Re: Children left in car..curious of your thoughts

Again I will ask. What did you hope to accomplish by telling her that it made you nervous or whatever?
Did you think she would be suddenly enlightened and realize the error or her ways because a stranger said it wasn't a good idea to leave the kids in the car?

Personally I probably wouldn't leave the kids in the car in a situation like that myself, BUT she did. So she thought it was ok. I am sure she wasn't stupid and just didn't realize the risks and needed someone to educate her.

That's my point.

Was the window cracked open?
I know of two people who died from carbon monoxide poisoning in a car.

As someone who was an infant in a high jacked car and my mother had to plead to the guys to let her unbuckle me, I personally would never leave an infant or toddler in a public parking lot. Just plain scary you could see the doors were unlocked, even if someone didn't want to car jack it,, all the human trafficking risk too for babies and toddler :(

Nope windows were up and car running with doors unlocked nowhere near the front door. And the mom was in no rush at all. But evidently I was wrong (literally first time I ever said anything in my life lol).

how long does a car have to be running outside for someone to die of carbon monoxide poisoning ? I can't imgaine leaving a car running outside for even 10-20 minutes would cause this but maybe I am wrong.

Children left in car..curious of your thoughts

I’m curious why both the OP and the mother in question were in a 7-11 for 10 minutes.

If that were the case, hundreds of thousands of people would die from this every year. People sit in idling cars all the time. What about bumper to bumper traffic?

I would go out of the way to pick up my 13 year old mother’s helper to stay with my newborn kids in the car for a quick errand like this.....

I feel that it is a lot riskier taking them in and out of the car and through a parking lot

Outside it can run indefinitely and you'd never die. It's when you are in an enclosed space that the Carbon monoxide builds up because it can't escape. Like a garage with the door closed.
Outside it's venting.
Millions of cars are on the roads right now putting out carbon monoxide and we aren't dying from it.
It vents off into the atmosphere.

Or if the tailpipe gets covered up. It happens often in snow storms. People lose heat, go in the their cars for warmth, don't dig out the tailpipe, and then the carbon monoxide has nowhere to escape.

First, how do you know the doors were unlocked?

Second, getting hijacked or being kidnapped for human trafficking is so, unbelievably rare and again I'm sure this 7-11 wasn't in the middle of the ghetto. I didn't know there were that many people living in constant fear of human trafficking.

Third, 10 minutes is a LONG time to spend in a 7-11. That sounds like an exaggeration. But even if it's not, unless she was sitting reading a People magazine I'm sure she was not intentionally wasting time in there, out of sight from her kids. If you weren't doing that why would you assume another mother would?

Yes if it's been snowing you should always check your tail pipe before getting it.

Children left in car..curious of your thoughts

You guys make my anxiety look tame. Carbon monoxide poisoning? In a parking lot? There is no snow on the ground. It’s july.

Look, I wouldn’t leave my kid in a car. She’s a toddler. But I can’t say that I would never leave her in a parked, air conditioned, locked car at 13. She’ll be in high school. High schoolers in the city take the subway to school at 13.

To each their own, but calling the mom out was inappropriate. Not everyone agrees on how to parent. Just because you wouldn’t do it doesn’t make it wrong or dangerous.

Seriously, how close were you to the car to know that?

Also 10 minutes is not a big deal she had capable babysitting in the car, she didn’t need to rush like a maniac. You really should take this as a learning opportunity and not judge so much. Even with everyone’s comments you still seem to imply this mom was horrible.

Seriously..

To be honest my inner ghetto would have came out, the mom was nice. And again you don’t know how crazy people are and how they would react.

You cannot die of carbon monoxide poisoning if you are in a running car that is OUTDOORS. The only way to get carbon monoxide poisoning is from being in a running car in an enclosed space such as a garage.

This thread is crazy town. How do you even know if her doors were locked? There is NO way that anyone would be able to tell if my SUV was locked or unlocked just by looking in the window.

She left kids in the car with a 13 year old, who is old enough to watch them, with the car running so they weren't in a hot car. I'm really not sure what the big deal is here. My mom left me in the car with my younger siblings in the car all the time back in the day. I really don't see the big deal. Furthermore, unless there was some type of imminent danger (such as an infant left all alone in a hot car) why would ANYONE feel compelled to call this mom out and say something? I think in this case it would have been best to MYOB.

What is sad about all of these comments is that as a mom I was just curious of others opinions on what happened. The car was old so u could see the locked button up or down to answer your question. Through reading all these comments I've come to realize that despite asking for opinions, despite stating I was not rude at all to the mom and despite stating I realized I was wrong, I'm the one now getting judged as a mom. So with that said, I regret coming on and asking for other moms opinions which is what I thought this site was for

But you see, going up to her and even confronting her no matter how nice you said it was rude. You also kept pointing out how you could never do that and how she was taking her sweet time, as if defending confronting her.

Us moms in general have to stop judging and we are ALL guilty of it. I have been mindful of this over the past couple of years. To each their own unless they are putting their kids in danger. My son came from a foster home and its no joke when CPS comes to your home.

I also don't think you are a monster, so really don't let this thread get to you. I've gotten ripped apart on here, its not that big of deal in the grand scheme of things. I just think people are passionate about being judged as a mom so you are going to get strong criticism and opinions on this.

Yesterday a woman left her two toddlers in convertible car seats with the car running and went into 7-11. I was jealous I didn't have enough guts to do that while carrying a 5 month old with 2 toddlers in tow. Lol.

Also, while it's extremely rare. Carbon monoxide can build up in a running car with no snow on the ground. It would have to be a malfunctioning ac in the car. But still possible. Just saying, not that I worry about that at all.

I understand it is hard to be judged on here as well. I've learned that if I do not want all possible answers to a question not to ask it. Not everyone is going to agree with me every single time. In this case I would just move past it.

7-11 is really popular on the Island. I hardly ever go into 7-11, only if I am taking a long drive and need to stop for a Red Bull. Chat Icon

No judgment at all. I know you were only doing what you thought was right however, I think there are times when it's best to let others parent as they see fit. KWIM? Chat Icon

LOL OMG I HATE 7-11. The smell in there just makes me feel sick for some reason. They all have that same smell too.
Maybe it's the shittty coffee?

youre not being judged as a mom, dont try to play the pity card now. You are being judged for being a nosy body who couldnt mind her own business when she should have.

That woman broke the law. Children under age 8 are not allowed to be left in a car unsupervised. Anyone age 12 or above can supervise...
