Honest question for literal bible interpreters

How do you reconcile the two conflicting stories of creation of Adam and Eve? And the two stories of Noah's Ark, etc?

ETA: This is aimed at people who believe the Bible was written by God and not altered by human hands.

If you believe humans wrote and changed the bible, the questions is irrelevant.

Probably the same way people can support a candidate who flip-flops on issues.

And I'm not calling out your candidate, I don't know much about him.

Re: Honest question for literal bible interpreters

No I honestly want to know what the teaching is on this.

I think Catholics pretty much ignore it.

Re: Honest question for literal bible interpreters

i'm going to say this once

we don't reconcile it - at least i don't

it's called faith - it's not based on logic

we believe because we choose to believe it

it's what gets us through the day

and quite frankly, i don't appreciate having to justify the complexities of my faith

i don't ask you why you believe what you do.

you're entitled - so am i

i'm really getting tired of this religious third degree today

Do you have a bible? Read Genesis 1 and 2 and you will see what I am talking about.

This is why I think the Bible can't be literal, not because I think God is wrong, but because I think God CAN't be wrong.

GOD didn't write the Bible. Humans did - many, many, many years after these things happened. Stories were passed by word of mouth and while the details got fuzzy, the underlying message really didn't.

I don't interpret the Bible literally, but for many, many, many years Biblical scholars have pretty much agreed that the apparent errors and inconsistencies in the Bible are due to the fact that for such a long time, the Bible stories were spread by word of mouth. They were then written down by many different people. (There is no one Bible author). Then, the Bible was translated into many different languages, many times over.

Is it really so difficult to see how details can get lost in translation?

That's not my point. I was trying to tie it to your interests to make it clearer. If a person believes so strongly in a candidate that they interpret opposing statements by that candidate as being acceptable, why can't my interpretation of 2 stories from the Bible being similar enough in my mind be treated the same way?

I don't mind being asked. Don't read my post then, Don. You knew it would piss you off so you didn't have to click.

Believe it or not I am HONESTLY interested in what people have to say on the matter.

But Catholics, which I know you are, are not literal interpreters of the bible. Some sects take the bible as word for word the literal word of God.

I personally don't think it NEEDS to reconciled. I'm perfectly happy with the bible having 2 stories for a number of reasons, but to someone who takes every word literally, I would think it would pose a problem. If not, then I really do want to hear why not.

I am geniunely curious about other people's beliefs for the most part, which is how I learned so much about Judaism. I didn't know many Jewish people before HS so I asked a lot of questions and took classes to understnad.

This thread is the same as me asking a Jewish person "Why don't you/Jews believe Jesus is the Messiah?" which is also a REALLY interesting conversation.

see, I was never taught that God wrote anything.

I see the bible as a book of parables written by MAN to explain the existence of God.

certain men (and women) were chosen to be God's voice on earth. maybe some of them heard and interpreted him differently.

many books of the bible have parts that don't always gel. b/c they were written by different people. based on their experiences.

it's common sense to me.

The question was aimed at people who believe that the bible was written by god and does not reflect the errors and values of people transcribing it. This is a completely different context.

I agree.

As I stated above, though, there is also a reasonable (and I thought widely known) explanation for the inconsistencies even if you do want to interpret the Bible as literally as possible.

Re: Honest question for literal bible interpreters

So what is your religion? You've stated on other threads that got deleted that you are religious -- so I think that it's a fair question to ask you how you identify yourself.

I'm particularly interested since you have taken such an interest in telling Catholics what they believe. Are you Catholic?

Yep.

I'm not telling Catholics what they personally believe, but what the doctrine of the church is on certain issues (such as evolution).

We don't read the bible literally, we believe we need the interpretation of the church teachings to guide us. That's the religion's view, I didn't make it up.

Honestly, I don't think the question was aimed that way. I think you just like to keep narrowing and narrowing the focus of your questions in your own attempt to make people who believe differently than you look stupid. Maybe it's not your intent -- but you keep asking people to justify things b/c you just can't possibly understand them. When someone tries to explain it to you (here or elsewhere), you just keep saying "no, not what I meant. I meant it in this very limited circumstance which rarely or never exists."

You don't appear to genuinely want to understand anything. You honestly appear to want to call out people who you think have unreasonable beliefs.

I'm SURE you'll post saying that's not your intention. That doesn't change how it comes off.
