Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
What fruits did you mix with yogurt? Today I gave Xavier yogurt with peaches and bananas. He went to TOWN! It was actually pretty good too ;) Did you also mix yogurt with veggies and what combos did you do?
I bought the Stonyfield Farms whole milk yogurt. They also make Yo Baby. It was recommended from wholesomebabyfood.com. It does have sugar but it is natural sugars...
So far I have made/given Xavier the following:
Fruits Apples peaches pears bananas avocado
Veggies sweet potato carrots green beans peas
Meats chicken-My mom made him a chicken type soup with rice.
Dairy yogurt
Cereal oatmeal rice-but now eating real rice pureed
I have bought mango and red grapes which hope to start after waiting for the 4 days on the yogurt. Then followed by turkey, zucchini, broccoli and lentils.

My girls only liked the sweet stuff They hated acocado and peas.
Only veggies they liked were sweet potatoes and squash.
Still have to try spinach and green beans.

What about carrots?
DS isn't a big fan of avocado especially once I introduced sweeter fruits and other veggies. So I mix it with the sweeter fruits and he eats it all up. Have you tried doing this?

so far, he's had
rice and beans with avocado potato, carrot, and zucchini "stew" tortellini with mashed carrots linguine with broccoli rabe rigatoni with peas black beans and avocado

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I want to introduce my 8 month old DS to pastina this weekend but I have no idea what to do with it. Any suggestions? How do I even make this?
I think DS is getting bored with his veggies/fruits. I'm so tired all the time that i haven't had it in me to make any creative combos. Work is draining me lately
Moms, give me some inspiration please. Pastina, fruits, veggies, chicken, anything. Thanks!

DD is 9 months on the 23rd and doing great on solids! She's loved the homemade purees and over the past month we've transitioned to mostly solids. Here are some things we've done- fortunately DD likes pretty much everything. Tofu- (cut up into small cubes- firm organic from TJ) mixed with veggie puree like broccoli, sweet potato Pastina & Orzo mixed with shredded cheese and veggie (like peas and carrots) Chicken (cooked with Olive Oil on stove) and then shredded lightly in blender mixed with pieces of baked potatoe and some cheese and/or butter Turkey meat mixed with yogurt (see below) and sweet potato Lots of fruit- mangos, bananas, blueberries, avocado, papaya, pear- ripe and just cut up into pieces Cheese cubes (cheddar) Greek full fat yogurt (I use this to mix in with things. This particular one tastes to me like sour cream so i mix it with potatoes or of course with some fruit purees) Egg Yolk (hard boiled, just broken up into pieces) Cheerios

Do it!! DD loves Pastina and Orzo is good too. I mix it with any veggie purees I have (frozen or in the fridge) and also with some shredded cheese. I actually put it on her tray and she loves to feed herself! The stars are everywhere- but she eats it and has a great time! Good also is that they cook so fast! I think my fav veggies to put with are broccoli, spinach and sweet potatoes....

DS is turning 7 months next week and has no teeth although I can see those puppies through the gums :(... Anywho, I digress.. lol I'm feeding him two cubes of chicken and rice (soup made by my mom) and two cubes of veggies. I've been giving him this everyday.
I'm going to add turkey in the next few days. I want to introduce more veggies though before I do so. I'm starting to mix veggies w/ fruit but I want more options for DS especially with the meat...

I am not doing meats right now. I did introduce chicken once as table food. I haven't given him any beef. I will wait till he is more proficient at eating table food, to give it to him. I'm not into pureeing it. For now, he gets his additional protein from eggs, lentils and tofu.

I didn't do meats until DD could chew it. Pureeing them turned my stomach. She still doesn't really eat any meats so I have use protein supplements. I'll make her omelets and sneak some ham or turkey into it. Or homemade chicken pastina soup with some veggies.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
I started DD on meats at 6 months to make sure she got extra iron. She is a huge fan of chicken and lately curried beef with peas and carrots
I had a question about meats as well. For some reason when I blend beef with veggies and broth the meat still stays a bit gritty. I can't figure out how to make it smoother. I haven't had a problem with my hand blender, so I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong?

Oooo Would you mind posting the curried beef recipe? When did you start giving DD this meal? Could I make it with chicken or turkey?
I don't plan on pureeing the meats. Pureeing meats sounds icky to me just saying it lol. The chicken my mom made she boiled and shredded. Xavier hasn't had a problem eating the shredded chicken. I'm going to roast, use the crock pot or boil. I'll shred the meat and freeze it that way with a little of its broth. Once defrosted I mix with veggies.

I pureed some chicken breast for DS this weekend and I didn't think it looked bad at all. I read on wholesome baby food that you should puree/blend the chicken/meat cold to avoid grittiness. I chopped up the chicken in 1 inch cubes, boiled it, let it cool and then placed it in the fridge until later that day so it got cold, then pureed it; no grittiness. He's having it tomorrow so we'll see if he likes it.

Re: *The Official Making Your Own Baby Food Thread :)
Anyone have any ideas on how to make green beans yummier?
DS is a great eater but he does not want to eat his green beans. He will tolerate them if given to him with carrots but barely. I made some this weekend and added a bit of apple to subtly change the taste but he still doesn't really want them. I'm tired of so much squash and sweet potatoes.
Also, has anyone made broccoli? How'd you make it?
Thanks!

I steam the broccoli, chop it up, give it to her w/cheese OR put it in grilled cheese.
I made mashed potatoes last weekend and put carrots, peas and green beans all mixed in...DD just ate it all together.
She loves her meats and carbs like her mommy! Now that I'm on WW, its so hard to feed her certain things and not want to eat it myself! LOL! But now I find we have lots more vegetables and fruits around DD loves her fruits, used to love her veggies, but now we have to sneak them in a bit

I bought the frozen bag of broccoli Natures Promise. I just cooked it normally by boiling it and then pureed it. Today we're trying peas that I made the same way. Broccoli will be in 3 days!

Good idea about using the crockpot! I totally forgot about that!
You can easily substitute chicken or turkey for beef in the recipe below. I used ground meat, but you can really use any type of meat as long as you cook it through. I plan on making another batch with chicken today actually.
Ingredients: Extra virgin olive oil 1/2 lb ground beef (I used 90% lean) 1/4 tsp ground cumin 1/2 tsp ground coriander 1/4 tsp ground turmeric 10 oz bag of frozen, organic peas and carrots
Directions: 1. Set heat to medium and add a turn of olive oil to pan.
2. Add meat and mix in all spices.
3. Once meat is browned or cooked through, add the bag of frozen peas and carrots.
4. Cover pan with lid and continue to cook until peas and carrots become soft. This usually takes about 5 minutes.
I then blended this with some water to make a puree for DD.
Next time I'm going to use chicken and also add some chopped onion and garlic to the oil. The curry flavor is really mild and it's a big hit with DD! Enjoy!
ETA: I started giving mild curries to her at 7 months.

I don't think it should matter Kath. you'll be shredding/cutting it up anyway so it's whatever easier for you to cook.
at this point, I'd do the split chicken breast though, only b/c the meat will be moister since it's off the bone.
I made chicken soup last night and gave him the broth, potatoes, carrots, and zucchini. he ate it up good. I still haven't given him the chicken. but I KNOW he would dog it if I did. I boiled a whole chicken.
