Homemade Mum Mums - anyone?
I tried the recipe using rice flour on wholesomebabyfood.com ... it was a no go, they were gross and hard, like dog biscuits.
Anyone have easier recipes, that worked for them?
I was just looking at this recipe this morning! Thanks for the post now I won't bother making them!

I make a chicken soup, with all kind of veggies and some italian seasoning, in a crock pot. You can puree it, or you can cook it with less water and offer as table food. Very tender very easy to mash with gums.

Does anyone use ice cube trays or BBB food trays then pop the frozen food into zip lock bags? If so, does it save room in your freezer?
This is what I do and then I label everything and throw it in the freezer. I feel like I can fit that in a tight spot rather than a tray
i do the same! i also write the date i made it so i know how long it's been in there!

I have a silly question- How do I go about traveling with homemade baby food on a plane and staying with friends for a few days?

I don't, its too messy and I'm too worried about it spoiling. I relied on plum organic baby food. Its the closest thing to homeade I found.

Ok thanks. I'm thinking I can just run to the supermarket when I get to my friends house anyway.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Hi everyone! I am new to this thread... DS is almost 5 months and he is eating cereal at the moment. We are a few days away from starting veggies so I figured I would start looking at this thread now. I am planning on making all of my own baby food as well.
I received the Beaba for my shower. I am debating whether or not to return it. I have heard so many mixed opinions on it but mostly from people who have never used it. Is there anyone who has it who can give me there input on whether or not it is worth it to keep or to return it and just use a steamer and blender. I have both of those items as well as a bullet. TIA

The bullet is awesome! I never even saw the Beaba in person. But it looked even more awesome, it would have saved me some time.
The only problem with it for me, I only would have use for it for a few months. DS is already more interested in table food at 10m. If $ isn't an issue, I'd keep it and use it!

honestly, i use my $10 food chopper from CVS that is over 5years old. the beaba is a waste of lots of money since you will only be using it for a few short months.
there is also no need to buy any fancy trays, ice cube trays are the cheaper route and work just as great!
but yay for making your own food!

I got the Beaba early december and i actually like it. For a lazy person like myself, it does everything in one shot. Steam and blend, so i only have to clean one thing. I dont have to worry about water boiling (or forgetting it). I dont have to worry about how much water to add to thin out when pureeing. For my DD, who is 6 months, it makes a lot of food and I have tons frozen. I dont mind doing multiple batches since its so easy. So far, I have gotten a lot of use out of it and I like that I don't have to "watch" it. I am a WAHM so i run ragged all day. I can steam a veggie, give DD a bath and put her bed and come down and finish pureeing.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
My dd just turned 7 months and we will be introducing her to meats. I have a few questions. 1) What did everyone try besides chicken at that age. My doc also mention not to use salt. How does everyone prepare it? Only thing I can think of to give flavor would be chicken broth. 2) On the paper that my doc gave it mentioned that I give 1/2 a jar of fruit, veggie and meats. How much is 1/2 if am making my own food? Sorry for all the questions but new to this.. Last one (sorry ) I will be starting to freeze the food. Once the food is frozen in the ice cube, I put them in freezer bags individual by type of foods? Or by when I made the food? Thanks

we just started meats as well at 7 months. pureeing meat, imo, is so gross! i roasted a whole chicken and then used the bones and some meat to make a soup with some veggies. i pureed that. no salt, no seasoning. its really tasty and sweet plain. my doc never gave us any paperwork, so i just judge by eye how much my DD can eat. i also have containers to freeze the food in, and they are 2 oz each.
and yes, once you freeze the food, i pop them out the next day into freezer ziploc bags, labeled with the date i made them. it should be by date so you know when it was made.

Turkey & Beef. You can do ground turkey or beef in stock. DD is a HUGE fan of Meatballs. I made a beef stew and shredded the cubes into tiny pieces (I never pureed soup or stew). I did the same with chicken soup.
One ice cube spot in a tray is 1oz of food. Usually a jar is 4oz, so half would be 2oz. I would start pouring things into the ice cube tray and back into a bowl so you can get an idea of what it looks like roughly.

Just use dark meat chicken and boil it with a little bit of water, that makes cooked chicken and broth. If you need a fine puree you just puree the chicken with the broth... I think maybe that's what was meant?
I never use store bought broth unless I'm really in rush to cook something, for DS never, its usually terrible full of salt and all kind of preservatives .
eta: low fat is not really a good idea when it comes to babies, use full fat, because they need the fat for brain development. Usually also low fat on the label, means more salt and more sugar, to help replace the flavor the fat would have given.

Its fine for starting solids, you can make broth the same way it just wont be very tasty, since taste comes from fat and bones. But if your just starting solids, its fine!
When you are off formula, baby will need a lot more Iron, and dark meat will have more. If you are BF, chances are you need more Iron by 6m.
For all of us, I buy boneless skinless chicken thighs, they are cheaper and tastier than breast meat.
If I'm making something for DS separately I like skin on bone in chicken, because I cook it for a long long time, and I feel he gets even more nutrients from the bones and the fat from the skin is good for him.

When did you ladies start adding spices such as garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg etc to your DC's food?

I'm a nut, I introduced them like I do every other new food, but I promise as soon as he hits 12m he eats exactly what we eat.
I use a lot of herbs in cooking.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I gave DS some dehydrated apple to gum on, he's 11m, and loved it. Looks like it hit all the right spots, and it sort of melted by the time he was done.
Anyone dehydrate fruit and veggies at home, is there an easy way to do it?
