for our entire cart (granted, it wasn't overflowing, but it was a nice amount...) They are also box shaped, so they pack very well and you can get one for 99 cents. I also started using them to cart stuff back and forth to work. They rule.

Re: Bloomberg to charge tax on plastic bags at supermarket

i think it's a great idea, but i'd prob pay it and still get the bags.

i use those bags for so much that i would have to go out and buy plastic bags to fill those purposes, and that's not good for me or the environment. I never just throw the bags out when i get them.

I'm ok with it. It's just like going to Costco/Bj's - except you get boxes there.
