Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
I take the Friday of their birthday week and it's their 'special day' w/ me .......
I usually take my older son into the city b/c he loves it - we go to a muesum, the park lunch etc and then meet up w/ my husband later on. I'll do it again this year for his 5th ......fi'm thinking top of the rock & the lego store for a start ...... For my little guy, last year we were in Disney World - this year he'll be 3 and I'll attempt to bring him to do the city thing too .......

For her first birthday, I took off because we were having her party at our house the next day and I had a lot to do. She spend part of the day at my MIL's house though, so that we could get stuff done.
Her 2nd birthday is on a Saturday, and her 3rd birthday will be on a Sunday. By the time we get to her 4th bday, she will be in full-time preK, and I will probably send her to school to celebrate with her friends.
So no, I guess other than her 1st birthday, I won't be taking off.
This, pretty much. DS's first birthday was on a Friday so I took off to prepare for his party the next day. 2nd will be on a Saturday and 3rd on a Sunday. 4th birthday is just too far away to know!

Though it sounds sweet, I'd never hire someone who took a day off for their kid's birthday. So, no, I do not.
There's a difference between 'calling in sick' and scheduling a vacation day ..... As a manager, why would I care the personal reason an employee requested a specific day off? I'd MUCH prefer they requested and had the day approved in advance, then to just call in

Agree with Marisa.
Employees are given vacation time, how they choose to spend those days is up to them. I personally rarely go away anywhere so I use my days for things that are important to me.. like DS' s bday, Halloween, day after christmas, random fridays during the summer, etc. Always requested way in advance and never as a last minute sick day.

Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
Usually, no i do not.
For both my boys 1st & 2nd, i didn't. They were so little that they had no idea it was their birthday anyway.
with my oldest, his birthday was on a sunday last year and a saturday the year before. I 'think' i may have taken off for his 3rd birthday, but that's it.
This year his birthday is a monday and i will be taking off since we're taking 2 friends of his with us to splish splash.

FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
I took off one day that week to do something special. As long as I have the time I will continue to do it, its a special day for just me and DS or DD.

Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
I've been contemplating this same thing! Usually I work 3-4 half days (8-2) and 1 full 12 hour day per week. Of course DS's birthday this year falls on my 12 hour day. My DH is definitely going to take off; but, my job isn't flexible and I only get 20 hours vacation per year so I probably won't but I wish I could!

FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
yes I do. For both my kids. I will stop doing it once they go into school bc then I feel there is really no point in taking the whole day. My bosses know its 2 days out of the whole year I always request off - never EVER had an issue.

I take a half of a day. That way I can get home early and we can do something special like go to the park and have ice cream for dinner :)
This! For his first, we had off (Memorial Day). For his 2nd, I left early.

I am glad I work for boss who treats me as a professional adult and allows me to use MY vacation days as I see fit . I wouldn't want to work for someone who didn't value the importance of family.

Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
DH has always taken the day off for DD's birthdays. He was going to take off for DS bday too but both kids were so sick there wasn't any point, we couldn't do anything fun anyway with them, so he went to work.
It's nice having him home to spend the day as a family, makes their birthdays a little extra special.

It's really NONE of your business what any employee does on their day off.

Really? Why is that?
I took off when DS turned 1, and took a half day when he turned 2. I only took a half day bc I'm saving my time for maternity.
I consider myself a professional and value my career - and my boss respects me. When I told him my day off plans, he smiled and said "enjoy!" Not that I had to tell him anyway- that is what a personal day is for. I guess I'm just lucky to have a boss that knows I'm capable of managing both my workload and my allotted time off.

That's absolutely ridiculous. How judgmental. I also don't believe that most people have to say what they are using their personal/vacation days for.
I have taken my ds bday off some years, not last year or this year though (is a saturday this year)
FYI I work in a very intense office (and hire) and no one has ever given me a hard time for taking his bday off
Eta:I also take Halloween every year, my days I can schedule them whenever I want
