Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
No. I have to save all my days for school breaks and days off from school that I don't have off for. He celebrates at school and we do cake and presents after dinner. He usually has a birthday party the weekend before or after, so he gets plenty of attention for his birthday without me missing work.

Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
I have no in the past as he was too young to care. I did always send in something tio daycare.
This year DS is turning 3... 15 days from now!!
I took off to go up to daycare early and have cupcakes with the kids. I have gotten to know the other parents and kids so I like to spend a little time there when I can. I will take him out early and meet DH out for dinner (nothing fancy, just something DS will like, like chinese or apple bees)

why would it matter what they took the day off for?
I thought personal days were...personal
Exactly this. I don't see why it's a problem if employees are within their alotted number of personal days and provide ample notice. Hate it when companies view employees as drones with no life outside of work.

FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
Usually I do not. I don't have many personal days plus we usually celebrate on a different day. This year, I might.

Yes.. DH and I both take off for DD's birthday. Past two years it has been on weekdays and we've both been off.
And to the poster who will not hire someone because they take off for their's child's birthday.. get a grip!

I am glad I work for boss who treats me as a professional adult and allows me to use MY vacation days as I see fit . I wouldn't want to work for someone who didn't value the importance of family.

Looks like lots of FTWMs are taking off while their DH work (some exceptions of course, but dont count shift workers because of the super flexible schedule).
Wondering WHY DH aren't taking off? Vacation days? Personal days? Sick days? Do they not love their DC? Or don't understand the importance of family? I doubt it...
Like it or not, it's not viewed as professional...

I don't think it has to do with professionalism. Why don't most dads bake cupcakes? Why don't most dads chaperone the school dance? I think that has a lot more to do with gender/ culture etc.
I think pto is pto and it falls under sick, vacation, personal, etc. Imo what's unprofessional is judging professionalism by what someone does with their vacation days. What if I took a day to just get a mani/pedi and eat ice cream on my couch? Is it unprofessional if I told you I was just lounging around as a vacation day? Or do I have to take an actual trip to be professional?

You keep saying it's unprofessional. It's not your jobs business why you take off so I don't understand this logic.
You sound like a miserable person to work for if you don't value family time.

How is it "not professional" to take a vacation day and do whatever you want? Isn't that exactly what vacation days are for? I would love to know what you view as a "professional" reason to take a vacation day? I work in a very professional enviroment (law office) and would never question the professionalism of someone who takes a vacation day to go to the beach, sit on their couch all day, go shopping, spend they day with their child, or do ABSOLUTELY anything else. So, I really don't get where you come off saying "it's not viewed as professional" to take a vacation day for any reason.

FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
Yes and No.. its late August. She's about ready to go to school so we go to the doctor. So we take the day off and do medical stuff if its a weekday. If her bday is on a weekend we do that on the last Friday before her bday.
fun huh?

Does this come up in an interview?
So what do you find is your strong point? Do you have any designations or licenses? What can you bring to the table...?
Ok everything looks great.. Oh, one more question? Are you the type that takes time off for your kid's birthday?
Not even sure that you CAN ask about their family life in an interview. I'm pretty sure you can't as it would be bias, would it not? How unprofessional would it be for an HR person to be presumptuous enough to qualify me based on my family status, single, married, with kids, gay, divorced?
Frankly, I'd never work for a narrow minded highly unethical company as one who would ask such a question. I would by default question their own standards of quality of life.
We work because we are good at what we do. They hire us for the same. But quality of life is what makes us stay.
Oh and on a side note... My hubby and I split the days, evenly. And yes, we even both take off days to spend with her at the same time! SHOCKER! Ironically his office gives him a FREE day off for his very OWN birthday every year.
Its called vacation .. be it a staycation with your kid by yourself over a bowl of ice cream or a vacation with your kid by yourself over a bowl of Ice cream in Disney.. what difference does it make?
How utterly backwards to think a woman can't have a vacation day if it ends up being for their child?

Best answer to a ridiculous statement seriously!!!! I agree completely. I will use my time when I see fit and quite frankly what does it matter what I use my time for. I earned it, I accrued it. It's my time and my business. If I want to use that time for family then so be it. And more times than not, that's exactly what I use it for.
That's the stupidest thing I ever heard, sorry.

But taking a vacation day to do anything else under the sun other than spending time with your child is considered professional??
You make ZERO sense. Vacation/personal days can be used for anything you want. DH has take vacation days to just hang out with me and the kids and we didn't do anything in particular other than relax. I guess my DH is super unprofessional. He should've saved those vacation days for something REALLY important and "professional".
I don't see why you think it's any of your business what someone does with their free time. An employee doesn't have to tell their employer a damn thing about what they are doing with their day(s) off whether it be a vacation day, personal day, or on the weekend.

I actually think a lot of people said their dh do as well
What is the difference between taking a week family vaca to Disney (child orientated) or taking a vacation day to spend with your child on their bday? Vacations are viewed professionally now?
Ps-I'm a single mom and take off

I understand what you are saying. However, I don't understand why anyone would divulge this information before getting hired. FYI, I have to take off xx/xx every year. lol
Plus even if its a personal day, I think they would eventually know why you are taking off every year. What if you have more than one child?

Re: FTWM-Do you take off of work for your LO birthday?
I haven't needed to..1st birthday was a saturday second was a sunday but I see why someone would and I certainly might.
eta: as far as the "professional" comment I hardly think someone managing their own personal days should be viewed as unprofessional. I have one child, one on the way that means if I took for both their birthdays it would be two whooping days...I can use MY days how I see fit.

Sorry everyone is giving you grief about your statement. I think it depends on your position and the type of company you work for. At my previous jobs in banking and private equity, it would not go over well if anyone took off for a kid's birthdays. I clearly remember many higher ups being irritated at the women who took off in early September to send their kids off to school. I did not have kids back then and I do admit I thought it was unprofessional as well.
This is the very reason why I do not work full time. I would not want to feel guilty or feel like my peers were judging me. I go in late or leave early as I please now. I don't think I could go back to working full time.

Yep agree. When I was a consultant and Client Service Manager, this wouldn't go over well either. I see it similar to taking of on your birthday, its not necessary every year.
I teach now and this wouldn't be an option. But I only work part time, so if my class fall on a bday, I have to go.
