that the janitor could have been there for the pushing phase of my delivery for all I cared.
I guess I'm trying to say do what your comfortable with but allow for the fact that what you want pre baby may not be what you want post baby.
I figure this could happen. I am a slow healer and I have a number of medical problems that will add to the complexity of my healing/delivery and will add to my discomfort/crankiness, etc. So that's partly where my stance is from. Plus I have been in the hospital before for other things so I sort of know how I feel while there mentally.
But you make a good point about your second delivery and the janitor being there. LOL I guess only time will tell but I love reading the stories just to know some "what ifs" and how people felt in the situation and just to feel a bit more mentally prepared and that I have options (even though it's so early, I can't help but think of this). I am certainly keeping my mind open that I may be surprised at how I feel by the second day, but I know for sure I am not budging on having visitors as soon as I am done delivering. I def want time to myself and DH for sure, at least a couple of hrs.

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
My DS was born on a Sunday morning at 2:41 AM and I had visitors that same day come. The entire immediate family came. I was out of it cuz I had a c-section and was throwing up and I kept closing my eyes and wanting to rest. But at the same I didn't care that everyone was there.

Honestly, don't stress over it now. I know its hard and I too constantly play the what if game. But, what I have learned is you need to tell people what you need. Most of the time they get it. Also, new mommies get cut a lot of slack, so please try not to worry to much.

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
Did the hospital really have strict visiting hours or did you just say that?
Can I ask your reasons for sending the baby to the nursery when people came? Was that so people's hands weren't all over the baby and passing him around? Can you do this at any hospital, opt to send your baby to the nursery when people are coming? I can see myself wanting to do that. I don't imagine myself wanting hands all over the baby, and the baby being passed around. So I would rather avoid the situation.
And I agree, I don't really want the visitors at the house either overall. Like you said, really no time limit then. So short and sweet at the hospital, day 2 or later for me works best.
I just stretched the truth about them being super strict prior to me even having the baby. I made sure I said it a few different times so it sank in. This way people went there with the intentions of leaving and not sitting around. The visiting hours were posted all over though.
I also did not get the hospital phone hooked up. I told everyone to call my cell so this way I could turn it off if I didn’t want to talk.
I am pretty sure you can send the baby back to nursery at all hospitals. I did it b/c I did not want anyone holding him. I didn’t want to be put in the situation where it would ok for grandma to hold him but not my sister or SIL. This way I avoided conflict. I told my mom to come in the morning during grandparent’s hours so she could hold him. It wasn’t my fault the MIL couldn’t make it in the AM. Rules are rules.
It was nice to see friends and family for the sort periods of time. It broke up the monotony of the 3 day stay. Again, for me it worked out b/c I knew I would never get rid of them at home. You need to do what you are comfortable with. It will all work out.

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I hated having visitors. I was so happy that Stony Brook had long visiting hours BEFORE I had the baby... but once I was there I wished there was only like 1 hour for visitors. It was impossible to have privacy for breastfeeding... and yes there was blood everywhere that first day. (I had a c-section).

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I loved having visitors for my first baby, but by the time I got to the fourth baby, I didn't want any visitors. By then, being in the hospital was more like vacation time for me and I didn't want to be bothered by anyone!! I knew it was the only time I was going to have to relax and be alone for a very long time.
What aggravated me the most was people "just stopping by" unexpectedly when I got home.

I didnt like having so many visitors. It took time away from me learning how to BF. I know my dad and my DH's best friend meant well coming to see me but it was hard to whip out the boob in front of them

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I didn't mind having visitors - it was nice(I had a c-section) However, I will say that I think that the visiting hours were too long. 11 - 8 was fine for immediate family members - but i think it should be a shorter time period (like evening only)for other people that want to visit. Especially the day after giving birth.

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I had vag deliveries both times and didn't have many visitors (just a few family members or a close friend)...but I was only there like 2 days so most people came to my house afterwards...
I wouldn't have minded the visitors, but I felt fine... If I didn't feel fine I probably wouldn't have wanted them...

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I didn't know how I was going to feel so I lied by omission waaaaay in advance. I told everyone about the evening visiting hours and conveniently left out the daytime visiting hours.
I developed pre-eclampsia and had to have a c-section, so I found out on Monday, I was to have surgery on Tuesday. That night (Monday) I told everyone about the c-section. I told my LIW/LIF buddies to come on Thursday (which they did) and it turned out great.
Everyone else came on Wednesday (my mom, bro, & sis, MIL & SILs, co-workers and other friends) and even though I had developed some complications and couldn't sit up in bed and talk to people, it was fine. I was laying in bed, and everyone had to walk around to one side to say hello. As a result nobody stayed more than 10 minutes. The hospital policy was to have the baby in the nursery for evening visiting hours (remember, I didn't tell anyone about the daytime visiting hours) and people wanted to see the baby, so they saw me for few minutes, then ran to see the baby (and didn't come back), or they oogled the baby for so long that they couldn't stay longer than 10-15 minutes with me b/c hospital security came and kicked people out so the baby could come back to mommy for her evening feeding.

Like the OP said, I think if you said you need to rest or such, people would get the hint.
I guess in my case, I have people who would have to travel over 1.5 hrs and they can't just "pop" by. So that is partly where my concern comes from. Also, I forgot to ask, did you have visitors the first day after the surgery? Thanks so much!
Yes, my DD was delivered at 9:26pm & I had visitors at 12 noon (parents & then bro/sil & aunts).. .the visiting hours were until 8pm & by then I was beat.

Personally, I loved having visitors. It was a long stay and I enjoyed the company. No one over-stayed their welcome - and if I ever needed some privacy (e.g. to nurse or go to the bathroom), they left w/o hesitation - sometimes just waiting outside the door or getting something to eat and then returning. I think MOST people know that hospital visits are meant to be short and sweet.
Good luck!

ITA. I had a C Section (unplanned). DS was born around 4PM and I had visitors as soon as the nursery opened at 7PM. I layed in bed. They spent most of the time at the nursery window and left around 8. Then, finally, I was allowed to have bonding time with DH and DS. I actually looked fwd. to having visitors. The only ones there during the day were my mom and my sister. Everyone else came during the "Nursery hours".

Re: How did you feel about having visitors while in the hospital after having a c-section/or vag delivery?
I had a vag-delivery. DS was born at 1:03am. Grandparent hours were 2-4 the next day and I actually got up and took a walk down the hallway with DH because I did not want to be around them at all. . . . . .that could also be because I really don't like my in laws, but that's a whole different issue. I was fine with my family being there. I would have been very unhappy if they had all day visiting hours at St. Charles though. DH and I just needed some time with our new baby. We were so exhausted at that point too. By evening visiting hours, DS was in the nursery and I was fine with visitors, but it was only one hour. Again, if it was all day, I would have been overwhelmed.
As far as getting the hint, unless they are completely clueless like my FIL who didn't want to leave when I needed to bf DS and practically needed to be dragged out, then ran back in the room "to hear DS latch on," people generally get the hint.

I know. . . invasive, clueless, PATHOLOGICAL. I tend to think this is not the norm though. What a weirdo. I still get annoyed when I think about it, but this is typical for him.

my son was born at 4:30am so after i slept for a few hours i got up took a shower, ate a litle, and had some time wtih DH, DD and DS for a little while before we had other visitors. I ddint mind, it helped pass the time. When i got tired i just layed down, and when i had to latch on DS i asked them to leave the room for a minute. Everyone is different.... ETA: VAg birth
