It is another optional test, like the ultrascreen. It is done between 15-18 weeks. My Ob didn't mention it until my 13-week appt. I'm going on the 28th for it when I'll be 17 weeks.

I thought the AFP test was just a blood test, not a sonogram like the ultrascreen.

It tests for neural tube defects like spina bifida.

It is and it also has a high false positive rate. The nuchal is the one with the sono that checks the neck for Downs

Re: October Mommies Thread
I will clear up what the Quad AFP test is.
This is from the papers the doctor gave me.
1. Combined Screening Test (first trimester)
*This first trimester screening test estimates the risk of having a child with Downs Syndrome or trisomy 18 through a specific sonogram measurement and a blood test perfomed ideally at 11 weeks gestation.
*The sonogram measures the fetal neck tissues, called the Nuchal Translucency
*At the same visit, a sample of blood is drawn to measure the levels of specific chemical markers of Downs Syndrome and trisomy 18.
2. Integrated Screening Test (first and second trimester)
*This screening option incorporates the combinded test (described above) with the AFP?Quad Screen, which is a blood test performed at 16 to 18 weeks gestation.
*This test offers the highest Downs Syndrome detection rate and also screens for open neural tube defects.
If your results from there are negative, you go on to the level II sonogram.
If your results from there are positive then you have a choice to do either the CVS, where they take a piece of the placenta to determine if you're carrying a baby with an extra chromosome or the Amniocentesis.
The percentage is 3-5% for a false positive result.
Hope I cleared that up.
By the way, this is an OPTIONAL test.

Re: October Mommies Thread
I have an appointment with a new doctor on Monday. I will be 16 weeks and 2 days. I know he is doing a 3d ultrasound, so I am hoping to find out the baby's sex that day!
ETA: I officially felt my first "poke" this morning. I have been feeling little wiggles randomly for almost 2 weeks, but I got a tiny poke today!

I can't wait to start feeling pokes! So far, nothing yet. I'm so impatient for my next appt on the 28th.
That's awesome that you're going to have a 3D sono at the Dr.

I know, I can't wait! I want to switch doctors anyways because the office staff at my old one is horrible and my friend goes to this new doctor and she said he does one for her at every appointment! I hope they can tell me!

Re: October Mommies Thread
Nuchal Translucency Screening
What is the nuchal translucency screening test? This prenatal test (also called the NT or nuchal fold scan) can help your healthcare practitioner assess your baby's risk of having Down syndrome (DS) and some other chromosomal abnormalities as well as major congenital heart problems.
The NT test uses ultrasound to measure the clear (translucent) space in the tissue at the back of your developing baby's neck. Babies with abnormalities tend to accumulate more fluid at the back of their neck during the first trimester, causing this clear space to be larger than average.
The NT scan must be done when you're between 11 and 14 weeks pregnant. (The last day you can have it done is the day you turn 13 weeks and 6 days pregnant.) It's usually offered along with a blood test in what's known as first-trimester combined screening.

Re: October Mommies Thread
Had my 15 week appt today. The Dr talked me into the AFP he said it's different than it was 2.5 years ago when I had my DD. He put me on Reliva Iron and more folic acid (for the thalassemia). Baby's HB was 150ish. We discussed cording blood banking. Evidentally 4 children in my practice have been cured (leukemia) with their own cord blood. The discussion was very interesting. They were on the fence when I asked about it with my DD, now they are all for it. All in all a good appt. 4 weeks to my level II

Great updates! I have my next appt. on 5/2 and I'll have my AFP at that time (the blood test). And then I'll schedule my Level II. Can't wait!
I banked the cord blood with both of my kids.
