Re: Please share your favorite Crock Pot recipe

I love this thread! Not exactly a recipe, but like others said, you can basically throw anything in a crock pot Chat Icon:

DH and I got a huge pack of cans of V-8 from BJ's. I didn't like drinking from the can, because i felt like I was drinking tomato soup, so I figured that I'd turn it into a stew. I poured about 10 cans into the crock pot, added chopped celery, carrots, onion, zucchini and lentils and cooked on low for about 3-4 hours. It was delicious and was a great way for us to get plenty of vegetables!

The only think I can think of is if you used low sodium broth, there wasn't enough salt in the dish... and I never cook peas, even frozen ones, more than a few minutes, or they get mushy. Did it taste bad, have no taste, was the chicken dry... ?

I actually never put the peas in when it was cooking. And I think I used the regular broth (organic)... i'll have to check when I get home b/c I have an extra can. It needed more salt but that wasn't the main issue... as it was cooking it had a weird smell. I can't even explain it. We couldn't figure out why it was tasting like that, I was thinking the mrs.dash but DH thinks the carrots were bad, but they weren't!

Was it the mushrooms? I don't know - I don't like mushrooms much so I don't cook with them Chat Icon

Maybe it was the smell of the crockpot?? Sometimes when you first use an appliance it has that funky metal smell. KWIM? Maybe you need to break it in a little.

It could have been that! I washed it good first but when I first turned it on it had a funky smell like burning metal but I figured it was b/c it was new... and that smell went away quick so I don't know.

I'm going to try turkey chili this weekend so we'll see what happens!

I think I'm in love with this thread!Chat Icon
I just made this one the other night:

Chicken and Apples

2 apples peeled, cored and sliced into rings
1 onion sliced thinly
1 lb. boneless skinless chix cutlets sliced thin
1 can chicken broth
2 cans condensed cream of celery soup
2 TBSP rosemary or thyme
salt and pepper to taste

Layer the apples, on the bottom of the crockpot, then on top of that layer the onion, then ontop of that the chicken. Mix the condensed soup with the chicken broth, pour over layered ingredients, then add the rosemary ontop. Cook 4-6 hours.
I added a little apple cider vinegar and it gave a nice little kick.

I am making this tonight, I can't WAIT to see how it comes out!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ugh, I just tried to order more online and it wouldn't let me?? This is what I hate about these things sometimes b/c they come out with limited supplies and then don't sell it anymore Chat Icon I contacted a seller, maybe she could get them still. I can order you some if you wanted to try it. It was seriously the easiest thing I've ever made in the crockpot

Re: Please share your favorite Crock Pot recipe

I made just turkey breasts the other night for dinner.

4 turkey breast cutlets
can of chicken broth
lemon/pepper seasoning
baby carrots
celery
onions
(I probably could've put potatoes in but didn't think of it until after the fact)
I think I did put like 1/4 cup of water to just to be safe.

cooked on low for 5/6 hours.

made just a white gravy when I got home & served with baked sweet potatoe w/ cinnamon.

easy/delicious & joey loved it all!

Another loin of pork recipe -
Salt and pepper the pork then cover it with apple juice and cook on low. When you are ready to eat drain almost all of the juice and add any bbq sauce you like. As you mix in the sauce pull the pork apart with two forks. It is delicious!!

MMM this is so good. I slice two onions and cook them under the meat in the applejuice.. Its so good. even my dh has the onions on his sandwich now.

Slow Cooker Lasagna!! SOOOOOOOOOOO YUMMMMMMMY!!!!

1-1/2 pound lean ground beef
1 onion, chopped
2 teaspoons minced garlic
1 (29 ounce) can tomato sauce ( I like barilla or Clasico)
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon dried oregano
1 (12 ounce) package lasagna noodles ( I love Barilla ridged lasagna noodles)
16 ounces Ricotta Chees ( I like Sorento)
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
16 ounces shredded mozzarella cheese (I like to use whole or part)

1.In a large skillet over medium heat cook the ground beef, onion, and garlic until brown.

2.In a large bowl mix together the Ricotta Cheese, Oregano grated Parmesan cheese, and 1/2 of the cooked ground beef.

3. Mix the remaining ground beef to sauce.

4.Spoon a layer of the meat sauce mixture onto the bottom of the slow cooker. Add a double layer of the uncooked lasagna noodles. Break to fit noodles into slow cooker. Top noodles with a portion of the cheese mixture. Repeat the layering of sauce, noodles, and cheese until all the ingredients are used. May sure the very top of your last layer is a layer of mozzarella cheese.

5.Cover, and cook on LOW setting for 4 to 6 hours.

**what I included in this recipe is after layer is done around the edges pour 1 cup of water. This will help it sticking and drying out. I also had purchased extra sauce for leftovers.

This was soo good my mom was surprised it came out of a crock pot!

I just made this. It came out amazing!!!

Re: Please share your favorite Crock Pot recipe

Lasagna (made this over the weekend)

1 lb. ground beef
1 jar (26 oz.) spaghetti sauce
1 cup water
1 container (15 oz.) Ricotta Cheese
1 pkg. (7 oz.) 2% Milk Shredded Mozzarella Cheese, divided
1/4 cup Grated Parmesan Cheese, divided
1 egg
2 Tbsp. chopped fresh parsley
6 lasagna noodles, uncooked

(The only thing I did different to give it a little more flavor than the recipe was use a tomato basil sauce, I used italian seasoning and like 2 tsp of minced garlic when I was browning the meat.)

BROWN meat in large skillet; drain. Stir in spaghetti sauce and water. Mix ricotta, 1-1/2 cups mozzarella, 2 Tbsp. Parmesan, egg and parsley.

SPOON 1 cup meat sauce into slow cooker; top with layers of half each of the noodles, broken to fit; and cheese mixture. Cover with 2 cups meat sauce. Top with remaining noodles, broken to fit; cheese mixture and meat sauce. Cover with lid.

COOK on LOW 4 to 6 hours or until liquid is absorbed. Sprinkle with remaining cheeses; let stand, covered, 10 min. or until melted.

mine did this for a while, probably like the first 10 or so times we used it. It never smelled but everything had this weird taste to it and it definitely wasnt any of the ingredients....it wasnt a "food" taste that we were tasting, it was just weird. I used to say that everything just tasted like crockpot! Its starting to go away now. I was talking to my boss about it and she suggested getting the crock pot liners and trying that so the food doesnt actually touch the crock pot.

Re: Please share your favorite Crock Pot recipe

I'm going to attempt to use this thing again after my epic fail a few weeks ago. I have chicken thighs (with the skin and on the bone) in the freezer and want to use that. A few questions...

Do you have a good crockpot recipe using chicken on the bone? (most i see say bonesless/skinless)

Can I put the frozen chicken in the crockpot or do I have to defrost first?

I don't have a good recipe but I have put frozen breasts in the crock pot twice now and it came out awesome both times. The first time I cooked it on low for 8 hours and although the chicken was a tad dry, the sauce totally cancelled that out. The second time I put it on low for 6 hours and it was great (it was on "warm" for 4+ hours though because I was at work).

I don't know if I put this one on here yet, but I LOVE LOVE LOVE it and made it tonight, so I wanted to post it:

Shredded Barbeque Chicken

2lbs of boneless, skinless chicken breasts
1 bottle of your favorite barbeque sauce
1/2 cup of italian dressing
1/4 brown sugar
2tbsps. worstchesire (sp?) sauce

Mix all the ingredients in the bottom of the crock pot, then add the chicken. Cook on low for 6-8 hours, after 6 hours, take whole pieces of chicken out, shred with two forks and put back in crock pot for the remaining time.
Serve on rolls.

Bumping because I have to ask:

What good is a 4 or 6 hour slow cooker recipe???

The whole point for me is to be able to put it on right before I leave for work at 8 and come home to a meal being done.

If it's 4-6 hours I would have to come home at lunch to do it. Chat Icon

Do you just do those ones on weekends?

My crockpot has a setting for "keep warm" so when it is done cooking it automatically turns to keep warm and stays like that til I get home to eat.
