I tihnk you guys forget what its like in small towns. Free clinics in NY are abudant...the same can not be said for everywhere though.
This is so true. We take a lot for granted when it's so readily available here.

New argument- How is my, possible, on the off set chance being pregnant qualify as sick?
If you go into a hospital... and are totally honest. You go into the ER and request a MAP from one of the nurses and tell them you have no insurance. They will probably ask you a few questions... give you the MAP and send you on your way.
This is how I see it. But of course since I don't work for a hospital... who knows.

have you ever NOT had insurance?? Do you know how much a Dr's visit's cost is? People in Agony put off going to the Dr for as long as possible b/c they cant afford it- some thing like this is much more time sensitive, and long lasting. I think its idealistic to think that its just that easy.
This is why I mentioned the hospital earlier.
Aren't hospitals required to treat any patient that doesn't have insurance as long as its considered that the person is "sick". Wouldn't requesting a MAP fall under this category?
Isn't part of the taxes I pay take care of this hospital service?
yes, they are obligated to TREAT the person... that doesnt mean that they can't Charge the patient... just that they cant Deny them treatment. They will still be billed, AND, it will, almost always, be MUCH more $$$ that a Dr's visit would be.

they still have to 'check you out'.... because you are a liability to them if they give you something without having hecked you out first. and it Will be much more expensive then a regular dr's office visit.

Im sure with a baby, you've seen how high hospitals bills are. now, imagine that withOUT insurance. the Cheapest ER visit alone will cost you AT LEAST $250 for the Doctor and prob around $500 for the 'hospital'.
$750 doesnt sound like a sound alternative to me

Then how come... for all these supposed WalMarts in "small towns"... for some reason if its a small town... usually the shopping areas are in the boonies like everything else... and are NOT in walking distance. In a small town... you usually have to drive to get to Walmart... no?
Just food for thought. If I live in a small town or in the middle of nowhere... if I am in walking distance to the WalMart... there are probably many other shops in the area as well.

In a lot of places, Walmart is the ONLY place.
My sister did a volunteer trip in NM and they drove to get there. She said there are so many places where there is only a Walmart, she was absolutely floored.
She was also amazed by all the poverty she saw in our own country but that's another story.

Last time I checked... most hospitals had built in pharmacies.
Kinda convienient for them to be together... don't you think?
Hell... theoretically... you can go to the hospital... NOT check in... go right to the pharmacy... and ask for your MAP.

Yeah... so if you can drive 20 miles to Walmart. If you are in DIRE NEED of a MAP... you can drive 50 miles to the next CVS, Walgreens, Supermarket, etc.
Yeah we take for granted living in NY with having everything on "the corner". But living in a small town you are in that much MORE of a need to have a car to get around. (yeah i know there are a select few that dont have this luxury)
