Naming a child after a grandparent
I didn't name Jack after my father.
One of the priests who came to talk yesterday at my grandfathers wake said how important it is for some people to have their first names passed on and it got me thinking. I think I would def. name my next son Frankie. Don't know how DH feels about it but he'll have to deal
Did you/Would you name a child after a parent?

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
I named Thomas after my father and my grandfathers. Thomas is my father AND my grandfather (father's father). Michael is my other grandfather (mother's father) who passed away in 2001.
But, I also loved both the names. I probably wouldn't have done it if I didn't at least like them a lot!

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
We did (sort of.) MIL passed away a few weeks before I met DH. She was instrumental in us meeting, even though she had passed away. It was important to both of us to use her name (Miriam) as DD's middle name. So, she is named after her grandparent.
ETA: DH's dad has also passed away and we plan to use his name (Charles) as a middle name if we ever have a

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
thank you all. I never really considered Frank(ie) because my entire family is named that. My first grandfather who passed away was also Frank and I wanted to incorporate him somehow - but Jack Frank wouldn't have gone. I wanted to use his last name but DH didn't.
I feel like my father has gone above and beyond for Jack and now if I have a second boy I really would like to honor him.

DD's middle name is partially after my grandfather who passed away a couple years ago...his name was Jack when I found out I was having a girl we decided the middle name would be Jacklynn (lynn is my middle name)

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
Elizabeth was my grandmother's middle name so DD is named for her. I originally wanted to name DD Elizabeth Joan, which was my grandmother's name flipped, but DH really didn't like Joan. Also, the "E" is for my DH and my dad whose names also start with E.
If we ever have a his first name will be after my grandfather (but also is the masculine of DH's sister who passed away) and his middle name will be my dad's first name.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
In the Jewish religion is customary and traditional to name a child after a parent/grandparent or other family member who has passed away. I am named after my Great-Grandfather who passed away shortly after I was born.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
If we had gone by the Italian tradition, my son would be named Radomir!!!! (I'm Italian but DH is Italian and Croatian). I couldn't do that to him. So, we named him after our Grandfather's. Matteo Renato. Matteo was my grandpa and Renato was Dh's grandpa.
Matteo was due on March 15th which was the same day my Grandmother died. If he was a girl, I was going to use her name. Since he was a boy, I used my Grandpa (her husband) He was still alive at the time and he was so honored and it meant a lot to my Dad too.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
My FIL passed 3 days after we came back from our HN (1 month before I got PG).
I asked DH if he wanted/would concider using his dad's name as a middle name. I actually like it. But as DH pointed it out it was not "necessary" (although I think it would have been nice) and it did not really match DS' 1st name so it did not flow very well.
We would not concider it at all for a 1st name.
I still feel we should have used it but love DS' middle name we had chosen for me prior to FIL's passing.

I love the name Frankie! Very cute!
Todd Jr is named after my DH but I also loved how his middle name is Michael and that was my grandfather's name, he passed away a month after Julia was born.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
DDs middle names are after our maternal grandmothers. I guess we could have done first names, but we didn't.
If we ever have a son, he will be a junior and the next girl, well that would be hard since we both have moms, and you only get one middle name - we 99% would never name any of our children after anyone's first name.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
DH's name is the same as his Dad, and he didn't want a 'the 3rd', and my Dad's name is the same as my cousin, his son, my BIL and DH's late grandfather...So we decided if we have a boy next time we will make the MIDDLE name the same as my dad/his grandfather
As for DD, her middle name is my maiden name. And I think if we have another girl, we'll use a middle name of Jill, which would be the initials of Dh's grandmother, my grandmothers, my mom and his mom...

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
My kids were both named for my grandparents - with my son, his first name was my grandfather's and with my daughter, her middle name is my grandmother's.
But shhhhh! I "let" my DH think our son is named in honor of his father, too (since it is the same name as my Gramps).

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
I did...my son is named for my grandfather who passed in 2000 and one of DH grandfathers.
I would have it no other way....my family has a tradition of naming every other generation Paul or Abraham. Since neither my dad nor my aunt had a boy, it was up to one of the 7 girls between them to do it. My 1 cousin had a boy but chose not to honor him, so I did it. It was a choice I made LONG before I even met DH.
DD #1 middle initial (P) is also for Grandpa Paul since she was a girl.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
DH is named after his father, who was named after his father, etc. So when we start having children, my first son will be named after DH and his dad. His middle name will be for my father. My brother is the same, named for my dad, so his son is named for both of them.
If we have 2 boys, the second boy will be named John after my grandfather.

Both of my children have their middle names after grandparents.
same with my kids. and for the 3rd, we used my hubby's grandpa's name, since its a very armenian name (Hrant) since we had lots of very-ITalian already going on. (he's not as gung-ho as me anyway, he could have cared less either way)
as far as my siblings and myself, we are named after all 4 of our grandparents.

Re: Naming a child after a grandparent
The baby in my belly is going to be named after his 2 grandfathers, 2 great grandfathers and an uncle who passed away at 17.
Joseph=Uncle, FIL, my grandfather Charles=My father and my grandfather
Now if he will only pick Pietro Michael Constintino for his confirmation name, he will have all the great and great great grandpa's honored
ETA: if he had been a she her middle name would be after my 2 grandmothers: Marygrace
