Re: Sitting in backseat
mine are/were preemies and were released from the nicu at 4.5lbs and 3.13 lbs. I sat back there with them for a few months. Now I have to sit back there on long trips to entertain them.

We only did it on the way home from teh hospital or if the little one is crabby and it's somewhat of a long trip wherever we're going.
Exactly this.

I did hear the nurse telling someone in the NICU to drive home in the backseat with their baby because there was a minor disurbance on her car seat test. .
Off topic, but they did a carseat check? I basically just got dumped at the curb, lol. DD is 6 months and if DH and I are driving together, I sometimes sit in the back with her, usually on the way home from dr appts. I don't think there is a right or wrong answer.
At our hospital, they do a car seat test for all babies born before 37 weeks. It was the first test one of my kids failed so he had to stay until he passed it.
To the OP: I only sat in the back seat on the way home from the hospital.

Pretty much the same here. DD is 9.5 months old, and I hardly ever sit in the back with her. I didn't want her to get used to having someone there, because there are many times that she's only in the car with one of us. She looks at the lights on her mirror, and usually falls asleep anyhow.

Never. It builds up an attachment... And would make it hard for me to drive the kids solo. IMO, they need to learn that as the car is moving, everything is on hold!
Agreed.
I sat in the back with DD1 on the way home from the hospital and once in a blue moon when we were on long road trips I would sit in the back for a little while just to keep her company.
Once DD2 came along I don't fit in the back with both carseats.
This exactly.

Re: Sitting in backseat
I NEVER did it. I didn't see any reason for me to be back there and it was a habit I did not want to start with my DD. She did just fine on her own in the backseat and I happily stayed in the front with DH.

Same here.
Same here... A friend did it too long and was stuck doing it until her DD was about 9!!! She would scream until he puked if Mommy didn't sit in the back seat with her..

The nicu does. Twin 1 was in for breathing immaturity. They need to be on monitors in the carseat to make sure they don't desat (blood ox) in their breathing since they sit forward in the carseat and their airway is so small. Twin 2 wasnt in the nicu so they didnt do it. They were 36 weeks.
Era. They didnt even check twin 1s carseat and told me they don't do that.

Sitting in backseat
She is 4, nearly 5 and we fight to see who sits in the back. She is fine solo and she is solo often. We have occasionally chosen not to sit back there and she's fine. We CHOOSE to sit with her because its fun. We get to talk, play, sing, make fun of the driver, play with flash cards etc.
Sometimes she will tell us she wants us both to sit up front. Other times it its me and my hubby trying to win the who gets to sit with AJ. To be fair a lot of our trips are fast enough the winner just doesn't want to drive!

Re: Sitting in backseat
my brother and sister were making fun of me for sitting in the back with DD for as long as I did. I did it probably until she was about 10-11 months. But IMO there is no right or wrong answer. It's your kid, do you what makes you comfortable/happy.

Sitting in backseat
The carseat test done for preemies or those who have had NICU time is not a "carseat check" per se.
They monitor the breathing of the baby to make sure there are no episodes of apnea and stuff when they're strapped into the carseat, they don't go out and see if your seat is installed properly like at a seat check.
