Early Intervention....
I practically left the PED office in tears today. I was having concerns with Christopher. He has been now wobbling his head from side to side a little, like ear to shoulder. My PED also was concerned about him NOT babbling...he has been just cooing still, no dada...baba, etc.
Also she was concerned that he is NOT making any attempt to crawl and gave me the # of an EI place, and said to call if I was really concerned, and ithat it may take awhile to get an appointment, but if it would make me feel better to have the appointment, and hopefully things will get better.
Anyone go through something like this?? Im so upset. He also doesnt focus on you too long like Matthew does. Im so upset now

Re: Early Intervention....
Try to calm down. I haven't been through this, but can only imagine how worried you must be.
What do YOU think? Could he just be "lazy"? Not all babies crawl. And, some babies don't start speaking until well over a year.
An appointment can't hurt and it will definately answer any and all of the questions that you may have.
Good luck and try to stay positive. i know it's easier said than done...but try not to worry until there is something to worry about.

Re: Early Intervention....
It sounds like you are very concerned. I'd say it's probably nothing but why not check it out to alleviate your worries. You could make yourself crazy thinking about all of this and it may just be Christopher developing at his own pace.
I'm sure things will work out soon.

Re: Early Intervention....
I know my MIL was really great, she came with me because DH went on a fishing trip. She told me that Jason never crawled and never started talking till he was 3 years old.
But at 9 months he has 6 teeth
It is so hard to stop crying, the thing that really scares me is the focusing issue more than anything
This whole autism scares me, considering I used to work with them for 4 years

Re: Early Intervention....
Our pedi also had a lot of concerns with my DS's speech (or really lack there of) at his 18 month and then again at his 2 year visit. The pedi basically said the same thing to us, and we decided it was the best thing to do (go through an EI evaluation).
It wasn't very hard at all, and in the process we learned a lot. He did not qualify for speech and talks well today, but I felt so much better knowing that and now always wondering.

Re: Early Intervention....
I'm happy that your Ped. referred you because a lot of them don't. They just say all babies are different, yadda yadda yadda.
DS went through EI and it was great. The earlier you get him evaluated the better and if they find no delays then great!
And if they do find delays, it's better to treat the issue early on.
Good luck

Re: Early Intervention....
i just went through the ei eval process. It is very simple. My ds didnt qualify but now we are in the system and we might call back in a few months to try again. We are getting more pt through insurance bc the evaluator said she thought it would help. I called my ped and they wrote a script out for me.
to you---i know it is difficuly bc you only want the best for your dc.
where do you live ---i really liked the evaluator i used...and you pick who you want. fm me if you like

I'm sure it's nothing, but you know what...if it does turn out to be something then it's not the worst thing! I don't want to be Debbie Downer, that is not my intention at all. BUT, if it does turn out to be something, getting it checked early is the best thing, like Summer said.
Good luck and keep us posted!

Re: Early Intervention....
Definitely call for your own piece of mind. It could be nothing but if it is at least you will find out early
Our Ped wasn't too concerned when we questioned whether Nate was behind on speech. She gave the EI info to have him evaluated. He was checked out at 16 months and he didn't qualify. They had us come back 4 months later and they discovered he had a slight delay. The therapist said that starting him on speech therapy now would help instead of waiting. Nate's been working with the speech therapist for 8 weeks now and we can definitely see a difference in how much he's saying.

Re: Early Intervention....
I would definetely call. If there is a problem and you qualify, the early you get started the better it will be for him in the long run.

Re: Early Intervention....
Get an appointment to alleviate your fears but also remember that every child is different.
I don't have children of my own yet but I just wanted to add that my little sister was really 'slow'. She didn't start talking until after a year and half and didn't really crawl but she was fine. I remember my mom used to be so worried cos doctors had told her she likely would never talk. My baby sis is starting medical school next year. I am sure he is fine.

The earlier you get Christopher evaluated the better it is if he needs treatment. EI can do wonders if needed

Always follow your intuition. I think it is best that you have him evaluated and I am sure he will be fine...but it will give you peace of mind...
Many hugs to you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Early Intervention....
My nephew went through EI but did not qualify for speech. He was borderline so my sister opted to go through her insurance company for a speech therapist.
I did get Joseph evaluated through the school district but he did not qualify either. It gave me great peace of mind to make that call. I felt like either I was going to find out if there was a problem & start on the solution or I was going to find out he was fine (which he was).
Good luck Diane!

Re: Early Intervention....
Jacob has been receiving speech services through EI since late April and he was very lucky to qualify and I am so glad I made to call to do so... I have found since he has started his speech has gotten better.. My speech therapist is amazing and I am lucky to have her...
I know that it is upsetting, there is no harm in getting an evaluation done because if he does get services it is better to get everything that you can earlier than later.. Plus your tax dollars are paying for it so you should definately take advantage of it. There is nothing to lose... rmember you can only get EI through the age of 3 and then you age out of it and have to go through your school district...
The entire process of getting evaluated and actually starting services was about 6 weeks. So I would call as soon as you can..
Please FM with any questions..

Re: Early Intervention....
my two little boy cousins(they are brothers) both were a little slower with milestones, neither of them babbled either.
They both qualified. One now is 7, the other is 5...you would never know that they were slower to do things in the beginning.
Both do great in school. Both are talkers and sports players.

Re: Early Intervention....
Diane, just wanted to give you some and tell you that I have seen early intervention situations so many times. My sister was in ST Charles early intervention at 18 months old and they told my mother all kinds of things. My sister walks and talks fine. My friend has a 7 yr old that when I first met him (knowing what happened with my sister) I knew there was a problem. He went to NIS and is perfectly fine. Walks, talks everything is A-OK. Plus like your MIL told you, your dh had delays so everything is probably perfectly fine. It makes you no less of a parent to get your son the help he needs. You should be commended for taking the time out to express questions and concerns. Some people dont and they and up with Huge problems. Take a breather and go with your gut.

Re: Early Intervention....
I am sure that everything is fine, but it is best to get him evaulated early. My BIL is 11 and he had services from when he was 3 until he was 9 when he was fully matriculated and he is an amazing student with great social skills, so even if he DID have an issue, there is plenty of time for it to be dealt with

Re: Early Intervention....
I know how nervewracking and scary it is. Jacob is 18 months and still not talking. I had him evaluated thru EI and they said he has a slight delay but not enuf for services.. Good or bad? I'm not sure. They want to re-eval him at 20 months if he still isnt showing any signs of improvement, which I dont think there will be, and hopefully he will qualify. The earlier the better. Dont freak out. Just know that you are doing the best thing for your baby boy. The earlier a delay is caught, the faster it can be corrected. Good luck and many to you!
FM me if you have any other questions..

Don't be upset....Ava didn't crawl till almost 14 months or walk until about 15 months....OOOHHH How I long for those days, she hasn't stopped moving since.
Call for the EI, they will put your mind at ease.
